House stands up for Christmas

Congress
Rep. Todd Tiahrt, R-Goddard, was among the 60 co-sponsors of a House resolution recognizing the “international religious and historical importance of Christmas and the Christian faith” and supporting “the role played by Christians and Christianity in the founding of the United States and in the formation of the western civilization,” among other points. When the resolution passed 372-9 Tuesday evening, it had lost some of its Christian-centric language, but Tiahrt was joined by the other three members of the Kansas delegation in the “yea” column. Even the first Muslim elected to Congress, Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., voted for it.

    Wow. Great use of their time. (Heavy sarcasm.)

    Now, how about a resolution recognizing the contribution of rich, white men to the development of America?

    We’re fighting a never-ending, needless war in Iraq, and Tiahrtless et al. are breaking their arms patting themselves on the back for being . . . Christian.

    Why don’t they just pray on the street corner while they’re at it?

    How about passing the 12 Federal Budgets that were due on 10/1/07?

    The Lib Dem Majority Congress is gonna claim Republican obstructionism as an excuse for not passing the Federal Budgets, but then they waste their time on endless meaningless resolutions like this one.

    Priorities messed-up?

    One Republican House lawmaker is taking offense at nine Democrats for what he said should have been a no-brainer: recognizing the importance of Christians and Christmas.

    In the end, the House on Tuesday supported Rep. Steve King’s resolution to recognize “the Christian faith as one of the great religions of the world” and acknowledge “the international religious and historical importance of Christmas and the Christian faith.”http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,316574,00.html

    Some of the text from the Bill:

    ” Resolved, That the House of Representatives–

    (1) recognizes the Christian faith as one of the great religions of the world;

    (2) expresses continued support for Christians in the United States and worldwide;

    (3) acknowledges the international religious and historical importance of Christmas and the Christian faith;

    (4) acknowledges and supports the role played by Christians and Christianity in the founding of the United States and in the formation of the western civilization;

    (5) rejects bigotry and persecution directed against Christians, both in the United States and worldwide; and

    (6) expresses its deepest respect to American Christians and Christians throughout the world.”

    Gee, I wonder if this will affect the blank check we keep writing Israel every year.

    It’s government discriminates against the indigenous Christians there just like it does the Muslims.

    But I guess whacko “end times” fundamentalism trumps actually helping fellow Christians . . .

    Max – no, I’m not saying that. More likely the Democrats allowed him to do it so he would get it out of the way. With a narrow majority the Democrats understand that it is more fruitful to at least attempt to work with the other side.

    Max you putting a dig in about the liberals not passing a budget in a thread that starts out about a Republican being proud of passing a waste of time, totally pointless resolution. That only serves to throw a bone to the unwashed masses. Is somewhat as meaningless as the resolution.
    But of course every time I am watching Cspan and see them passing some basically meaningless resolutions it makes my blood boil. Its like the house is burning and they rush in to the table and instead of grabbing the phone from the table to call the fire department. They grab the photo of Elvis beside it,they seem to care so little about the country. Damn both parties!

    Reported yesterday: A Muslim father, along with his 26 year old son, were charged for strangling his 16 yr. old daughter to death because she took off her head scarf when she went to high school. One group of Islamic supporters called it and “Honour Killing”, another a “Culture Clash”. A group calling themselves “Young Muslims” discussed curbing violence in the home. None of them called it murder, but clamed it unfortunate and a loss. I’m not talking Iraq, Afganistan or Saudi Arabia, but a middle class Toronto suburb! I thought this only happened in the middle East. The Christian positive posts prompts my post.

    Northern, that is actually a discussion within the Moslem faith, beliefs verses culture. The faith it is argued does not support such actions against women, at least no more then the basic fundamental Christian believe of “the woman shall be subservient to the man”. But it is the culture that reads into that the justification for the abuse of women. So when a family moves to a different culture there is this conflict between their old culture and the new one. The kids adapt to the new and the parents hold onto the old.

    “Speaking with FOX News Wednesday, King said he was motivated to push the resolution because of liberal activists and “secularists in the country who are trying to eradicate Christ from Christmas.”

    “It’s time we stood up and said so and said to the rest of America, ‘Be who you are, and be confident, and let’s worship Christ and celebrate Christmas for the right reasons’,” he said.”

    Gee, glad he assumes that everyone worships Christ. And Christmas isn’t Christ’s birthday, it’s a secular holiday and we’re taking it back.

