I expected to be the first and only person here today because, from what I am seeing, most of the usual early morning people on here are probably sitting in their cold dark dwellings because of the nasty ice storm. I am watching it on TV here in Atlanta right now and I am sorry. Hopefully you all will get your electricity and internet back soon! Meanwhile I have got a dilemma on whether I should wear shorts today or sweat it out with long pants! You know these sunny 75 degree days can be a drag!
Kev, Why do you have to be like that?LOL
Can it get any crazier? Pregnencies now being exported to India: 1=10715″ rel=”nofollow”>http://lifestyle.msn.com/mindbodyandsoul/womenintheworld/articlemc.aspx?cp-documentid=5835633>1=10715
In Wichita, the storm was not as bad as expected.
So far.
It’s that “so far,” that worries me, J R. We sure have a lot of ice-making material IF the temps drop as predicted.
Kev,I heard a story on NPR not long ago that Atlanta had a severe water shortage. We don’t have that problem in ICT today, and we have ice in the trees, but J R is right, it is not yet as bad as we expected. I am thinking it might be worse up north.
KFG, how is it?
We are right on the edge.
There IS ice on the trees and bushes.
But it does not seem to be building up. Streets mostly ok so far. Just water.
A degree or two the other way and it will be bad.
I guess it IS bad in SE Kansas and worse in Oklahoma.
Hi Steven! Not too bad. Icy and cold but not much wind. It is worse south and east of where I live.
As long as the power stays on, the critters and I are fine. I did fill all the water jugs and bathtub though, just in case :)
Is anyone else having trouble posting today? It takes some of my posts but not others. Says it cant find typepad.
WTF?
Kev, I saw a few days ago that Atlanta has 4 mo.s water supply, what are their contingency plans?
2 blocks from me, my sister-in-law has lost her elect.
As governor of Arkansas five years ago, Mike Huckabee joined a bipartisan chorus of politicians who concluded that the U.S. trade embargo against Cuba was bad for businesses. Now that he’s a top-tier candidate for president, Huckabee has decided he favors the embargo — so much so that he vowed Monday to outdo even President Bush in strangling the regime of Cuban President Fidel Castro and punishing those who do business there.

.. heard on the news this am that bill says hillary is the most interesting or intelligent person of “our generation”
… puh lease, Hillary doesn’t have a chance and doesn’t need one. Way too many people dislike her — and there’s more than a few men who think (like the Huckster said in 98) in essence women should shut up and stay in the kitchen. (Huckster made those type comments in 98)
I think there are a few women in both parties that might make good pres. candidates and electable just not the Hillary — I wonder how Nancy Kassebaum would have faired either in her day or today — always liked her and Bobby Dole …
… seems the ice here (Mulvane – Rock an d K-15) is melting / water puddling / flowing in the gutters —–
A lot of people have been complaining about trouble with typepad. A change I have noticed is that when I post a link, I get the ‘bot filter we used to get, but otherwise, I haven’t noticed anything else different.
Anybody else?
I have trouble with some links.
They don’t want to copy active, just text.
Otherwise no problems.
SE Wichita maybe an 1/8th inch accumulation of ice on bushes and trees. 33 and the rain just stopped.
The clouds are thinning a little bit. If we could get some sun, there would be many great photo opportunities. I had water gushing down my drive way – no ice.
JR, Steven Davis, just looked at the radar; the reprieve is temporary, another large batch of precipitation is heading our way.
Downtown is dry right now.
Yep, just saw the radar and forecast. It won’t be getting much better any time soon. Tomorrow should be nice, though.

Report: Group Says Iran Hid and Later Resumed Nuclear Weapon Program in 2004
NEW YORK — Iran did shut down its nuclear weapons program in 2003 but restarted it a year later, moving and hiding the equipment to thwart international inspectors, according to an Iranian opposition group, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.
The group, the National Council of Resistance of Iran exposed the country’s nuclear-fuel program in 2002 and now believes a newly released U.S. analysis is giving the wrong impression that Iran’s nuclear program is not an urgent threat, the newspaper reported.

How many positions has Hillary taken on Iraq?
Or Immigration?
Or Iran?
Or $5,000 per new child?
Or 401k for all?
Or NAFTA?
Perhaps Iran is Environmentally concerned Max.
You know, being one of the oil rich nations of the world, Iran needs to build a nuclear reactor site or two, so they can participate in the Kyoto treaty and be environmentally “friendly.”
THAT’S IT!
Iran has a long-standing reputation for being a humanitarian nation.
Just heard Bill Clinton telling us why Hillary isn’t calculating as many believe. It seems she came to the little state of Arkansas to marry a politician with a $26,000 job and a $42,000 campaign debt.
Doesn’t speak well for ‘the smartest woman’ in America does it?
I guess the futures market was calling her name and she knew she could take care of Bill.
ks, I’m sure it was just a physical attraction.
Bill didn’t have glasses yet.
And Hillary, ah, she had to settle.
That means you heard Rush too ksgrm.
Yeah I monitor lord haha. Dif is, I know he is at best a clown.
Bill and Hillary Clinton sound like a good old fashioned American success story to me.
Oh that’s right. They didn’t sell their souls and become Republicans. So their success story is to be forever attacked. It doesn’t count.
Isnt there something somewhere that says, “For better or worse; for richer or poorer; in sickness and in health”??
Seems to me that Bill and Hillary have made it through all of those, right?? And even a few extras thrown in for grins…
I understand Spirit Aeosystems planned ahead, and notified the employees that even though an ice storm was anticipated, they would work. Meanwhile, I also heard Boeing excused employees. Nothing like Profit before People.

