“This is one of the most arrogant, incompetent administrations I’ve ever seen personally or ever read about,†Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., told the Council on Foreign Relations last week. Hagel, who said he would be open to serving in a Democratic administration, possibly even as a vice president, also said that the Bush administration was as unprepared as any he has seen. “I would rate this one the lowest in capacity, in capability, in policy, in consensus — almost every area, I would give it the lowest grade.â€

IRS: 38 MILLION TAX REFUNDS COULD BE DELAYED
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,314506,00.html
The Liberal Socialist Democrat Congress has FAILED to act to fix the Alternative Minimum Tax problem.
Bush has repeated warned Congress that delays in fixing the Alternative Minimum Tax will result in delays in tax refunds from the IRS.
And if the Democrats continue to DO NOTHING, 25 million Americans will pay the Alternative Minimum Tax for 2006. That’s 6 times more then the 4 million who paid the Alternative Minimum Tax for 2005.
AND, the Democrats have not passed the 12 budgets that were due 10/1/2007, TWO MONTHS AGO!
And Hagel calls Bush incompetent?!?
Dems can’t do a thing when the repbublicans refuse to give an inch. I love how conservatives blame dems for their own actions.
“The White House and Republicans, protesting tax increases in the bill affecting mainly investment fund managers, maintained that it would never become law”
The dems are right to not give in to the republicans. Dude you gotta stop watching Faux News if you want the real story!http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/11/09/congress.taxes.ap/
How come republicans are just now realizing Bush is incompetent and just evil? We knew that all along.Hagel has always been fairly moderate, but too little, too late.
The moderate republicans should have come out against him long ago.
Many did mom, but their voices were drowned out by the cheering for the blood lust.
I have said it before, in the beginning this nation was so blinded by our blood lust that many whom spoke out were ignored and even called cowards, appeasers and unpatriotic.Patrick J. Buchanan whom few would ever label as a “moderate” spoke out against the invasion. The list is larger then you think, but like Buchanan did you ever hear about their descent until the cheering had stopped? Hegel and Paul have been speaking out all along, the media whether with intent or failing to notice has by pass them. The banner headlines have carried more about Democrats who have sided with Bush&Co. then Republicans who have stood up.
Yeah but Pat is so far out there loony that nobody listens to him. Perhaps if he had even an iota of credibility, but he doesn’t. And he doesn’t deserve any either.
I agree with Hagel. So why does he still have an “R” next to his name?? Can’t he see that is not going anywhere for him? Why not change that “R” to a “D” and become part of the future instead of being in the dust bin of the past?

For the vast majority of people in this country the AMT is not yet a problem. It generally hits those that make over $200,000 a year and most of those folks are undertaxed anyway. It does need to be fixed before it reaches downward anymore but it is not yet to a priority point.
And of course, “Kev” –
All that’s needed is to up the parameters of the AMT to account for George WMD Bush’s inflation.
No big deal
Nice. Nice to hear a politician speak his mind. Just get sick and tired-fed up and mad as hell. We do need more such as Hagel.
Yup, “thinkfirst” –
For the past seven years Republic Party advocates have secretly known George WMD Bush is an idiot. But he was *their* idiot, so they lived with it.
You see it in the GOP debates. No candidate is willing to stand up for the incumbent GOP administration.
Monkeyhawk I watch the GOP debate again last night, there were few actually standing up for much of anything! I had to laugh at Hockabee’s attempt at being “more Republican” to the question of a manned mission to Mar. Got to figure out how to throw Hillary’s name in there somewhere!but for the most part there seemed little substance. I heard a saying, “it is better to remain silence and appear to be stupid then to open your mouth and leave no doubt”. Most of them should have taken that advise at the debate. They were even doing a lousy job of beating up on Hillary! Damn writer’s strike!
The soul-less among Republicans are abandoning politics. Well first hand politics anyway. They are jumping ship to stay at the teat of corpocracy.
More sensible Republicans KNOW that they must distance themselves from this darker chapter in American history.
I know, $75,000 in income for 2 working spouses seems like “rich people” to a lot of the posters here.
Well there may be 25 Million people in this “rich people” category in 2007.
And we’re not talking $200,000 and above, the correct figure is $75,000.
Wanta complain about delays in your tax refund next spring? Blame the Liberal Socialist Democrat Majority Congress.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,314506,00.html
Congress’ Joint Committee on Taxation estimates that, without a fix, about half of taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes in the $75,000-$100,000 range will be affected by the AMT this year.
The alternative minimum tax was passed in 1969 and was aimed at about 155 very wealthy families who used deductions to avoid paying any federal income tax. The AMT disallows certain deductions and credits. It was not adjusted for inflation; as a result, over the years it has hit a growing number of middle-income taxpayers.
More than 4 million were subject to it in the 2006 tax year, and that could soar to 25 million this year without congressional action.
And so, “Max” –
The Republic Party’s response is to repeal, rather than adjust, the AMT?
How strange.
Just remove some of the more practical deductions and credits from the amt computation, problem solved.
Republicans continue to say bad things about Democrats. Democrats continue to say bad things about Republicans. They’re both raight! We desperately need a third party!!!
Just remove some of the more practical deductions and credits from the amt computation, problem solved.

