South-central Kansans don’t know much about the state’s new attorney general, Stephen Six. His resume looks solid, if somewhat brief — Douglas County District Court judge, former private attorney, former clerk for a U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals judge, son of retired Kansas Supreme Court Justice Fred Six. For now, it’s enough that his selection today by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius puts a welcome period at the end of the sad story of Paul Morrison’s sex scandal and resignation.
Science and technology are at the heart of many of America’s challenges and controversies, from climate change and alternative energy to stem-cell research and teaching evolution.
Too often, though, science is pushed to the sidelines of presidential debates to make way for presumably weightier topics, such as whether Hillary Clinton is really likable or whether Dennis Kucinich saw a UFO.
My column today supports a bipartisan grassroots effort to hold a science and technology debate sometime during the election season.
I think it’s a great idea, and it’s fast gaining support. See the group’s Web site.
Wichita must not be apathetic about its crime surge in 2007, especially the 65 percent increase in homicides. The city also saw more rapes, robberies and burglaries last year. Wichita Police Chief Norman Williams was right to address the statistics directly this week, a day after Mayor Carl Brewer promised a crackdown on gang violence. Williams suggested adding a downtown patrol bureau, as more businesses attract more people to the core.
But City Hall should not be alone in feeling the heat. Such alarming crime statistics also are a call to the community’s businesses, neighborhood associations, churches and individuals to seek solutions that will improve public safety and peace of mind.
Though Mulvane residents are deeply divided on the issue, it wasn’t too surprising that the Mulvane City Council endorsed a Harrah’s casino resort proposal this week, given the 1 percent share of revenue that is at stake. After the Sumner County Commission didn’t endorse either of the two casino proposals for the Mulvane exit of the Kansas Turnpike, instead picking two proposals at the Wellington exit, the Mulvane City Council annexed strips of land linking the town to where the casino would be located, about five miles away. The council’s endorsement of the project (and its possible future endorsement of the other Mulvane proposal) makes the Mulvane exit the most likely spot to land the casino — as the Kansas Lottery will want the proposal that can make the state the most money.
