Sebelius skewered by Jon Stewart

Kansans should steel themselves to watch Jon Stewart’s brutal bit on Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ Democratic response to President Bush’s State of the Union address, part of Tuesday’s “Daily Show” on Comedy Central. “Wow — flat and boring. What state is she governor of again?” he said of Sebelius’ opening lines, adding, “but her lack of humanness meshed perfectly with her message.” He mocked her “join us” refrain and her suggestion that the heartland has a corner on honoring and respecting military service. And to her concluding “God bless and sleep well,” he responded, “We’re way ahead of ya.” The only consolation? Stewart was harder on Bush’s speech.

That wasn’t her most shining hour certainly as far as public speaking goes but I get so tire of the typical eastener attitude that the midwest is just a place to snooze away your life!

I guess if you’re such a famous figure as Jon Stewart you can say whatever you want about the hicks from the sticks because after all, them there farmers out there don’t know nothin’ anyway!

Figure it out Jon, we’ve got brains and we’ve also got remote controls on our TV’s that let us change the channel – really!

Just in case you didn’t know…

HIS SHOW IS ON COMEDY CENTRAL! IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUNNY!

The sad thing, is that so many people turn to him for actual news. It is his job to make fun of people and events regardless of the truth of it.

It isn’t funny to not mischaracterize Kansas or to not make fun of her speech.

Who would watch Jon if he gave a serious political analysis of her speech?

    B-O-R-I-N-G.

That was my point Nathan, although it was evidently lost in my translation. People do look at it as hard news and that’s what made it not cool…

Maybe Sebelius is a tad boring when she’s not screaming. The TV news report of the 8 Wonders of Kansas, screaming. At Obama’s rally, again. She showed some spirit.

She’s not that exciting to hear. It wasn’t a miracle she became Governor. We have had a few Democrats. She wasn’t the first woman either.

A lot of national bloggers on sites I read, found her speech boring. They never saw or heard of her before.

Not a V.P. for Obama. What’s her cause? She’s a politician, not a change agent. Not a personality that’s fiery for social difference. Obama needs a bully pulpit speaker about his policy as V.P. That person should have a prior history of championing some cause, in environment, military or wary of the stock market industry.

Half of America doesn’t have cable, don’t know or care who Jon Stewart is.

  5. Posted January 30, 2008 at 5:40 pm | Permalink

Unfortunately, in this case, Jon is right-on.

Sebelius’s speech was flat and uninspired. Her asking the President to “join us” was ridiculous. Bush hasn’t given anything to Dems in 7 years except the finger.

Her speech at the Obama event however rocked the house.

That’s what good leaders like Obama do–they build others up around them.

People aligned with Bush end up looking petty and stupid, just like him . . .

I havent heard ANYONE outside of Kansas who seriously thought she did a good job. At least it might keep her off the obama ticket. But then again, having her gone might clear the way for a REAL democrat to take back the party.

Pelosi and reid must be ever so proud of their choice to respond. In their usual fashion, they helped bush look better.

    Again.

    CapnAmerica and KFG,

Don’t you think that the DNC both helped write that speech and also approved it prior to her giving it?

She might not have delivered it very well, but I can bet the DNC was behind the content in some way.

He’s done nothing in policy decisions for you to make those statements.

If you have RNC talking points how they attacked and beat Harold Ford, share them. To me, the GOP is weak as a kitten on many levels of argument.

Some Democrats have to cross over and work with agreeable Republicans. Hillary won’t do that.

She has Bill and he is causing her downfall.

Harry Reid’s form of leadership is terrible, he’s the weakest Democrat running the Senate in a long time.

That partisan attitude doesn’t serve him at all. Can’t twist Republicans to his side for any reason. They would rather stand with Bush who has lowest polls as President than work with him.

Hitler was a bad man, a really bad man, he took his country to war in a bad way! He had so many people killed in a bad way! Hitler was a really bad man, I just can not say that enough! Hitler was a horrible bad man! Hitler lied to his people, he was a bad man and he made other countries mad at him! Hitler caused his people to hate Jews and want them to be wiped from the face of the earth! HITLER WAS A REALLY BAD MAN!

NOW, I know you have not hear this enough and want to keep hearing it so you can finally do something about it! Since hearing about it and talking about how bad a man Hitler is make it change. After all by now not everyone already knows Hitler was a bad man. There are still people who think Hitler was a Great man and a strong leader. But just a few and by now it is apparent that telling them that over and over will do no good. By hey, why try to move on now? Why try to start fixing what bad Hitler did now, its a whole lot easier to just keep repeating it over and over that HITLER WAS A BAD MAN!