Phantom,
Do you think the people who were shot in Colorado brought the shooting on themselves? Was their faith to blame for the incident?
http://blogs.kansas.com/weblog/2007/12/open-thread-121.html#comment-93096622
Tater, once again, you are spinning something to make it fit your narrow mold.. Where does phantom say those who were shot brought it on themselves??
Looks like he says something about the shooter’s mental stability and the shooter’s faith… not the victims!! Maybe you need new reading glasses… This spinning of typed information is getting quite obtuse…
Chas,
This will be the last time I say this to you today (though I’m sure, based on your past performance, that it will have to be repeatedly repeated in the future):
READ THE THREAD AND THE POSTS THAT PHANTOM MADE. You obviously haven’t done that. You’ve made several posts lately that were uninformed. Some are documented on the 12/10 open thread, others on the 12/8 thread.
You perpetually make assumptions that leave you looking foolish. You form “an opinion” that comes, not as a result of reading or evaluating–it’s just some emotion-based goofy thought process on your part. Worse, you espouse your “opinion,” then chide others who HAVE done their reading. You keep asserting that your “opinions” are as good as the next. But that’s only true if you READ and do a little RESEARCH before you spout. Uninformed opionions are NOT as valid as those formed from doing just a little homework. If we look at the same facts and have different opinions, that’s one thing. But you’re prone not to even look at the facts! And if you do, you still come away with a very skewed interpretation of THE FACTS, not an opinion of the reality.
Your Chasisms continue to provide entertainment, but it doesn’t seem anyone is really extending you a lot of credibility here. GMC has already made a suggestion that could only benefit you on the 12/10 open thread: step away from the shovel.
Good advice, Steven D.
Here’s an excerpt:
“Meanwhile, over at that urinal of opinion, Townhall.com, we learn that the woman who shot the shooter was not only the right armed person with a gun at the right time (and a security guard), but she’s a g*****n vessel of godly retribution who shows us all how much we should be dry-humping our guns. Thomas Sowell orgasmically cries, “At Last,” and the blog over there has various commentators commentating on how splendiferous an armed public is, not even recognizing the irony that…oh, f***, never mind.”
Yes Steven I think that site should be at the top of everyones reading list. I used to respect your opinion, not because I agreed with you but because I thought you were honestly espousing an opinion. No longer.
I quite frankly am tired of those on the left making light of such a serious matter. Lifes were at stake and because a woman was armed many lifes were saved. Where is the humor?
I saw comments on all things ‘right’ but where was the comments on the joke Algore is perpetrating on the global public. How about some honest dialogue on the ‘carbon footprint’ of this sham conference the greens are having. Where is any comment on the amount of carbon offsets to cancel out their private jets.
Yeah, I’m real impressed with your link as you can tell.
Cool it with the fake moral outrage, ksgrm.
You never respected what Steven D. posted before, and we don’t respect what you post either.
If we can’t respect each other, at least let’s be HONEST about it, and leave it at that.
Cap you and I don’t know each other and I am sure never will. I have in the past had many good decussions with Steven D. This wasn’t one of his best ones. I would expect it from you. Maybe you are nic stealing again.
You are right about one thing you haven’t ever done anything to earn my respect.
You don’t even have to tell me you don’t respect me. I’ll just take that as a given.
You know if you believe that so strongly maybe one of those leading men like Algore should take Rush up on the wager he proposed today. His entire ‘fortune’ against the fortune of Al if this hasn’t happened by 2020.
Al keeps saying in 10 years, just wait 10 more years, give us just 10 more years. How long will you believe.
Many credible scientist have said it ain’t so and all the greens argue against this with is ‘these are not peer reviewed scientist’ these are credible, etc…
Bush keeps saying give us 6 more months, or we’ve turned the corner.
“Phantom,
Do you think the people who were shot in Colorado brought the shooting on themselves? Was their faith to blame for the incident?”
No, I don’t blame the victims, Liberals rarely if ever do that.Could some actions by the institution been a trigger to the events that followed, seems plausible maybe even likely. Was the request to spend the night a final test of christian compassion, we’ll never know for sure.Did the shooter have problems, definitely. Were those problems precipitated by his indoctrination of his faith, kind of think they were.
Phantom:
Just trying to make sure I understand you here…
You state: “Could some actions by the institution been a trigger to the events that followed, seems plausible maybe even likely. Was the request to spend the night a final test of christian compassion, we’ll never know for sure.”
Am I correct in understanding that you believe the staff at YWAM *should* have allowed admittance to a man who had sent threatening correspondence to the center, and posted overt threats to kill as many Christians as he could? Granted, the staff may or may not have been aware of what the shooter wrote, but you must admit that they exercised appropriate discernment. Your response brings up a series of other questions:
1. Do you understand what the consequences of allowing the guy in the building would have been?
2. Do you understand he was intent, by his own admission, on killing as many as he could?
3. Do you understand that compassion is not what he was seeking?
4. Do you understand he wasn’t looking for a warm bed for the night, as though he had no where to stay? (Do you realized he lived in his parents’ home? Do you realize his father is a prominent neuro surgeon and researcher, who presumably makes a very good income?)
5. Do you realize what this reveals about your discernment and ability to make sound decisions and form reasonable conclusions?
Bush keeps saying give us 6 more months, or we’ve turned the corner.

