The three months that former Kansas Rep. Jim Slattery took deciding not to challenge Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., in 2008 ate up precious fundraising time for any other viable Democratic candidate — not that many such people come to mind, especially considering Roberts’ $2 million in campaign cash. It also was fair to wonder how viable Slattery was: After all, his exit from Kansas politics came in a landslide loss to Bill Graves in the 1994 gubernatorial election (64 to 36 percent). Kansans’ failure to have sent a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since the 1930s only compounded the challenge.
According to the Kansas City Star’s Prime Buzz blog, the Democratic challenger will be Johnson County businessman Greg Orman.

Greg Orman may have been a Republican from Leawood in 2002 or so, but has been AWOL from voting in Kansas in recent years. Orman only registered in Olathe in July 2007 as an independent voter. It’s not clear if he’s even a registered Democrat yet. It’s not clear where he was registered to vote before July 2007.
But, Orman does like to give money to Democrats from either an Olathe address, or an Orlando, FL address: $4600 to Hillary Clinton, $2300 to Bill Richardson, $500 to Al Franken, and $1000 to Tom Harkin, and $1000 to Harry Reid. But from 1998 to 2001 Orman gave to the National Republican Congressional Committee.
Does KDEH’s Bremby need to “approve” this candidate since he had ties to coal power plants?
Cool. Another former Republican driven from his party by the radical wing-nuts.
Hell, yes, we’ll take him, and good on you, son.
Old Rubberstamp may have a lot of money in the bank. But so does Hillary, and who’s coming on strong is Edwards with the least money of all of them.
Except for the 2000 election, the person with the most votes still wins.
One wonders if Old Rubberstamp will be able to disengage his lips from Bush’s boots quickly enough to get re-elected.
Little Jimmy Ryun couldn’t. And he had money too . . .
“AWOL?”
It’s up to Meadlowlark to decide when someone can leave or enter the state now?
I’ll be sure to check in with him every time I cross a state line. God forbid I do so without his permission.
Good effin’ grief.
PS: Meadowlark’s commets on people being “AWOL” are particularly ironic given his partisan defense of his hero Kline lying about HIS residence.
Oh, and three technical notes about Meadowlark’s post here and on other blogs around the state.
1. There is no “Independent” party in Kansas. The Kansas Secretary of State permits the following registrations:
RepublicanDemocratReformLibertarian
Anyone not wishing to join a party is listed as “Unaffiliated.” The “Independent Party” is something very different from being “unaffiliated.”
2. The state voter registration database shows the last date any change was made to your voter registration, and nothing more. If someone changes parties, for instance, their registration date is the date of that change, not the date they moved into or out of state. Example: I’m shown to be registered only since April 6, 2005, which is the day I switched from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party.
3. Meadowlark’s analysis of Orman’s voting history is flawed. If a voter moves out of state, or is otherwise purged from the system, their voting history in Kansas is deleted from the state voter file. Unless Meadowlark has access to older versions of the state file, he has no way to analyzed Orman’s voting history here or anywhere else.
Meadowlark’s research is usually better than this. So he’s either sleep-deprived, or intentionally trying to smear Orman with a twisted report of the facts. I’m betting he gets his beauty-rest. So much for the objectivity of Meadowlark’s research.
You know, I really don’t despise Pat as much as I do some of the others. However, his willingness to defend, deflect, and deny for his party over the nation leaves me to believe he needs to be out of office.
Looks like Meadowlark has an agenda, is is willing to say whatever it takes.
I’ll vote for any contender to Roberts throne, actually I mean replace Roberts as Court Jester.
Tom,
We meet again.
“AWOL” was used to indicate Orman wasn’t voting in Kansas. I don’t care where he votes, or where he lives. If Orman wants to represent Kansas, perhaps he could live here was the point.
Nowhere did I say “independent party”. I said he was an “independent voter”. I used the word “independent” since that is the common name for someone listed as “unaffiliated.”
Orman was registered in Kansas in 2002, but does not show up in old Kansas files in 2003, 2004, 2005 or 2006. His voting history over this period is unknown. His residence is unknown. You’re distorting what I was saying.
I am not defending Kline’s decision to have his residence be an apartment in Johnson County , where he grew up and has spent something like 37 years of his life, and keep a home in Topeka while he is DA in Johnson County. If Phill Kline is breaking the law, why doesn’t Attorney General Morrison do something about it? In general, the courts let voters decide such things, but if Morrison brings charges, and Kline is guilty of breaking the law, he should step down.
I may be sleep-deprived (there is so much to do and too little time), but I think my analysis is valid. Why do you only try to distort what I say and impugn me? Civil discourse on almost any subject is almost impossible.
Brownback should have been classified as a Deserter.
Calling someone “AWOL,” which is a criminal act under the UCMJ, is not an impugnment? Okay. I’ll be sure to start spreading that word.
Everyone, you’ve heard it all from the authoritative source. Meadowlark says AWOL is no longer a crime. Spread the word.
There is an “Independent Party,” with a platform and all that. Again, Orman is not a member of the Independent Party; he’s unaffiliated. If you have access to the KSSOS voter file, you’d know this, and report it accurately instead of leaving it open for confusion.
I’m sure Orman’s voting history _is_ known, just not to _you_. People do move out of state for school, for family, for business. They sometimes vote in their new, temporary homes. Should all Kansans running for public office, who grew up here (as you point out Kline did), check in with you from now on, and make sure you have their detailed voting history prior to declaring their candidacies?
Everyone, again, spread the word. Meadowlark is now the official repository for all voting histories of all expatriate Kansans.
Oh, and if anyone really believes that Kline and his wife really live in that crappy little apartment above the storage facility, I have a bridge for sale. It’s located in some prime swampland, already zoned for development. Give me a call.
Well, this has turned into the Tom rant and rancor thread hasn’t it.
Excellent way to address the substance of what I posted, Trollboy. Zero points for style, zero points for effort. That makes your total for the month: Zero. Unless of course we start running negative numbers, and subtract for every time you lie.
Well Tom I do use the “cannon ball” rather than a “full gainer” when diving into muddied waters. :)
Roberts did go against bushco on SCHIP. I too am very disappointed in how he has walked lockstep with bushco. He played a BIG part in covering up for them and their rush to war. Too many really bad decisions he supported, aided and abetted. He definitely lowered my opinion of him. Let’s hope someday Kansas can find a person more concerned with our country than a political party. Roberts has proven to me he isn’t that kind of person!
Pat Roberts has done a good job of pork-barrel wasteful spending; that will likely assure his re-election.
That’s how Dole stayed on the public dole for so long! Some people’s definition of fiscal responsibility seems to change depending on whose spending they’re discussing.
It appears that most of you feel this is the only outlet you can be heard??
It’s not. There are several grassroot orginizations springing up which have the attention of many of our elected officials.
Imigration is only one of the important issues that Congress in total has ignored the HUGE silent majority. This year through grass roots orginizations we have made a difference. We can make differences if we become involved and vocal. Vocal by making phone calls, sending faxes and emails. We are not helpless, and now the PREVIOUSLY silent majority is waking up, not only on imigration but other equally important issues as well. We need to take our country back from those who choose to drown out the Amerian who cares!!