She was more rigid than usual, but I think women in politics have to be that way or they’re acused of being shrill or feminine.
She did a good job of exposing her background during the speech (relatives who held office in both dem and gop), so she has a legacy of public service in addition to her being governor in the reddest of red states (Bob Dole country).
I noticed a similar phrase in her speech and Obama’s in Eldorado…something about shared sacrifice and prosperity… which leads me to believe she will be tapped for Something Big (they’re already collaborating). She left Topeka on freaking Kansas Day for this event, for crying out loud.
In addition to all that, the magazine layout in Vogue has to be a boon for her overall publicity.

He is obviously NOT the person for the job. I’ve watched Jon long enough to know that he doesn’t make fun of something unless it’s the truth. Those of you who think he doesn’t report real news, obviously don’t watch him. He is often FAR MORE honest than any pundit or anchor out there. That’s what makes him funny.

See, I think we need a cooperative VP, one willing to work across party lines. For that job, Obama, Sebelius would be perfect. But we NEED a hardcore politician to be in the driver’s seat.

Delayed..watching KSU beat KU in Manhattan. Nice end to the Streak with freshman!

    Mom,

The V.P. is a decision maker in Congress if they are tied. That’s not a position for deals to be made.

Sebelius can be hired by Obama’s administration to work with Republicans in the White House. I hope Obama hires Republicans so they argue in there.

Negotiated legislation comes out that Congress can easier work with.

Radical change, bipartisan hiring in the White House, isn’t that what we want?

A too partisan White House hinders legislation sent to Congress and nothing timely gets done.

That’s why I want a policy attitude person as V.P.
Cheney like but with truth’s this time!

Statements made describing need for the policy in a bully pulpit way, but in the White House, Democrats and Republican staffers are negotiating.

Since it hasn’t happened, I’m not exactly clear how that would work. It’s just an idea for a lot of partisanship to lesson.

There will be plenty of battles along partisan lines in Congress but those battles can’t take all their time.

Partisan earmarks inside bills that torpedo it need to decrease.

The answer to J R’s question, who is the biggest Republican panderer is John McCain.

He flips sides, that’s okay but then goes back to agree with Bush policies. You’re right, Bush treated him terribly so its a question, why his behaviour is like that.

To stay in office, he had to agree with Bush policies, but that hinders Congress. Sometimes Harry Reid, just needed one more Republican to pass something.

Feb. 5th will settle things with Obama and Hillary, either one has to begin powering down their Presidential desire.

It could last until the Convention, but one will have more advantage than the other.

Bill is the lightning rod between them. He needs to shut up and sit down. Hillary doesn’t want him to is the problem.

Bill is the trigger for Republicans to gather together. I know many Republicans and none of them like Hillary in any way. Not in any decency disagreeable way, it’s vehement distaste toward Hillary and Bill.

Some Red drank that Kool Aid for a long time when it comes to the Clinton’s. Their still hooked on it if Clinton’s become the nominee.

Those Repubs I know aren’t hating Obama as much.

If Hillary wins, so be it, but to me Bill has no value being in the White House again. He claims he’ll take no administration job. Not even decorating the White House and throwing dinner parties, describing some of the First Lady’s job duties.

He’s sexist not doing that kind of work.

You know, i thought it was bs the republicans were stirring the pot to divide us. But no, perhaps I was wrong. Hillary has worked with Republicans to pass bills far more than Obama has. Bill worked with a full Repbulican congress and got things done.

    Mom,

I said it before, this election between Hillary and Obama, Democrats are splitting from Liberals.

Liberals have that over reaching anger at Conservatives. Moderate Republicans are why Sebelius is the Governor.

I can’t get over Bill wagged his finger at me, said a lie. I was truly disappointed in the guy for his personal decisions. Lying about a policy is different.

Making up evidence to trigger the Iraq war is not as bad. Bill lied about his soul. He would do anything not being truthful to himself.

If we had known the reality of Bill Clinton from Arkansas truthfully, his Whitewater associations real time and accusations by women, that guy shouldn’t have been our President.

He’s lucky George H. was so terrible as President.

Gore ditching him in 2000, we got Bush W. as GOP response to them!