Correct Phantom. If it’s so easy, why can’t the Majority Democrat Congress get this done?
It’s easy to eliminate the AMT or change the income levels. Dems can’t get either change done.
The Democrats have expressed a desire to adjust AMT as Bush claims he wants. However, they recognize the need to pay for it; Bush prefers to just say “charge it” like the borrow-and-spend Repukes do with everything else.
Max – you are absolutely correct. The Democrats cannot force Bush to sign AMT adjustment into law. They also cannot force obstructionist Repuke Senators from blocking legislation.
Oh Ben, did the Dems pass legislation to fix the AMT and this was vetoed by Bush?
No Max- they are attempting good faith negotiations. Especially since they cannot pass legislation with the obstructionst Repukes in the Senate.
Ok, the answer is NO.
The Democrats haven’t passed a bill fixing the AMT problem.
You can’t blame Bush then.
I blame the obstructionist Repukes in the Senate.
Hagel isnt going to be around to do much of anything. He isnt running cause he already saw the writing on the wall. He couldnt be reelected for any post in Nebraska….so move on to something that fits him….which is apparently the Democrats.
They can’t get the votes unless they play up to the wealthy and give them more.
“”" know, $75,000 in income for 2 working spouses seems like “rich people” to a lot of the posters here.

That is funny because me and my wife make more than $75K and the AMT has not shown up on our taxes yet.
I’m with you kev. i may have to run some ’scenarios’ under the 2007 tax year forms – however we still are not sure what the rules will be.
It’s not just the 75K figure; it’s also vatious ‘tax preferences’ items. The 6251 is a fairly complicated form; i cannot see most taxpayers successfully navigating it without software.
If you’re not taking the tax breaks, you wouldn’t be subject to the amt tax anyway. Here’s the big hold up on getting the tax bill passed:”But, honoring their pledge not to pass legislation that adds to the federal deficit, Democrats voted to increase taxes by $80 billion in other areas, including for investment fund managers. Tax-adverse Republicans voted unanimously against the bill and Bush said he would veto any bill that included a tax increase.
“You can see from the above congress isn’t concerned with the average american taxpayer who may have to pay the amt, they’re wanting to protect the big fish, and Max is too dumb to realize he isn’t in the Republican protected class
Yup, Dem approach to cutting the AMT tax – raise other taxes.
Smooth move Dems.
Try cutting spending, just once.
What good is it to have a Dem Majority in Congress if they can’t get anything done.
They can’t even pass the 12 fiscal budgets that were do 10/1/07. 2+ months now – and counting….
Tax cut and spend, just doesn’t get it with the new sheriffs in town!
Budgets?? How the hell are we ever gonna pay for this WAR??
This thread got hijacked to the non-problem of AMT’s.
The real problem is that a fish rots from the head down.
And that rotten stinking fish head is GW Bush.
This thread wasn’t hijacked Capn.
The incompetence of Congress is very relevent when you have a Congressman calling Bush incompetent.
And if you think the AMT is not relevent, you don’t make much money and/or you didn’t read the news about the 25 MILLION people the IRS estimates will be effected by the AMT in 2007.
That’s up 625% from the 4 MILLION people who paid the AMT in 2006.
It seems to me that the problem with the budget is in the Senate; IIRC, the House passed all budget bills before Labor Day (if not sooner).
On the AMT; it needs to be indexed for inflation.
