Per an Associated Press report: “U.S. House members spent $20.3 million in tax money last year to send constituents what’s often the government equivalent of junk mail — meeting announcements, tips on car care and job interviews, surveys on public policy and just plain bragging.â€

Those House members should be ashamed of themselves for spending money, causing employment for all those printing houses. (This is just Sarcasm)
It’s a perk. Basically a non-issue. But lets assume someone did a Pareto chart on government waste. It would hardly make the chart. Fix Medicare fraud first, then go down the list and fix the next in line, etc.. After fixing about 4 or 5 hundred other wasteful programs, you might get to the topic of this thread. AP shooting from the lip trying to create a problem where there is none.
For the record: The city is out of money for snow storms; The Kellogg project is how many millions over budget; the white elephant, known as the downtown arena, will go at least 20 million over budget (enough to cover the postage cost of the house), and we get this thread. How about keeping us posted on the money trail for the arena. Bet that would be an eye opener.
There is NO recycling in the city, and no attempt to start one that I can find. The city, for one this size, sure has a backwards attitude towards modernization. But that’s okay; we got a postage problem in the house.
No problem it’s our money they are spending to tell us what a good job they are doing. HA!
The full-color glossy oversized (EXTRA postage) mailer I received from Tiahrt a couple days ago went into the trash. Can’t tell you what it might have said as long ago I quit trying to make any sense of this incompetent. Even taking it to the recycle bins isn’t possible since the overboard extravagance of his stupidity doesn’t fit in acceptable items.
We need to find a way to turn junk mail into fuel..I saw a program one time about a guy who saved all his junk mail, rolled it into really tight logs, then burned them for heat all winter long. If someone could come up with a small affordable machine that would process and roll junk mail and other waste paper into logs that could be burned to heat a home, they could make a million.
I got the same flyer..what a damn liar!! HE cares about children, so he voted AGAINST expanding SCHIP? That flyer was so full of self-promoting lies and spin it was shameful. He’s being paid by the tobacco companies to vote against SCHIP because if the cigarette tax is approved to fund it, smoking may get so expensive that people might actually quit. He cares about the money that tobacco companies give him, NOT children.
Children who have parents making $50,000.00 and over should have a parent willing to buy health insurance, out of pocket.SCHIP expansion was a real waste, and I am glad if failed.
By the way, the MSM does not like ANYONE to get between them and the public. Not even our elected officials. The Eagle wants to tell us what people think and do.The Eagle hates it when politicians speak to us directly. This is a major reason why the press supported “McCain Feingold” which was a direct attack on the 1st Amendment.
“SCHIP expansion was a real waste, and I am glad if failed.”
But you made sure you got the half baked excuse bush used to kill it out there first there didn’t ya?
I need to and others should check out the Proks Miller recycling site. I understand they take lots of stuff. My brother goes there a lot.
Huh I didn’t get the Tiahrt ad.
Um….put em on a dartboard? Colorful new years confetti?
J R,
Register as a Republican. Hold your nose and just do it. It allows you to vote in primaries (in Kansas there are seldom any Democratic candidates to “narrow down”), you receive mailers and newsletters and updates allowing you to be “in the know.” Or, write and send emails to your Congressmen who add you to their mailing lists. Gotta keep informed in all ways possible.
I’m sure Tiahrt and the other Republicans don’t use the socialistic practice of free mail delivery. That would be hypocritical for a bunch of “free market” “economic conservatives”.
Usually I don’t get my mail from Tiahrt until a couple days before the election in violation of the election laws. But since there won’t be any FEC after Jan. 1st I guess it really doesn’t matter.
econ101..you have the right to agree with his “no” vote on the SCHIP…but the fact he claims his “concern for poor children” was his rationale for opposing the expansion makes me want to throw up. It was greed driven, nothing more.We should have at least nationalized health care for those under the age of 18. Every child deserves to have adequate health care…even families making $50,000 per year would have a hard time buying private insurance…it’s too expensive. Health care should be a right, not a privelege.
You need to come down out of that ivory tower you live in and see the real world. Too many children go without health care because their parents can’t afford it..even with both parents working.
What do you expect? The first job of any politician is not to represent his constituency, it’s to represent himself TO his constituency in order to get reelected. Sending out mailings is proof that he’s at least in Washington on occasion.
Has Tiahrt ever returned those thousands of dollars he got from the terrorist Erick Prince whose employees shoot Iraqi civilians for entertainment? Or did he send out a mailing bragging about his success in shifting billions of dollars in no-bid contracts to an endless occupation that cost $15 billion a month?
Just another day of liberals demonizing those they disagree with instead of trying to have a rational discussion.
I know Tiahrt and have a friend who works for him.
To try and say he cares more about Tobacco and not children is simply assinine.
It only shows your complete irrationality and inability to hold any type of reasonable discussion.
This is a water molecule in the bucket compared to the billions that end up in their buddie’s pockets. This is just thrown out to draw attention away from all the other money that is wasted or ends up with their buddies. Happy new year.
Stop the mailings.
They can brag about all their “accomplishments” on a Congressional web site – already paid for by taxpayers.
There’s nothing but BS on any of the mailings I’ve received.
Bragging about more Socialist programs, and then spending $20 million to tell me how they increases socialist spending.
Ain’t they all great?
Vote ALL the incumbents out!
“I know Tiahrt and have a friend who works for him.

Big woop, Nathan.
He’s nothing but a self promoting asshole. He’s in the pockets of the tobacco companies and you know it. The expansion of SCHIP would be funded by an extra tax on cigarettes, but he thinks that would be “an unfair burden on poor people” who smoke. He cares more about the affordability of cigarettes than he cares about healthcare for children. He says he’s pro-life, but he doesn’t care that millions of American children are uninsured because their WORKING parents can’t afford to pay for health insurance. The only concern he has is for the insurance and tobacco industries. He’s a bible thumping, gun toting, self serving hypocrite is ever there was one.
You asked how I think life started…let me tell you, there is no evidence at all that it started in the Garden of Eden. If you believe that, then who do you believe created God?
It is so easy to say whatever you want about someone you have not taken the opportunity to really know. No matter who it is. Have you taken the time to visit with the person that represents you? Have you taken the time to follow their voting record (complete record not just what you read about)?
How many of you are willing to run for office? How many of you volunteer to work for a candidate? They could use the help during the campaign and in their offices.
You would be more informed about what is going on.
Uh yeah.
I emailed toad several times.
I always got a perfunctory form letter.
Then, I got a suggestion that if I wanted representation, I should move to another state.
