All the state’s a stage

Minnesota is among the states that included an exemption for theatrical smoking in their statewide smoking bans. Right on cue, bars are offering “theater nights,” when they dodge the law by deciding that their bar is the stage and all the men and women in it the players. The state may try to close the loophole, but until then, “We have our karaoke night and we have our rock night. Now we will have our theater night,” said one nightclub owner.

    Still going….and going….

    TODAY’S NATIONAL DEBT:
    $9,279,689,389,333

    Have a nice day.

Buy lots of cheap, toxic Chinese crap from your local WallyMart.
    That’ll save the economy.

Oh, yeah. I forgot. Rhonda, what about the fact that the State Senate is poised to “sock-it-to-me” AGAIN with another hefty cigarette tax.

Tracy to State: Helloooo, back to reality.
Me, my friends, everybody I know manages to buy their smokes from MISSOURI. It’s already 10 to 15 dollars PER CARTON cheaper, before their proposed tax hike.
Like a greedy mob boss, they have priced their own drugs out of the market.

I guess if I were a patriotic Kansan I would suck up the extra cost and buy local, right?
After all, my impending death by tobacco will build schools and roads, right?

Private business hadn’t ought to have to “skirt the law” when it comes to smoking. If you don’t like the smoke, stay the f*ck out of the place.

    I agree with Plee..

I went out to eat the other night, to a non smoking establishment. I finished my food faster than my husband. I would have liked to have had dessert, but I wanted a cigarette so bad by the time he was finished, it was snowing outside, so we opted to leave instead.

I don’t know why businesses can’t install smoking rooms for their smoking patrons. This would completely end the entire argument, but no, like I’ve said a million times, this has never been about health and safety of others, but everything to do with punishing us filthy smokers. We’re treated worse than gutter heroin addicts and I’m sick of it.

I just wrote a letter to gov Sebelius, telling her she won’t get a dime from me, if they do this, I’ll start getting my cigs elsewhere. I’ll grow my own if I have to. It’s cheaper to be a drug addict or an alcoholic, and those do FAR more damage than my cigarettes.

I read something yesterday that said ‘if you have to walk by someone smoking, hold your breath because just breathing for a moment cigarette smoke could increase your blood pressure and put you at risk for stroke”.

Oh WTFE. My god, I should have had a stroke by the time I was two.

By the hysteria, I should have died by the time I was 5.

Pleef..I totally agree with you. I am a non-smoker, but don’t think we need the government meddling in every aspect of our lives. If the gov’t wants to regulate it, then mandate that businesses must post a sign, warning people whether that particular establishment is smoking or not smoking. Then, people can exercise their own FREE WILL and enter or not.

Seems like FREEDOM OF CHOICE has become a dirty word anymore.

    Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! that cigarette
    Puff! Puff! Puff!
And if you puff yourself to death,
Tell Saint Peter at the golden gate,
That you hate to make him wait,
But you got to have another cigarette.

    [Pouring sounds.]
    Man, that’s coffee.

I was tickled to read in the paper this morning that the enthusiasm for a smoking ban law is waning at both the city and state levels.
Are people finally gaining some adult reasoning ability? Gee, I hope.
I work as a health care professional, a Respiratory Therapist if you can imagine, and I think smoking is just plain STUPID, no ifs, ands or ‘butts’ about it. It is one of the extreme worst habits for one’s health anyone could have short of sleeping on railroad tracks. But people should have free will, and business owners should retain their property rights.
Remember, tobacco is a legal, age controlled product and this is not only a health issue but one of consumer and property owners rights. Those not wanting to expose themselves to smoke have that right in their decision not to go where there is smoke. To not have smoking bans in private business does not infringe on non-smokers rights, they can choose to avoid those places and maybe convince those business to go non-smoking. But smoking bans certainly infringe on the rights of business owners to run their business as they see fit and serve the customers they are trying to serve.

A business owner has the obligation by law to provide a safe work environment for hir employees.

What part of that is unclear?

If restaurants provide proper respiratory gear to its staff, then perhaps they would be in compliance.

    Otherwise, ditch the cigarettes.

What about places where all the employees smoke? And places where employees know it is a smoking establishment and want to work there? Is it the government’s job to protect them from themselves?

  15. Boxlock
    Posted February 27, 2008 at 10:22 am | Permalink

Political_mama, frankly I do feel like a heretic with my position on this subject but people have a choice here and they should be able to exercise it on both sides of this issue.
I used to smoke many years ago as a late teen and into my early twenties when I first entered Respiratory Therapy but it soon became apparent it was a foolish habit and I stopped and have never smoked again. But we should not trample property owners rights or the rights of businesses to cater to those they choose if it is legal. If OSHA determines second-hand smoke is a health hazard we need a discussion but they haven’t found a strong connection yet.

Fleet, and the cons dont come out of the woodwork screaming if one suggests that pot should be legal, or gay people should live their lives free government intrusion, or adults can have sex with whoever they want as long as it is consensual. Neither side can make a credible we support freedom argument. And the smoking issue doesn’t fit into the normal left-right argument as Ive seen both libs and cons on both sides of the issue.

Isn’t it nice for the State to take such a high moral position when they ban smoking – for our own good.

At the same time, they establish as many casinos and as much gambling as possible in order to bring in MONEY!

Yeah, gambling, that’s good for all of us. My God, we have so much money we wouldn’t want to buy any products made in the USA. Let’s just throw all our spare change into useless Gambling Casinos.

But the state does have that helpful program for those who become addicted to gambling.

We can’t allow smoking though. That’s very, very bad for us.

There are a number (not sure how many) of state prisons where smoking is prohibited… even on Death Row… as a hazard to the health of the prisoners… yes, I said even on Death Row…

    I do not smoke.
I bitch at those I care about, who do smoke, because I know they will live longer if they quit.

However, I do not mind “2nd hand smoke” and I think that most of the warnings against “2nd hand smoke” are bogus.

What bothers me most, about this issue, is that I know many of the people who want to ban all public smoking NEVER go out anyway!

Smoking areas and non smoking areas, air filtration and ventilation. That is all we need.

Then, let establishments decide if they want to be “smoke free” or not.

Those of you who demand smoke free establishments?

If you had any real numbers out there, the market would provide what you want.

The State of Kansas is sending and has sent tax bills to people who have ordered online. If you’ve bought a lot, expect a nice sized bill in the mail in the future.

I think it is pretty bad when a person is so addicted to a drug that they will leave their husband alone and go out in the cold and snow to use that drug to kill themselves. And pay probably about $100 or more a month to do it!
