India in smoking death spiral

smoking21.jpgKansas isn’t the only place that needs to pass a public smoking ban. So does India — and before it’s too late. A recent study determined that there are 120 million smokers in India, half of them younger than 30, the Washington Post reported. India is expected to have nearly 1 million deaths a year due to smoking starting in 2010. More than half of those deaths would be among the poor, who likely have been easy prey for tobacco company marketing.

Umm, they also have one of the world’s highest populations (and growing).

    Problem? Really?

Sorry, they mean to have it that way.

Would somebody explain how this statement is true?

I can guarantee Indians aren’t smoking American cigarettes. They are smoking those gawd-awful unfiltered concoctions of death they call cigarettes. Probably has cow dung in it or something worse.

Besides, what concern is it of ours what India or its population does regarding personal choice?

Here we go again, save the world from themselves. The sad thing is the more that die early, means less health care and cost to maintain their bodies. Do gooders in action again here. All you preachers, just butt out.

    Butt out! Good one!

I’m with fleettwood. Why are the poor easier prey for tobacco company marketing?

Does that mean we’ll have to get that Dell tech support elsewhere?

The poor are targeted by a LOT of industry but most effectively by the “vice” industries(i.e. tobacco and booze)

Theya re targeted because they are easier to convince that these products aren’t harmful or at least not as bad as they’ve heard.

The idea is that the poor are simply less educated and don’t have the ready knowledge about what harm they are doing to themselves.

Why target a group with no money?

“Why target a group with no money?”

Because they will find the money if they are addicted.

That’s another reason they fight so hard against tax increases on these kinds of products. They want to keep them affordable and keep the uniformed addicted.

Poor people in very poor countries can afford to start smoking even less than people in developed countries like the United States. The people in poorer countries don’t have enough money for themselves or their kids to begin with. The governments in these poorer countries also don’t have money for anti-smoking advertising or health warnings about the health dangers. And the tobacco companies give out free samples to get people addicted. And by the way, they still do the same in the US.

Victim Mentality. lets all say it together. If people make a bad decision we can just say we are Victimized.

I’m broke and can’t get a job because I drop out of school. thats OK the schhool was the problem anyway. I started smoking because the camel looked so cute it had to be good for me.

lets all say it together. we are victims.

People who cosistantly make bad choices are usually poor…so it makes sense that more poor people smoke.

education has a lot to do with why the poor make poorer choices.

I always find it interesting how they assume a number of deaths from a specific cause like this, when the formula they’ve picked to assume this is flawed. It has been shown how ridiculous the formula they use is.

400 million lives will be lost at some point to…

    old age.

You can bet that most of those who die from lung related illnesses were smokers…over 300,000 per year. Yes, we all have to die sometime, but smokers in Kansas alone take up $930,000,000 per year in healthcare..$200,000,000 to Medicade recipients that is totally funded by the Kansas taxpayers.
Just think what we could do if that money went to preventative health care or some better cause than treating people who willingly made themselves sick by consuming tobacco.
