They’re working on it

Bloggers: We’re aware of the problem with the hyperactive spam filter on Typepad, and have registered our concerns with them. Here’s Typepad’s response as of this morning:

"Today we have made a change to the spam filter that should greatly
reduce the number of legitimate comments marked as spam. More
information is available at Everything TypePad.
If you are still seeing legitimate comments marked as spam, please
include the text of the comment in your help ticket. Thanks!"

We hope that solves the problem. In the meantime, be aware that The Eagle plans to change blog providers in the near future.

Thank you. We understand that this is a service, and we are not ‘entitled’ to anything. But we have come to think of this place where we chat and think and discuss (sometime nicely, sometimes not) as our own.

We appreciate it, and we appreciate your help in working out this bug.

    Change BLOG PROVIDERS!

Holy troll-kill, Batman, we could have registration and banning like other Blogs, and you know what that means don’t you?

    Hasta la vista, disruptors . . .

Capn, a long time ago you and I disagreed about regestration and such. Seeing what’s happened on the blog the past year has changed my mind.

Lock it down, make everybody register, ban the trolls.

Thanks, Because spellcheck is not usedable here I type a lot into word, then paste. That is when I get the filter. It has been extreme lately.

    XXX–

I think one’s perspective makes a difference depending on how much you post.

I used to be a posting maniac, so the trolling drove me crazy, but now that I only pop on once in awhile, it seems a lot less annoying.

Also, the blog monitoring seems to have had a preventative effect as well as punishing effect on flame posts.

I hope that this does not work against me but the word spam is included in my email address.I am not going to change it; I have had it for over three years.

Save yourself some time and trouble, RS.Use Firefox as your browser and you’ll have spellcheck right here on the blog. Easy as 1-2-3.

Alright Eagle buttwipes, as if it’s not bad enough having to deal with your POS spambots and filters, I just got the “squiggly line thing and could barely make it out.

You’re really starting to piss me off!

    Capn:

You note the correlation between your posting less and less flaming posts.

Coincidence? I think not. You are one of the primary flamers/disrupters.

In attempting to bring down one of what you see as a “troll” (which you define as one who disagrees with you), you became what you hated.

    Congratulations.

Stinging words of rebuke there, GMC.

I’ll reflect on them with same degree of charity in which you wrote them . . .

    Typepad calls that ‘captcha’ XXX.

I just read the Typepad help section and they have really screwed themselves on Blogs that don’t have a monitor or a full time monitor.

Evidently, they made it where comments have to be approved if there is anything the spam guard disagrees with. And it could be a myriad of things – a lot which makes no sense to the average users.

Also, they are more or less forcing users of Typepad blogs to sign in with Typepad. I’ll try it and see if works. It hasn’t helped in the recent past though.

I used to say that we should have a login and registration set up too.

I am on several other forums which use that.

However, the more persistent trolls simply create a new account and new name shortly after being banned.

I am sure it would help a little bit, but it is not perfect either.

    Posted December 20, 2007 at 12:13 pm | Permalink

Also, GMC, your favorite slogan that “a troll is anyone who says something that CapnA (and the Libs) disagree with” is patently false.

Continually repeating it over and over doesn’t make it true.

To my best recollection, I have never accused you of being a troll, nor Hank Price, nor Max, nor Heckler, nor Nathan, nor Ksgrm, nor outlander, nor ProudMan, nor just about anyone on the hard right (even though I disagree with them most of the time).

On the other hand, I have chastised someone on the web publicly who politically agrees with me that I suspected of trolling.

If you don’t “get it” by now, then I guess you’re never going to get it.

But don’t keep repeating the untruth that “a troll is anyone you (libs) disagree with.” There’s no evidence to support that and quite a bit that runs counter to it.

Actually, the new changes are due to TypePad’s mess ups.

I can think of at least 2 posters who should be totally banned from the blog. One is a persistent troll and the other an over the top liar. Both of them are republicans.

  32. CapnAmerica
    Posted December 20, 2007 at 12:56 pm | Permalink

One example, Steven, was the post-er who was trolling GMC of all people: “gmc70,” remember him?

I called him out on it on more than one occasion.

I assume he was on our side of the political aisle.

As for trolling a troll, I do plead guilty as charged.

  33. Posted December 20, 2007 at 12:58 pm | Permalink

Actually the other ones who should be banned are the ones who post as anonymous posters, such as reader, when in fact they are regular Lib posters.

Typepad is, indeed, the source of the problem, period.

I do think “going after” trolls (perceived or not) quickly becomes pointless: it’s just like putting out a nice buffet. Bad idea.

I do hope any registration is easy. Hmmm suggested, I think, the simplest idea: Register with a (real) email address, and clink on the link in a confirmation email to activate your acct. It’s pretty common.

And, no, it won’t completely stop trolls. But it might make it more of a hassle (for them) than it’s worth. Let’s hope it’s not a huge hassle for US.

If it wasn’t clear earlier, Phillip & Co., you of course don’t “owe” us squat. Thanks!

    Changes to the blog?

I like it the way it is.

I am THRILLED to get a new program. I hate this set up, and always have. I do enjoy the bantering on the blog though most of the time even with ones I do not agree.

I am sure the new program was from both items. The trolling is ridiculous. I’m happy to see it GO.

    Hi –

An update and an apology from the TypePad team.

As detailed in this Everything TypePad blog post (http://everything.typepad.com/blog/2007/12/spam-update-we.html), we fixed the overzealous anti-spam filter yesterday. You and your readers should be able to comment as normal now. We sincerely apologize for interrupting the conversation on your blog and are putting in place some processes to make sure that if the anti-spam system tries to get too aggressive again, we can dial it back more quickly.

Please do let us know how we’re doing, and get in touch using the help ticket system if you need any assistance.
