Is McCain too old to be president?

mccainlookingincamera.jpgChoppy-sock actor Chuck Norris, a Mike Huckabee supporter, says John McCain is too old to be president. He cited a (scientific?) theory that the presidency accelerates the aging process by a 3-to-1 ratio.

“If John takes over the presidency at 72 and he ages 3-to-1, how old will he be in four years? Eighty-four years old — and can he handle that kind of pressure in that job?”

He went on to fear that McCain might not make it through a four-year term.

McCain might note former President Ronald Reagan’s winning response to questions about his age in the 1984 campaign: “I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience.”

Note that by Norris’ formula, Reagan, nearly 78 when he left office, was actually nearly 102.

McCain is not too old, just too stubborn and too liberal. McCain is not a conservative by any measure other than foreign policy. McCain may be principled, but he is also stubborn, combative with others, thin skinned, and worst of all often wrong about important issues. McCain seems to be very weak at putting principles into practice. Campaign finance reform? Good idea but….McCain Feingold… BAD result. Controlling illegal immigration? Good idea but McCain Kennedy….BAD proposal.
As a nation we are yearning for competence from our government. If you want someone who will take on tough problems with good intension, but make them worse…then McCain is your man. If you want someone who will take on tough problems and insist on bottom line results, then Romney is your man.

John Balee, former Tae Kwon Do instructor here in Wichita, and former Korean Heavyweight Champ, actually told me that he defeated Norris, in a tournament once.

John died of Leukemia, years ago. He was the guy in the “King Kung Fu” Gorilla suit.

Chuck seems like an OK guy. He just can’t act.

    As for McCain’s age?

There are lots of other reasons to vote against him.

I think McCain would make a great Defense Secretary.

More relevant, is his health good? Granted, older people tend to have more health problems, but our youngest president in history had his share of health problems as well–many of which were caused by his military service. So, age is not necessarily an accurate forecaster of health.

So, has anyone heard any negative indications of McCain’s health?

McCain can barely walk down a flight of stairs, and can’t lift his arms above his shoulders. I think age is something to definitely talk about in his case. In Reagan’s case, age and disease were affecting his performances, especially later in his Presiduncy. Anyone who doesn’t admit this is not a realist.

Typical press comment picking up remarks by the beautiful people. You can also say Obama is too young. Hillary sure has lots of wrinkles given to her by Bill. McCain is certainly better than Hillary Care.

McCain isn’t old, just many of his ideas, like wanting to keep Americans dying in Iraq for the next 100 years and wanting to invade Iran just for the sake of invading Iran.

Reagan was 69 when he got re-elected, not much younger than McCain. These Republican loons still worship at the altar of Zombie Reagan.

Then again, why should anyone care what comedian actor Chuck Norris thinks?

    Ben,

    Actually, it was:

What do you find underneath Chuck Norris’s beard?

    Another Fist!

I have met the man in person, shook his hand, and have the picture. All this in Iraq where Chuck came to support the troops.

He is a very nice respectable person.

“What do you find underneath Chuck Norris’s beard?

    Another Fist!”

Uh yeah. Huckabee found that clever for an ad.

The truth? The line is lifted from an episode of the animated TV show “Family Guy”. I love that show. Huckabee not so much. I find it odd if he is a fellow fan.

McCain? Can’t ya just feel the warm con love for him here?

Ron Paul gets called a kook. Well, affording his bad time as a prisoner of war into it, McCain don’t seem to play with a full deck himself. He was so shabbily treated by the bush gang. Then he fell right back into march like a good little bushbot.

Of all the con choices, I hate him second to least.

    JR,

The family guy episode was actually using the joke about chuck norris from the “Chuck Norris Facts” jokes which had been around a bit longer before that family guy episode came on.

The truth, as you said, is that for a while these Chuck Norris jokes were going around and then the family guy episode picked them up (particularly this one) and later in the add Chuck and Huckabee used it as well.

So it was not lifted of the TV show. It was in existence before the TV show.

Paul – at one time I might have voted for him. However, after he endured the Bush/Rove hatchet job in 2000 just to come back and kiss Bush’s rear he lost any chance for my support.

Maybe using Norris’ logic I can simply attribute that behavior on his part to Altzheimers.

    Ben,

If you watch the video, Chuck was giving a quick summary of why he wasn’t supporting the other candidates and just before he said what he did about John McCain’s age he also said:

“John who I loved, whom I have known for many years…”

It was not an “attack” it was his honest opinion on why he was not supporting John.

Well I don’t read joke books or any other literature about Chuck Norris. I find him uninteresting. I stand corrected the source of the line.

Hmmm here’s one way it might go down.

If I’m Huckabee, maybe I take McCains age into account, and be his running mate. Hedging my bet that McCain will die and I get the job.

If THAT happens, the cons get the whole big production a President dying or falling gravely ill in office brings…high theater. Plays to emotions. Maybe a bump next mid term depending how things go.

I bet Huckabee thinks about it. Willard won’t. He’s a me first right now kinda guy.

My God, the Earth has changed it’s rotation – I agree with Upchuck Norris on something!

McCain is too old. We tried this experiment once before and it didn’t work out too well. Ronald “Trees Cause Pollution” Reagan was a huge joke as a president, especially in his latter years.

McCain would be three years older than Reagan when he takes office, should he win.

At the very least, we need someone that will actually be awake during his presidency.

We don’t know how long Reagan had Alzheimer’s before he died. As a nurse I know Alzheimer’s doesn’t just suddenly appear. It starts as much as 20 years before the person dies of related symptoms. When the President Reagan testified in the Iran contra scandal he could not remember the event, I believe him. It could have been a sign of his Alzheimer’s and the older you get the increase chance of some type of dementia. Do we really want a President who can’t remember or is a really puppet for his advisors. IMHO, Who WE elect is who WE want to run the country not the wife or advisors.

McCain has been through a lot of crap in his years. He may be on the aged side of life, but I don’t think that will affect his presidential duties, should he be elected. However, I do think he is too liberal on certain Republican issues. If he took a more Conservative view on these issues, I believe he would probably win the nomination. I’m going to stick with Romney in ‘08.