And ya know somethin’, “Phantom!”
He’s right!!!
We’ve been “turning the corner” for four-and-a-half years already.
Which is the same as going in circles.
Tater, you are getting way too dizzy from your persistent spinning… I chllenged you to show where Phantom has ANYWHERE stated that the victims of the shooting brought it on themselves… And your response???More of your stupid ignorant SPIN! And NO I wont let up on your spinning…. You can call me anything you want, and I will keep on calling you on your lack of proper quotes, and your spin!

What if you are WRONG?
What if Rush….now this is gonna require you to stretch your tiny imagination…

I want to do just a little experiment… Those of you who are ANTI Global Warming >>>
Can you type a brief, to the point, definition of what you believe peer reviewed articles means… I am working on a hunch here… Thanks!!
Hey, will you look at that?? Tater knows how to cut and paste shortcuts!! WOW!! Impressive!!
Tater, EACH ONE of those things you so stupidly post up there, are simply opinions… Can nobody but YOU have an opinion here??
And what is it that makes you think that YOUR opinions are the only opinions on the entire BLOG that are RIGHT??
Hey, it is possible that we could ALL be wrong!! You cant seem to find anything I have posted that said the security guard did something WRONG… All you can find are my opinions of the entire situation at that particular church… Good grief, are you really THAT narrow minded?? Never mind, dont answer that!!
Tater, disagreement means we dont agree on this issue… WHY do you keep dragging it out beyond that very obvious point?? It doesnt mean you are right and I am wrong, and it doesnt make me right and you wrong… it means, simply, Now watch out — WE JUST DISAGREE!!
Anything more than that, and you are just flaming and baiting!!
A peer reviewed report depends on what kind of project you are working on Chas.
A peer review for Medical Science under goes different processes than one for Engineering Science and it is different for one that does Climate Science.
The biggest difference is that I can see with the peer review process for Climate Science as interpreted by the U.N. is that they have a closed board when it comes to signing off on each others reports.
Most peer reviewed science is open-ended and allows disputing opinions, evidence and etc.
For example, an engineer report for review wouldn’t reject a peer review from NAMA (an association that deals with vending machines) even though the report being reviewed is an electronic device that may or may not benefit the vending machine industry.
In the closed circle of Climate Science reviews as ran by the U.N., they don’t acknowledge and even discourage those with dissenting or differing views or evidence.
To me, that (U.N. Climate Science) is not peer review, it’s editorial science – which is not science at all.
My broker’s got me in overseas funds, thank heavens.
DNFTT!
Well JR I do drive a Prius. What do you drive? I have planted 7 trees this year. How many have you planted? I have switched most of my lights to low wattage lights. How many have you changed?I never cool my house below 75 or heat my house above 68. How about you?
I do my part for the environment. I just refuse to allow Algore to destroy the economy of a great nation and turn us into a third tier country because of a bunch of hysterical movie stars and UN ‘peer’ reviewed scientist who live like rich oil scheiks and tell us to live like paupers.
Hope you can understand what I am saying here. Cosmos and frankly Ben too go on and on about the same old tired data. Cranked out decades ago and call it gospel. Other very credible scientists refute their information and they are just dismissed out of hand because…???
Other very credible scientists refute their information and they are just dismissed out of hand because…???
They don’t have the “right” peers.
Rlf I guess you have identified the problem with my scientists.
Well, gee, I am SO sorry I asked a serious question, since all I see are snide comments about the concept of peer reviewed articles. I thought maybe there was a possibility of discussion on that one… Oh well!!
In the words of another: DNFTT!!
Ok Randy, the results of a large scale scientific study clearly shows Meat causes lung and cololectral Cancer. We need to get a ban on red and processed meat, or at least tax it to discourage consumption!http://health.yahoo.com/news/reuters/cancer_meat_dc.html
I never heat my house above 75 or cool my house below 68!
Phantom we would roast at your house and turn into icicles in the summer. Are you green?
If Ks was really a grm, she’d be worried about the world and debt we’re going to leave the children.
Phantom, That is precisely why I don’t want to ruin the economy of a great nation because Algore needed a release from his disappointment over not being elected to the prez.
When I hear very credible scientists saying what the Hollywood elite and a bitter politician are telling us is a fairy tale then, yes I do doubt that the truth is out.
We have some very vocal greens on this blog that never say anything to convince skeptics but are right there to point out dessenting scientists as ‘not credible’.
Forgive me if I don’t bite. The bait is getting rancid.
“I just refuse to allow Algore to destroy the economy of a great nation and turn us into a third tier country because of a bunch of hysterical movie stars and UN ‘peer’ reviewed scientist who live like rich oil scheiks and tell us to live like paupers.”
Ya know? I see this again and again.
The ONLY exceptions are Econ and the one or three others.
“Of course it is important to cut our use of fossil fuels and I am doing my part and I think we should do more.”
