Free the City Hall smashup tape!

tvremoteCity Hall has been acquiring a reputation for tightfisted secrecy with public records, most recently confirmed by its refusal to release a videotape of the Jan. 7 incident in which a man drove his car through City Hall, causing an estimated $200,000 damage.

City Attorney Gary Rebenstorf claims the tape is evidence that, if made public now, could compromise a trial.

That’s a stretch, considering the tape already has been circulated among two City Council members and employees of several city departments. Doug Anstaett, executive director of the Kansas Press Association, called the city’s withholding of the tape “preposterous” and noted, “If several city officials have seen this tape and reportedly gotten quite a kick out of it, it apparently isn’t as confidential as law enforcement would lead us to believe.”

City Council member Jim Skelton also voiced skepticism, saying, “If it’s evidence, either nobody sees it or everybody sees it.”

Release the tape.

But question is, how many of those that have viewed the tape would be juriors in the suspect’s trial?

I couldn’t get witness statements in an accident I was involved in. The cop said they were “investigative records.” The whole state needs a wood rasp shoved up its anus.

The bigger question is, how many employees who work in that building and are responsible for assessing the level of damage NEEDED to see it?

The department that runs the security cameras would want to review the coverage to make sure the cameras worked as designed. The security staff would need to review it for other potential threats. Building maintenance would need to review it to assess possible damage that was not apparent on observation. Engineers would have to review it for similar reasons.

This is a typical tempest in a teapot “headline for any reason”. Once again, the Eagle is attacking the City. Like the recent “news” article about how the City had exhausted its annual street clearing budget–duh, that article appeared on December 28, 2 days before the new budget took effect. Typical non story by the Eagle that tries to show the City in a bad light.

    This tape should be released.

Heh, I was down there at City hall the other day. In the dark and upset or drunk as the guy was, he was one helluva driver. I saw what he was able to do and at 45 miles per hour no less.

    Release the tape!
