It’s not reassuring that World War III could have been caused by a ham radio prankster.
The tense incident on Jan. 6 involving Iranian speedboats buzzing U.S. Navy ships in the Strait of Hormuz almost erupted into armed conflict when a radio transmission, allegedly from the Iranians, said in English, “I am coming to you. You will explode in a few minutes.â€
Navy gunners came within seconds of firing on the boats. Now the Navy says the strange message likely was the work of the longtime high-seas prankster known as the “Filipino Monkey,†who has been harassing ships for years with radio abuse.
It’s a reminder of the dangers of hair-trigger tensions between nations. This could have been an international incident had not cooler heads prevailed.

It is important to note that even now the US does NOT get the bulk of our imported oil from Gulf states; rather, mostly from Western Hemisphere suppliers (Canada, Mexico, and Venezuela, primarily, IIRC). The supply line to the bulk of the world’s petroleum supply is no less a US interest, however.
Simply sniping that we shouldn’t be there at all displays a level of naivete that is astounding to behold.
Also, do not minimize the threat that small craft can pose, especially in large scale coordinated attacks. See this:

Jeez guys, get a grip! It’s the job of the U.S. Navy to project an American presence in international waters any place in the world. To deny the strategic importance of the Persian Gulf and the Straits is crazy. If the Straits were to be closed to shipping, you’d be seeing $10 a gallon gas pretty quick and our economy would be on the ropes. Like it or not, we have interests in that part of the world that have to be protected.

Doug, what if there were 100 speedboats? 500? 1,000? Ever watch ants take down larger prey? In 2002, the U.S. Navy commissioned wargames to test this scenario. Guess what? Warships lost against a force consisting of speedboats. And we have no idea what those speedboats were carrying.
Being against the war is one thing. Being a bunch of isolationist cowards is something entirely different.