Or words to that effect always followed by a rant about how Al Gore wants to ruin the economy or make everyone live in teepees.
Thing is? I never see a source about how the economy is gonna be ruined. And I sure never get a source on how Al Gore wants to make anybody do anything.
Isn’t it enough to do the right thing and not care about why?
Reducing our use of fossil fuels could be an absolute economic boon. Instead we get China CHINA with more efficient cars than us.
If we learn to conserve. If we invent new technologies. What’s to lose?
It’s obvious to all but the hardest headed that global warming is occurring. It’s not as obvious that we are a part of it.
Don’t we best err on the side of caution?
OR you could keep listening to Rush who BRAGS about heating and airconditioning his garage.
Sorry you read the rude pundit’s blog, ksgrm. If I ever post a link to that site again, I will specifically advise you not to click on it.
If my grandmother were alive, I wouldn’t want her reading it. My grandmother was a Republican and from Minnesota – she was buried in Oklahoma; it always bothered her that she would have to rest in that red dirt – she lived there 70 years, but never considered it home.
The Capn cut and pasted the best part of the rude pundit’s blog (1:36 p.m.). Gun liberties kept us safe from problems gun liberties created – the irony was just too beautiful for me to pass up – hence my link.
It is possible to have a dialog with ksgrm, but it is a challenge when we share so little reality. I try to do it every once in a while to see if I can.
I will skip the “try” today.
Econ
Help me out here —- I thought the fed rate going down was supposed to be a good thing?
I often wonder other than being legal in all states how big a difference the stock market is from gambling —- the risk may be smaller but it still is very much a crap shoot …… ?
JR in the business world when the government no matter how well intentioned attempts to put unfunded mandates on companies it can only go one way. When companies lose money, stockholders lose money, consumers pay higher prices, inflation controls the economy and eventually we are in a bad way financially.
This is how a capitalistic society works. Companies won’t absorb the cost of the mandates, they will pass them along as increases in the cost of their product. Hence the larger taxes necessary for the increase in government controls (because all controls come with a need for more government workers) – more increases for the consumer. Are you seeing what I am talking about?
When you yoke this with what many scientists are saying about what is really causing GW and you will see what I am talking about in reverting to a ‘third world economy’.
Thank you Steven for trying as hard as it must be. I just didn’t think that link was up to your standards. I could have been wrong.
And why didn’t you take your grandma to the NE corner of Okla. We call it Gods country because the soil is black as night and will grow anything. My husband once grew a 45lb watermelon in our garden that was sweet as sugar. That old red dirt must have been down around Okla City.
IIRC a credible scientist and a peer reviewed scientist are two different categories… maybe different credentials… I know there is some difference… And it might be a technical difference for all I know… But I believe I remember that there is a difference.
Dear?
Just because this economy is working for you doesn’t mean it is roses and clover for everybody.
The management friendly culture is a lot of what is wrong with this country. That and the thoughtless consumption we have adds up to maybe there aint a whole lot of America left. Is that what you are defending against imaginary assault?
Being thoughtful in consumption and innovative in technology are GOOD things. Yeah they hurt a few entrenched industries.
No doubt when kerosene was discovered the whaling industry was not happy about it.
You are playing dupe for a club you imagine you have membership in. Why? Why hold back your country?
I guess you could say that if a scientist wasn’t credible then he would not get a good review from his peers.
JR Honey just because the economy isn’t good for you doesn’t mean there aren’t others that are doing fine. Look at the numbers of shoppers out in the malls. The amount of money spent on ‘black friday’ set new records.
We are going to get new blood in the housing market with lower interest rates. Look for another drop right after the first of the year.
Unemployment is still at record lows and job creation continues to set records.
Sorry you don’t respect business but I consider that your problem. These are the risk takers that take a chance with their own money in order to provide job and make some money in the process.
Thems the facts JR sorry if you don’t agree.
The things you fight for are not sustainable ksgrm. We can address it now or we can address it later.
THAT’s the facts. And I don’t think further discussion with you is productive. Just pat your grandkids on the head and tell them THEY’LL be alright.
ksgrm, it doesn’t matter what the economic indicators are!
We are going into a recession!
“How to avoid the Recession” talk is in the news everyday.
Why?
Because unemployment is low at what, 5%.
Economic growth in the 3rd Qtr was 4.5%.
92,000 more jobs were created in November.
Inflation is still around 3%.
The deficit is decreasing faster then expected.
The Iraq war is going better, even Murtha says so.
But we are going into a recession because the Democrats need an issue to knock out the Republicans in the next election.
And the press is all Democrat.
Well, gee, I am SO sorry I asked a serious question, since all I see are snide comments about the concept of peer reviewed articles. I thought maybe there was a possibility of discussion on that one… Oh well!!

