State GOP went with what has not worked

puptentConservative Republican candidates got trounced in every statewide race in Kansas in 2006, losing to either moderate Republicans in the primary or Democrats in the general election. So what did the state Republican Party do last weekend? It became more conservative. The party replaced two moderate representatives on the Republican National Committee with two conservatives, one of whom is the president of the ultraconservative Kansas Republican Assembly. Strategy to Sebelius message?

sebeliusOne thoughtful take on Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ Democratic response came from Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus, who saw strategy in the contrast between Sebelius and last year’s bellicose speaker, Virginia Sen. Jim Webb. “This new messenger and overhauled tone is no accident,” Marcus wrote. “It reflects the mounting anxiety among congressional Democrats that the change in congressional leadership has not produced enough of the promised results in the public mind.”

She concluded: “The next several weeks may help make clear which message resonates most with Democratic voters: Webb’s sharp elbows or Sebelius’s open arms; Clinton’s gritty realism or Obama’s build-it-and-they-will-come vision.”
