Of course Huckabee ad was about politics

HuckabeepointrightBoth sides are likely partly correct in a debate about GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee’s Christmas campaign advertisement. In the TV spot, Huckabee says: “Are you about worn out by all the television commercials you’ve been seeing, mostly about politics? Well, I don’t blame you. At this time of year sometimes it’s nice to pull aside from all of that and just remember that what really matters is the celebration of the birth of Christ and being with our family and friends.”
Some have complained that Huckabee is going too far mixing faith and politics, to which Huckabee responded: “If we are so politically correct in this country that a person can’t say, ‘Enough of the nonsense with the political attack ads, could we pause for a few days and say Merry Christmas to each other?’ then we’re really, really in trouble as a country.”
Yes, we should be able to say “Merry Christmas” to one another. But few are naive enough to believe that the campaign ad wasn’t about politics and Huckabee’s ongoing efforts to appeal to conservative Christian voters.

    Crapn,

I still can’t find that prayer you were alluding to earlier. I found a Christmas ad in which Huck had the contemptible temerity to actually use the word “Christ” in a reverent tone (how fascist), and to very offensively say, “Merry Christmas,” — but I can’t find that prayer you referred to. Perhaps you could help me out, since you were directly referencing a prohibition about hypocritically doing religious or good deeds in front of people in order to receive praise from them.

Now, what was that you were blogging about going off to help some poor children with Christmas gifts? (I’m off to spend the afternoon wrapping presents for poor kids in the “Caring and Sharing” program.Posted by: CapnAmerica | December 19, 2007 at 12:46 PM )

The hypocrites publicly performing their “good deeds” never acknowledged their real motivation for doing so. In fact, they were probably blind to their motivation. It was Jesus who judged their motivation, declaring them hypocrites and saying imperatively, “when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you.” Or perhpas you prefer, “when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret.” The prohibition was that we weren’t to make these thing public. Those that do were judged by Jesus to be hypocrites.

But then, as a “minister,” you already know that, don’t you? (Or do you?)

That’s not at all what you said. You were trying to parse motives. Jesus alreeady judged motives (without your help, I might add) and imperatively instructed ACTIONS and BEHAVIOR. Something which you have completely (and typically) ignored. The original issue, which you have Chasistically obfuscated, was that

    1. Crapn asserted Huck prayed. He did not, which means Crapn falsely accused Huck. That was exposed.2. Crapn asserted that the non-existent prayer violated a Biblical command. However, since there was no prayer, there was no violation.3. Crapn tried to paint Huck as a hypocrite for said alledged violations.

What I pointed out was both the inaccuracy of Crapn’s allegations, and his own hypocrisy, which is blatant. You have tried to defend it by your standard deconstruction of the Scripture. And now we can be fairly sure that everyone sees that, too.

    Poster C.,

After all that time, work and effort, you still somehow managed to miss the point… In this case specific instructions are clearly given about what we are to do and not to do. Jesus judged the motives behind the actions. You want to dwell on what Jesus already settled and re-judge why someone would or wouldn’t do something. As has been posted all the through this discussion, it was the specific actions that demonstrated the hypocrisy. In the initial post by Crapn, he accused Huck of of specific actions which would have indicated hypocrisy. But the accusation did not occur. Immediately thereafter, Crapn actually DID what he accused Huck of doing, and violated the imperative he was citing against Huck. Jesus gave concrete instructions. Huck did not violate them. Crapn did. It was all very public and obvious, as several pointed out. Why is that hard for you to grasp? No one else is having any problem understanding that. I’m not spending any more time on this. If you can’t get it now, you can’t get it.

    . . . that’s “talking about him.”

    not “talking to us.”

    Edit is my friend . . .

So . . . is the trick to the “comment spam” bot to write in short, meaningless text bites? To avoid any lengthy, meaningful exchange?

Is the goal to squeeze all the life and substance out of this blog?

The Ad is reminiscent of a Sunday Morning Talkling Head Preacher Show..

It just doesnt end with: “Tune in next Sunday for an inspiring message on the important theme of “___________”"

GMC, I think somebody has done something with the “spam” settings on the Blog Bot… I dont think it has much to do with length, as it does certain “words” and “phrases” that it picks up.

    It is offensive.

    The bot I mean.

    But Hickabee is too.

If I saw this among the Dem nominees I would say so as well.

Is this the Hucksters ‘mission accomplished’ banner in the back ground?

  81. Posted December 19, 2007 at 11:18 pm | Permalink

Well, they all say how Obama has no foreign policy experience, or experience managing a major budget like the Fed budget; or any thing else…

SO — What does a career as a SBC pastor, and a term as Governor of Arkansas do to make Huckabee capable of handling the affairs of State required by the President?? I mean, at least G. W. Bush had the example of his Father’s presidency, and vice-presidency to use as models… even if he didnt do much on that one…

Those who want to complain about a Bush/Clinton Dynasty, there isnt much of “clinton” in that dynasty… Bush 20 years… Clinton 8 years… Remember Bush 41 was VP for 8 years before he was President…

  82. Posted December 19, 2007 at 11:21 pm | Permalink

In a way, Phantom, you could say that… with accuracy…

There is really nothing WRONG with the Ad… I just question the use of it at this particular point in time… Seems more like an Ad he might want to run IF he was elected President, and then run this one at his FIRST Christmas in the White House..??

At least the Clinton dynasty doesn’t involve the same gene pool, like the bush’s did. The nut didn’t fall far from the bush.

You’re right, Phantom… I was also thinking that Huckabee doesnt even have the “international” experiences of Bill Richardson, or Obama, or even Hillary!! Unless you count his activities in raising funds for World Mission Outreach, like any other clergy of any denomination… I just dont see how he could be persuasive on the world stage, and barely on the domestic front!! Except for folks relating to his particular “faith-based” urges.

Just look at the time of posts from Kansas and you’ll see that whatever he’s “doing for his church” can’t be much.

Sorry I wasn’t around yesterday to defend myself from the reich-wing ridiculing my charity work.

    I was . . . uh . . . doing charity work.

    Matthew 5: 11-12

“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.

“Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

I love reading chapter and verse back to the religious fundos, a liberal who knows the scriptures better than they do . . . drives ‘em nuts.

    CapnAmerica,

Only you and Chas are under some delusion that you know the scripture better than the “fundies” as you claim.

You are one of the biggest trouble makers here, rude, beligerent and then you go around acting all pious when it comes to the Christian threads.

Why is it that both Chas and you, who claim to be such great church going Christians, are the first ones to jump on someone like Huckabee who has spent a great deal of his life devoted to Christ and sharing his message?

    Huckabee:

He looks like a moderate, charms like a moderate & talks like a conservative.

Translation — votes, votes and more votes!

It’s pretty obvious he scares the bejeebers out of liberals & liberal mouthpieces like Phillip Brownlee.

    Go get ‘em, Mike!