…there was nothing snide about it.
I thought it gave my view on peer review quite distinctly and in succinct terms.
Max I didn’t want to aggrevate JR because he did call me dear. (It is just a good thing he said that to me and not Lindalink.) And he was kind to my grandkids telling me to pat them on the head. All by two are taller than I am now so that is hard to do.
When you mention economy to JR it becomes personal and he can only see his environmnet.
I wonder if the dems are not trying to ‘talk down the economy’ and the press is certainly complicit in this.
Kansas, Unfortunately, you committed an Unchasism. Do try to avoid that in the future.

ksgrm,The link was supposed to be funny. It is funny in a rare insightful kind of way. It uses bad language in the process. But besides that, I would say it was actually above my standards in terms of writing excellence.

Kansas, don’t you ever get tired of lying?
The IPCC reports are compilations of published, peer-reviewed climate science. The “References” section at the end of each chapter lists the papers.http://www.ipcc.ch/ipccreports/ar4-wg1.htm
The requirement to use published papers in the IPCC reports causes them to be out-of-date. They do not include recent, unpublished science.
And someone who “publishes”(sic) non-peer-reviewed theories does not belong in the IPCC reports.
“Cosmos and frankly Ben too go on and on about the same old tired data. Cranked out decades ago and call it gospel. Other very credible scientists refute their information and they are just dismissed out of hand because…???”

The “same old tired data”? The data and science of anthropogenic global warming is constantly updated, and becoming more solid.
The deniers are “dismissed out of hand”, because their theories are not supported by science and/or observations. It’s about the science, not the people.
Good Grief, the Always Right, Right Reich, Right Wing Nuts are attempting to take over the Blog again! This gets really old, when other people might like to take part in the Blog. New Peer-Reviewed Study Finds ‘Warming is naturally caused and shows no human influence’
By EPW Blog Monday, December 10, 2007
An inconvenient new peer-reviewed study published in the December 2007 issue of the International Journal of Climatology.
Climate warming is naturally caused and shows no human influence:
Climate scientists at the University of Rochester, the University of Alabama, and the University of Virginia report that observed patterns of temperature changes (‘fingerprints’) over the last thirty years are not in accord with what greenhouse models predict and can better be explained by natural factors, such as solar variability. Therefore, climate change is ‘unstoppable’ and cannot be affected or modified by controlling the emission of greenhouse gases, such as CO2, as is proposed in current legislation.
These results are in conflict with the conclusions of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and also with some recent research publications based on essentially the same data. However, they are supported by the results of the US-sponsored Climate Change Science Program (CCSP).
The report is published in the December 2007 issue of the International Journal of Climatology of the Royal Meteorological Society [DOI: 10.1002/joc.1651]. The authors are Prof. David H. Douglass (Univ. of Rochester), Prof. John R. Christy (Univ. of Alabama), Benjamin D. Pearson (graduate student), and Prof. S. Fred Singer (Univ. of Virginia).
The fundamental question is whether the observed warming is natural or anthropogenic (human-caused). Lead author David Douglass said: “The observed pattern of warming, comparing surface and atmospheric temperature trends, does not show the characteristic fingerprint associated with greenhouse warming. The inescapable conclusion is that the human contribution is not significant and that observed increases in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases make only a negligible contribution to climate warming.”
Co-author John Christy said: “Satellite data and independent balloon data agree that atmospheric warming trends do not exceed those of the surface. Greenhouse models, on the other hand, demand that atmospheric trend values be 2-3 times greater. We have good reason, therefore, to believe that current climate models greatly overestimate the effects of greenhouse gases. Satellite observations suggest that GH models ignore negative feedbacks, produced by clouds and by water vapor, that diminish the warming effects of carbon dioxide.”
Co-author S. Fred Singer said: “The current warming trend is simply part of a natural cycle of climate warming and cooling that has been seen in ice cores, deep-sea sediments, stalagmites, etc., and published in hundreds of papers in peer-reviewed journals. The mechanism for producing such cyclical climate changes is still under discussion; but they are most likely caused by variations in the solar wind and associated magnetic fields that affect the flux of cosmic rays incident on the earth’s atmosphere. In turn, such cosmic rays are believed to influence cloudiness and thereby control the amount of sunlight reaching the earth’s surface and thus the climate.” Our research demonstrates that the ongoing rise of atmospheric CO2 has only a minor influence on climate change. We must conclude, therefore, that attempts to control CO2 emissions are ineffective and pointless. – but very costly.