    I don’t like the wording of a lot of the bill, like the America is a Christian nation part. That’s so wrong, it’s surely to be ruled unconstitutional.

    It’s so amazing how you don’t mind it when congress spends their time on adding protection for the homosexuals in the hate crime bill but you have go ballistic when they spend some time supporting our countries’ faith, Christianity. You don’t mind it when they are against Christians when they yell “separation of church and state” when referring to teaching Evolution or praying in our schools, but have them support the Christians for one thing and you are just beside yourselves. By the way, “separation of church and state” referred to keeping government out of our religion, not religion out of our government. I am glad that they passed this resolution recognizing the importance of Christmas and our Christian faith. You might even be glad one day; it just may protect you from the other religions that really do force you to accept their faith and worship their god. Here in America, you are free to choose for yourself. God gave each of us the freedom to choose to worhsip him or not; therefore, as Christians we also do the same thing. We can share our faith and our experience but there is no way we can force someone to worship our God. That is between them and God.

    Sorry Chris’s wife……………”Seperation of Church and State” DOES go both ways. YOU need to learn to DEAL with that. This is NOT a christian nation, never has been, never will be. Worship whomever or whatever you want.

    Yes, you can be forced to worship. In one way or another.

    Just who is King referring to? What liberal activists and secularists are trying to rid this country of Christmas? Even non-Christians are happy to celebrate the holiday and the season.

    Just how Christian is having a nativity scene with Santa watching over the manger? Puleeease.

    The ones ruining Christmas are the companies who will do anything to take our money for Christmas presents. They titter with glee when they hear the news of mothers whacking each other over the head for a toy for their children.

    Why can’t Congress do congressional things? Why must they waste OUR money on frivolous and unnecessary resolutions?

    Your hard earned money at work, folks. Think about it.

  30. Posted December 12, 2007 at 11:01 pm | Permalink

    Thank goodness the Congress has solved the problems of the energy bill, the quagmire in Iraq, the corruption investigations and fully funded the SCHIP bill to take time out to recognize that the Christian oppressed majority that controls the U.S. government is really, really neat and Christmas is a swell holiday.

    As we can see this is about as meaningful a piece of legislation Tiahrt can manage. I wonder how much taxpayer money was wasted by these fiscal conservatives to deal with the most pressing issue of the day of reminding us that American Christians have a persecution complex.

    Next important legislation

    ” Resolved, That the House of Representatives–

    (1) recognizes that fuzzy bunnies are cute(2) expresses continued support for fuzzy bunnies in the United States and worldwide;

    (3) acknowledges the international importance of fuzzy bunnies, because they’re so cute

    (4) acknowledges and supports the role played by rabbits in Western culture, including Bugs Bunny(5) rejects attempts by bigots to denigrate fuzzy bunnies, unless they’re being hunted for dinner

  32. Posted December 13, 2007 at 2:11 am | Permalink

    The resolution was NOT a waste of time. Nor was it harmless.

    To see that, simply substitute the name of any religion you don’t like (say, Satanism, or scientology), and see if it still seems so innocuous. This is an open endorsement of a faith tradition by the U.S. Congress. You can’t get a much more literal violation of the First Amendment than that.

    It also shows what total cowards Beltway politicians really are. The purpose of this resolution, clearly, was to put liberal pols in the position of appearing to bash Christianity if they voted no. The campaign ads were no doubt already scripted.

    So they voted for it. Cowardice 1, Religious freedom 0. Or perhaps out of a more insidious view: that government endorsing religion is fine, so long it’s a religion *I* respect!

    Yeah, I know: the practical consequences seem nonexistent. But it’s just another propaganda tool for the enemies of religious freedom to use, along the “in God we trust,” the pledge, yada yada yada.

    It seems taking an intelligent, principled stand on the First Amendment is a losing proposition.

    My father was a man of the cloth right up to his passing. What I admired about this man was his ability to see through those who wore their religion on their sleeve! Those that did were the very ones you dared not turn your back on! As the years wore on I began to see what Dad was talking about! Now, I tire of hearing those who espouse Christianity as if it is the end all to save all. I don’t need someone to constantly tell me about Christianity! I was born under Christianity so no one can tell me anything about it. NO ONE! When a Bible-thumper begins his or her line about how they have found Jesus I just turn and walk away! I don’t need it and won’t listen to some ‘Do-gooder’ professing they are born again! Good for them! Now go away! You’re bother’n me!!!
