I’m doing the Santa Clause thing.

Probably the last time. My son is 13 and very suspicious.

I like to think it is not wrong to keep him thinking that he only has to be good for good to come to him. He’ll know reality soon enough.

Suspicious at 13? Heh, you kept it up long than my folks could. Of course, I had older siblings too!

JR, though I know all to well what you mean, the “Santa Claus thing “ need not end. In my own life, when it seem that I can not even muster one feeling of heart felt joy this time of year. Someone or something happens that breaks that feeling of loss. One year it was the door bell ringing and upon opening the door no one was there. But on the steps were trash bags of gifts for both the kids and us. The odd thing was we had three outside dogs that were no more than eight feet away from that door. And they tended to bark at everything that came close to the house. But not a peep came from them, in fact when I opened the door they sounded off.

I get a phone call from a friend that I do not hear from for some time as life has taken us in different directions. Yet when we speak the years rush away and it is like a gift, perhaps that is the best description of a true friend. BUT JR though I have only met you a few time, I have gotten the feeling that Santa in real life is a feisty, combative when he believes in his cause, guy that so want to believe all is lost. But set about in his ways to make everything better that he can. You help the neighbor when they had a problem in their drive and strangers get unstuck. He may say he would not give a dine for his fellow man, but if it would save one persons life would give his all.

No Santa Claus is not a dead idea, but he only shows up in less green and red ways. His gifts are not wrapped in pretty paper. Often they are wrapped in a glove on the back of a car trunk, a bag of gifts left in the dark. A warm word said in a cold world, instead of a smattering of toys on a floor. They are that one thing that is given when all seems lost. That my friend is the gifts of Santa Claus, he just does not appear as a fat, jolly bearded man ( OK unless we are talking about that friend I hear from about once a year).

    Merry Christmas, one and all!

    Luke 2

1And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

2(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

3And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

4And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

5To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

6And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

7And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

8And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

I am hereby officially tendering my resignation as an adult. I have decided I would like to accept the responsibilities of a 5 year old again.

I want to return to a time when all I knew about were colors, multiplication tables, and nursery rhymes; when I didn’t know what I know now and all I knew was to be happy because I was blissfully unaware of all the things that should make me worried. I want to sail sticks across a fresh mud puddle and make ripples in a pond with rocks. I want to lie under a big oak tree and watch the ants march up its trunk. I want to go fishing and care more about catching the minnows along the shore than the big bass in the lake.

I want to go to McDonald’s and think that it is a four-star restaurant and run a lemonade stand with my friends on a hot summer’s day. I want to think that a quarter is worth more than a dollar bill because it is prettier and weighs more. I want to think M&M’s are better than money because you can eat them. I want to think the world is fair.I want to think that everyone is honest and good. I want to believe that anything is possible. I want to be oblivious to the complexities of life and be overly excited by the little things in life again. I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs, a kind word, truth, dreams, the imagination, the Tooth Fairy, a kiss that makes a boo-boo go away, making angels in the snow, and that my dad and God are the strongest people in the world.

So — here’s my checkbook, car keys, credit cards and bills, my 401K statements, stocks and bonds, collections, insurance premiums, my job, my house and the payments that come with it, my e-mail address, pager, cell phone, computer, and watch. I am officially resigning from adulthood; and if you want to discuss this with me further, you’ll have to catch me cause. – “Tag! You’re it!”

I loved your post, MHawk…a desire to return to a simpler time. At least I loved it until I recognized the similarity between your seemingingly innocent and fun post and the Liberal mantra that is posted here so often.

People that are not responsible for themselves should be cared for by the government, whether is it welfare, government provided health care, subsidized television digital converters, homeless shelters, etc. (sort of like how our parents cared for us when we were young and irresponsible).

Rules for our own protection were made by our parents. Now the libs want a law everytime there is a potential for some kind of harm (ban the payday lenders).

Seems a remarkable similarity in how libs want to replace their parents with the government to watch over us.

Rep. Wexler calls for Cheney’s impeachmentBY LESLEY CLARKRep. Robert Wexler is taking on the Bush administration — in cyberspace. The Boca Raton Democrat has launched a website — wexlerwantshearings.com — and is gathering signatures calling for impeachment hearings against Vice President Dick Cheney.

”Our Constitution mandates that the House of Representatives hold presidents and vice presidents accountable when they commit high crimes,” Wexler says in a video on the site, which suggests, among other things, that Cheney manipulated intelligence to boost the case for war against Iraq and was involved in the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame.

Within two days of posting, Wexler said he had surpassed his goal of 50,000 signatures and is aiming for 250,000. He’s written an op-ed article with two fellow members of the House Judiciary committee, calling for hearings into whether Cheney violated the Constitution.

    Good morning Capn.,

Wexler has hurt my feelings a little. Samson is getting regular email updates since he signed the petition but Wexler doesn’t email me at all.

I would like to see the dems attempt to impeach Cheney, it would show them for the inconsequential nitwits they are. Cheney would eat their lunch.

Just rejoining the world of the living. Slept really late. Had our Christmas last night so daughter in laws could spend today with their families. Had a great time. Thanked God for a really great year. Called son and his family in Virginia. Did a conference call so all could participate. Isn’t life great?

Merry Christmas to all. I’m sure politics will rear it’s ugly head but I refuse to even consider it today.

Wish I’d found this gem in time for the Huckabee thread. Here is a sample and link:

“Huckabee’s brand of populism isn’t nearly as strident (read lunatic) as Buchanan’s. But to describe it as watery doesn’t do it justice. Huckabee’s posture on matters of taxing, trading, and even faith represent something shrewder: Buchananism minus the bombast, the paranoia, the out-front efforts to court the clenched-fist-and-camouflage crowd. And in this regard, the message and the messenger are the same—which could well make them more formidable, and no less disconcerting, than Buchanan and his gospel were in 1996.”

As this year rushes to an end and we know we have to make a big decision in 2009 – a little food for thought.

    The Ant & The Grasshopper

    TRADITIONAL VERSION:

The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed. The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Be responsible for yourself!

    MODERN VERSION

The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be warm and well fed while others are cold and starving.

CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food.

America is stunned by the sharp contrast.

How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?

Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper, and everybody cries whenthey sing, ‘It’s Not Easy Being Green.’

Jesse Jackson stages a demonstration in front of the ant’s house where the news stations film the group singing, ‘We shall overcome.’ Jesse then has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper’s sake.

Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry & Harry Reid exclaim in an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.

Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity and Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer! The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay hisretroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the government.

Hillary Clinton gets her old law firm to represent the grasshopper in a defamation suit against the ant, and the case is tried before a panel of federal judges that Bill Clinton appointed from a list of single-parent welfare recipients.

    The ant loses the case.

The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits of the ant’s food while the government house he is in, which just happens to be the ant’s old house, crumbles around him because he doesn’t do anything to maintain it.

The ant has disappeared in the snow.

The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Be very careful how you vote in 2008

Leave it to the CONs to get it entirely wrong. Let’s look at the reality of these two insects.

What’s the difference between the grasshopper and the ant?

The grasshopper is a individualist. The ant works together with many others for the benefit of all.

The grasshopper who works just as hard as the ant relies entirely on himself. The winter comes and he dies.

The ant works together with thousands of others and the ant colony lives year after year.