Mullen: Afghanistan isn’t top priority
By ROBERT BURNS, AP Military Writer 2 hours, 21 minutes ago
WASHINGTON – The U.S. military’s top officer acknowledged on Tuesday that for all the importance of preventing Afghanistan from again harboring al-Qaeda terrorists, Washington’s first priority is Iraq.
“In Afghanistan, we do what we can,” said Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. “In Iraq, we do what we must.”His statement, delivered with emphasis in a prepared opening statement to the House Armed Services Committee, prompted some Democrats to say it showed what they have argued for years: that the Bush administration has become so bogged down in Iraq that it cannot make more effort in Afghanistan.”I find it troubling that our ongoing commitment in Iraq prevents us from dedicating resources in Afghanistan beyond what is necessary to prevent setbacks, as opposed to what is required to realize success,” Rep. Ike Skelton, D-Mo., chairman of the committee, said after the hearing.Mullen, testifying with Defense Secretary Robert Gates on the effort to stabilize Afghanistan, said that war is “by design and necessity, an economy-of-force operation. There is no getting around that. Our main focus, militarily, in the region and in the world right now is rightly and firmly in Iraq.”The United States has about 166,000 troops in Iraq and about 25,000 in Afghanistan. Neither conflict shows signs of ending any time soon, although U.S. troop levels in Iraq are beginning to decline.
*****Recently I watched an interview with a reporter who reports from Afghanistan and is there four times a year. He is following the experiences of a unit of U.S. troops assigned there. He said that front line units are facing thirty assaults a day. Not just IED but actual armed attacks against their positions. I have said it before, we claim that Iraq is the front lines in the war on terrorism, But do the Terrorists know that? But wait, Bin Laden told us that Iraq was the front line for him too. It can’t be he was LYING that would be disinformation fed to his enemy! Gee, killing innocent people is one thing but lying? Man that would make him a really, really bad person.
In light of the new data showing red and processed meat cause lung cancer, will the projections from second hand smoke have to be adjusted.Shouldn’t consumers of meat help fund the SCHIPS?
I had to take out the url for the article and shorten it up a bit.Oddly I am not using my typepad account to post.
LOL Kev.
Yesterday here in SE VA, it was 79F when I left work at 5-ish. It was so hot at the YMCA that I just about bailed at minute 35 of a 40 minute funfest on the stairmaster. (I even managed to roll up my tongue when I was finished so I wouldn’t step all over it!)
Today it was a frigid 62 when I left Virginia Beach for home. I nearly had to unroll my sleeves to button them back up!
Tomorrow it’s supposed to hit 80 here, with mostly sunny conditions, lol.
Are you guys getting some weather back there in Wichita? ;>)
“”"Kev, I saw a few days ago that Atlanta has 4 mo.s water supply, what are their contingency plans?”"”
Our plans are to do nothing. Sort of like our traffic plan. Do nothing and pray to God that somehow it works itself out!
Just heard the Sunflower protestors were aquitted, good for them.