I call Roberts, Brownback and Tiahrt often; I write them letters and send emails. In more recent missives (for about the past year!) I’ve asked each of them to PLEASE not send me the form letter that I think further wastes MY money and never responds to my concerns. When the form letter arrives it just enforces my belief that they never read my letter in the first place.
I’ll check out your links. I’m very willing to do my part but would love to know if there is a way to be more effective.
If you care, call and fax your opinions, when enough people care, they will change.

SO… our choices for senator in 08 will be…
Republican? Or republican lite?
Ok then…
OMG.. so keep those cards, letters, faxes and emails coming.
But be sure to include a few bucks for campaign donations.
‘Cause ya know… nothing changes hearts and minds like CASH!
I’m thinking emails and faxes pale in comparison to ready cash. But hey, if it makes ya feel better….
I know all the senators and congressmen from Kansas.
Just send the cash to me and I’ll see that your fax is right on top.
I don’t want no stingy postal cards.
Farmgrl you seem to be informed on the Kansas issues. Have you ever thought of running for public office?
Thought about it? Yes. Thought SERIOUSLY about it? No. Not in Kansas anyway. I’m not skilled at making a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.
I’ve come to belive the future is hopeless for Kansas. Theocracy and all. But please, y’all continue to fight over the scraps….
How many psychologists does it take to change a state? Only one, but the state has to really want to change.
You would have a good farmer base in the west because of the water issue and with green becoming more important would appeal to the GWers in the metro areas. Just a thought. I’m not prepared to write Kansas off just yet.
Well good for you. As a white, straight, republican, conservative, christian, businessowner, knock yerself out. This is the home of tyranny of the majority.
I’d say you were in the right place.
The rest of us should just go eat cake in some other state. And when the day comes that I have to leave my farm, I’ll do just that.
…not that my money or my talents will be MISSED.
heheheheheheheh!
Wrongo lovely lady of the farm!
Your fried chicken would be sorely missed!
Heh, thanks Hank! I’ll fry an extra leg for you next time.
Actually I kinda missed you a little when you were absent this past month.
(don’t tell anyone)
Frmgrl I see your good points even though you keep them well hidden sometimes. I am all of those things you mentioned but hope I don’t wear them on my sleeve because I do try to do the right thing for society and the environment every chance I get.
If you don’t believe me you should watch my 6′4″ husband fold himself into my Prius.