How weak the legacy of Cliton’s didn’t serve our country long term. They escaped and moved to New York with no troubles in the world.

We got Tom Delay and Ralph Reed so powerful, they went nuts. Lobbyists running Congress, blackmailing and money laundering.

Bush creates a choice war in Iraq, the longest and most expensive ever.

Responding to the excesses of Clinton’s, the Republicans put forth the worst of their party.
Karl Rove crawled from under a rock.

I don’t mind moderate Democrats and Republicans, a lot of legislation in Congress, they must work together.

Obama is a new generation Democrat. Hillary and Bill represent 90’s partisan gridlock. Fighting Liberals. If you think Bob Dole as Senate Leader and Bill Clinton worked together, that’s revisionist thinking.

Some Republicans simply wanted a balanced budget. They didn’t appreciate what Bill was doing in other way.

WOW Kansas has a corner on honoring its veterans.

I wonder if the First Dude Gary “Louis XVI” Sebellius wrote the line for Governor Kathleen “Marie Antoinette” Sebellius.

I heard a story that that Nola Foulston’s office filed false criminal charges against a disabled air force vet from Iowa with a broken neck, extradited him to Wichita, released him 2 days later but kept the warrant open for 7 more years and 1 year later improperly incarcerated his 14 year old son with out his knowledge for 2 years for a minor charge to avoid having to contact the Iowa veteran. The vet originally worked as a mechanic at McConnell in the 1980’s. I wonder if he worked on the planes flown by our “patriot-politicians” Sen Morris or Rep. Goico. It’s amazing how these urban myths get started.

I heard that a rumor was going around since the early 1990’s about a Harvey County psychologist making his patients work outside with out clothes. Wait that wasn’t a rumor! The doctor was finally busted by the feds who came across the sex abuse videos when investigating for Medicaid fraud. Maybe the doctor had some influential friends in the harvey county court system and in Praire View’s managment. Fortunately our government auditors are less concerned about creating negative headlines than Buzz Merritt’s “Community Journalists” at the Eagle who like to tell us what we need to know or what Nola Foulston decides what constitutes criminal activity.

Fascism & celebrity journalism is alive & well in Kansas. I hope Judge Roth & Judge Yost will enjoy their celebrity status. Give me call Mike Lehr. I have your back covered.

Like I said in the other area about this- she did FINE with the speech. The speech hit the occassion well. After a state of the union, people do not want the Democrat to get up there and dump all over the President. They want a lighter “the President offered some good goals and we stand ready to work with him on these” and not a “this dolt messed up the economy and got us into a never ending war”. Such a speech would have been a turn off to moderates. So I think she was the right person for the job and she gave the right speech for the occassion. …and btw, I have YET to find a democratic website, outside of Kansas, that thought sebelius did a good job. Even the DEMOCRATS think she sucked. Well, except for the cult of sebelius folks in ks…

I have been thinking about voting for Obama…

The only reason I disliked Clinton after the BJ thing was because of how ugly Monica was. At lest he could have gotten a hummer from a playboy playmate, I mean come on, hes the leader of the free world…

    I agree Farmgrl,

Sebelius sounded like a robot being forced to read a speach she didnt like or write. If you compair her speaking that night to other speaches, she was much more toned down, much more flat in her speaking…

    Farmgrrl,

You keep referencing that singer like he’s making a policy for Obama. Is he like the Klan threatening lives or has he simply stated his personal opinions.

Maybe Obama is just using the guy as a singer, that’s a service. How many stores or services do you use that you’re knowing their politics and beliefs.

You could be doing business with anyone and they have opinions like that guy.

Is Obama supposed to tell that guy to believe differently? Are outraged citizens like you changing his mind? Are his sales suffering?

It’s just a service, not a political statement Obama is making by using that singer.

Without that guy, where is Obama continuing to be a bigot?

Bush and Cheney never will be punished for making up evidence Colin Powell shared at the UN.

Congress authorized the war and Pentagon agreed.

Clinton lied about Monica, impeachment proceedings occurred in the House of Representatives. Clinton suffered a major penalty for lying about it. His “I didn’t sleep with that woman” was a bold face lie.

I again say Clinton’s lying was worse than the Iraq fake evidence. Clinton was penalized, Bush and Cheney will never be.

No matter the questions and warnings from CIA, Bush believed in that evidence to start the Iraq war. Other countries had some of the same data about Saddam.