WOW! That is good news.
Restores the faith in the justice system that!
Well, all, lets hope it doesnt ice up too bad over night..
Good night; Good luck; and God bless; whatever you conceive God to be!!
Blessings all!!
MERRY XRMAS!!!
FYI
If you enjoy Boston Legal, they are handling a case where a guy is suing DoD because his State National Guard was in Iraq during a natural disaster, and he claims because of that he lost his home and property — may be a rerun — but they do have good writers and interesting plot points — on now
See http://www.wen2k.com/tell.php?Id=1771 and see Water Boarding. I hope this can be viewed and used too stop the Terror. I hope peole remember this can be used on American Soldiers by our enimies. Enough is enough!!! Herbert West III, Publisher/Journalist west.herb@yahoo.com
WTG Herb!! Good one!!
Oh Pedant :P Hush!
From what I understand, Wichita didn’t even get it as hard as we did. Power has been on here all day, but all over my area poles are crashing down and trees.
I don’t know about anyone else, but after watching the Obama/Oprah campaign thing, I was rather irritated. It felt as if I was being preached to. That’s the LAST thing I want.
I’m also more than irritated with Hillary Clinton after watching Sicko. So these are my two favorites, and now who do I vote for? Obama the minister, or Hillary the insurance agent?
That’s water boarding Herb?
That person must be a non swimmer to react like that, that quickly.
Just my opinion, but I was underwhelmed.
I’ll have to ask Hank if he has ever been in the escape training tank at Grautin Connecticut. Now that can be water torture. :)
Well PM, sometimes you get what you pay for.
I’m looking forward to whomever the other states decide will be your democrat for the white house.
I think it’s great that a black woman finally gets to endorse a black man for office – not on the quality of his experience, but on the color of his skin.
You’ve come a long way baby.
I don’t think it has anything to do with the color of his skin. I think it has everything to do with his beliefs on how to change the country, to move it forward.
One of the best presidents, Kennedy, had very little experience either. Of course, Kennedy was about to make some bad moves, but he was assassinated. Who knows what would have happened.
I’m sure sick about Hillary’s insurance company’s snuggly relationship lately.
My last was supposed to be under Kansas.
So, how about you volunteer to be waterboarded, Kansas, and then you can show us all how its done!!
11:24 pm post is not me.
Sure Chas, name the time and place with trained personnel.
Being in or around water, one should never panic.
I’ve swallowed water at a twenty foot depth – one has to keep their wits about them or you will drown. :)
Thanks Chas.To Kansas, I am not sure if a swimmer or non swimmer pertains. I acknowledge your view and opinion. A swimmer has a choice if the do or dont want to be under water. Try just lying upside down and try to breath in that position. Try to breath while struggling with others while bound laying upside down. Add water and a towel. This stays saturated with water. This cause a direct flow of water down the nose and throat. I know this because I used to be a Paramedic before I got a Liver Disorder. This position opens the airway. It reduces the gage reflex. It can cause avapor lock or a drydrowning. WE close off opur airway to protect our lungs. This is a reflex action. It is usually spontanious in cold water submergion. A wet drowning is when our gage reflex is not patent. Not all people who drown have water in their lungs. Eitherway, it is torture to Suficate anyone anytime. Oxygen Deprevation is ILLEGAL and water boarding is a form of Oxygen Deprevation. Rape is a form of questioning or interogation in some cultures. Breaking fingers and Bambooo under the fingernails is a form of questioning and interogation in some cultures. So is electric shock. So is caning and whipping. So is killing someone in a crowd and threatening the rest with the same unless they talk. Pushing someone under water in a tub and lifting them back up while bound is done in some cultures. All these are Terroristic and Torture. They all need to be monitored and stopped. Saddam Hussein was hung for doing these things. We are allowed?? Why, its us instead of him?? We are Human. We can not do these things just because it is us instead of them. That is dangerous and wrong. Thanks and God Bless. Herbert West III, Publisher/Journalist P.S. To: Chas, thanks again and To: Kansas, please read with an open mind.
So these are my two favorites, and now who do I vote for? Obama the minister, or Hillary the insurance agent?
How dare you insult us Political Mom! We are a respected and nationally recognized Independent Insurance Agents of America (IAA).. We are known nationally and have standards of conduct and required prerequisites for business operations.
To compare us with a political candidate of such low standings as (I don’t want to even dignify her by mentioning her name) as a Clinton – you have done our profession a grave misservice.
Do your homework! You will see we are respectable and do our services for MILLIONS of Americans.
Maybe you meant to say “lawyers” or maybe “used car dealers”.
But certainly NOT IIA of America.
Don’t get me wrong Mr. West, I don’t condone it and it shouldn’t be done.
It just appeared to me that the fellow panicked somewhat quickly.
Anyone who has high dived, will tell you that you can get a snoot full of water rather quickly and the next moment you are down 12 feet underwater before you can surface.
It’s a reason why some swimmer/divers wear nose plugs. Most don’t because they’ve learned to cope with it.
However, as I said before, I don’t condone it, but from the movie I wasn’t really impressed.
Awwww now who would WANT to post under your Nic, Kansas?? Not ME for darn sure…
IMHO, I dont think you would last any longer on waterboarding than the guy in the video… He was trained as well… It is pure and simple torture… So, Please stop trying to defend it?? It makes you look, well, non-human!!
If it is classified as torture Chas, I don’t condone it.
I’m just saying I wasn’t impressed from the video.
don’t think it has anything to do with the color of his skin. I think it has everything to do with his beliefs on how to change the country, to move it forward.
One of the best presidents, Kennedy, had very little experience either.
Well Political Mom, I am afraid this is my last post to you.
Anyone silly enough to hold JFK as one of our best presidents is certainly lacking in moral character and possibly intelligence. JFK screwed over our nation in Vietnam, the military in the Bay of Pigs – which nearly resulted in nuclear annihilation, and enjoyed more sex outside of his bedroom than any other president. Marilyn Monroe, who posed NUDE was a victim of JFK. THere are many who confessed and admitted relationships sexually with the pervert. Even while his wife was in the hospital after loosing a baby.
Some hero and example! Thank God he was shot. His brother killed another woman in his drunken stupor as a Kennedy sex addict. Get real and forget the plastic image associated with his fame. His fame is ONLY because he was shot. His leadership was more republican than democrat. And he liked war! Hell no. We won’t go.
Additionally, I have taken the time of listening to every word of Oprah’s speeches. Not once did she provide facts or reasons for supporting Obama. She supports him soley because of the color of his skin. She never supported any other. There is nothing special for her – other than promoting another black as President. Do you want quotes? Or are you at least smart enough to go to YOU TUBE and listening?
So these are my two favorites, and now who do I vote for? Politcal Mom.
If ever America needed an example of the sheep, Political Mom takes the cake.
1. She has been told who her favorites will be and understands that.
2. She is waiting for the koolaid tape to tell her who to vote for.
I am so thankful to Gawd I am not one of her lost and begotten children. It is amazing that American still allows people with her gene pool to breed.
AmWay — Why does your post sound almost totally like a Racist Rant?? Have we learned nothing in this life time about Racism?? We simply cant have such a thing in our time!!
“In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including Al Qaeda members, though there is apparently no evidence of his involvement in the terrible events of September 11, 2001. It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons. Should he succeed in that endeavor, he could alter the political and security landscape of the Middle East, which as we know all too well affects American security.” — Hillary Clinton, October 10, 2002 ——-
“As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, I am keenly aware that the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons is an issue of grave importance to all nations. Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process.” — Nancy Pelosi, December 16, 1998

Clinton lied, people yawnedBy OnTheWeb: Bruce Walker Tuesday, December 11, 2007
Bill Clinton is alive and well in his familiar persona as a pathological liar. Bill goes to Iowa and tells a group of Democrats that even if Hillary was not his wife, he would be there to campaign for her to be president – which is to say, he looked Iowans dead in the eye and lied to them. Bill maintains that he always opposed the Iraq War – which is to say, he pretends historical records do not exist, so he lies to us. Bill informs us that he wants his presidential archives released, but that somehow “George Bush” is at fault – which is to say, Bill lies again.
When Bill Clinton lies, his mendacity is not nuanced or weighted anymore. He tells us whoppers. He talks to us like a five year old boy talks to prying parents. He speaks as if he expects people to believe him, even when any sane person would know that he was lying.
Hillary is much the same. She who would be president lies without the slightest notice. During her marriage to Bill, Hillary has become so immersed in lying in every form – infidelity, political lies, and personal lies – that it has become second nature to her as well. Two lawyers who have sold their souls to political expediency in a faithless marriage represent the quintessence of dishonesty.
So one might expect bumper stickers proclaiming “Clinton lied, people died.” But, of course, nothing of the sort has happened. When Bill Clinton was caught lying about his non-sexual sex with Monica Lewinsky (about the time he asked under oath what the definition of “is” is), the nation faced a serious threat from al-Qaida. This time, because he needed a massive distraction from Monica, Clinton sent cruise missiles into an aspirin factory in Sudan. The very real danger of bin Ladin and al-Qaida, which would three years later plunge the world into a fifth world war, was drowned in the lies and shiftiness of the most dishonest president in American history.
Clinton lied, and people have been dying around the world ever since. Our chance to capture bin Ladin, the opportunity to build a bipartisan coalition against Islamic terrorism, the hope of avoiding a war that will not end in our lifetime – all these openings to a safer, better future for the world were sacrificed upon the altar of the Clintons’ private ambition. But make no mistake: Clinton lied and people have died.
Yet the bumper sticker that should have indicted our former president and his wife became, instead, the risible “Bush lied, people died.” Why? Although Bush-haters are loath to ever admit it, there is a Bush bumper sticker because we expect moral perfection from President Bush. To a remarkable degree, we get that moral perfection from President Bush. Consider, as a signal example, that despite unimaginable pressure and merciless abuse, the former alcoholic George Bush has not hit the bottle. Does anyone, except Mrs. Bush, know just what sort of moral fiber our president has to stay sober during these long years of hatred and madness?
Whatever one thinks of his policies, President Bush has incredible moral fortitude drawn from faith in God and a good marriage.
We expect President Bush to be completely honest always about everything, which is to say that we expect the same extraordinary ethical power that America had with President Washington, President Reagan and President Theodore Roosevelt. We have set a very high standard for an imperfect leader who often makes mistakes. We wrongly attribute his policy failures to moral failures.
That is not something that we do with Bill Clinton or Hillary Clinton. We recast their phoniness into cleverness, their vanity into ability, their ruthlessness into courage, and their ambition into wisdom. In our hearts, we expect the Clintons to be crass, bullying liars. So, while it is perfectly thinkable to have a bumper sticker that proclaims “Bush lied, people died,” it is perfectly unthinkable to have a bumper sticker that states the truism “Clinton lied, people died.” No, because all of us know when Bill or Hillary are lying (it is when their lips are moving.) The only bumper sticker that makes sense of the hypnotic spell that Bill and Hillary have cast upon the American people would be this: Clinton lied, people yawned.

PLEASE read this article, and then explain to any reasonable person how such a man could have possibly had all of the sexual exploits attributed to JFK???
The health situation of JFK was horrendous, to put it mildly!! This article shows just how bad it was!! It is amazing he could walk, let alone be POTUS!!
But, AmWay, he did NOT need to be killed… THAT, is UnAmerican!
Jose too bad this was written so late at night. It needed to be said and needs to be read by many here who will miss it tomorrow.
Jose, that has to be the WORST piece of Reich Wing Spin I have seen in quite some time… even here on the WE Blog!! And there have been many!! Most of what you post here is speculation, and flat out would be fantasy, about private lives which you know nothing about!!
For example, how do you know that Bill and Hillary dont love each other??
How do you KNOW Bush isnt hitting the bottle?? He sure doesnt talk as plainly as he did when he was first elected!! Could be the booze talking… or, maybe some other health problem… like, a stroke, or maybe alzheimers setting in???
But that would be speculation as well… And that wouldnt be right to do that…
Fact is we dont know… NONE of us knows what goes on in the private lives of these people, and that is pretty much as it should be!!
Where you get this stuff, I can only guess… But it is mostly all wild, fantasy, and speculation!!
Looks like the sock puppet ballet was in full bloom last night.
Pmom?
“So these are my two favorites, and now who do I vote for? Obama the minister, or Hillary the insurance agent?”
Vote for Dennis. He’s only unelectable as long as WE SAY he’s unelectable.
