Giving Ron Paul his due

Paulronhand GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul has set a new record for raising the most campaign money in one day on the Internet — an amazing $4.2 million.
Paul, who alone among the Republican field has the guts to call the Iraq War a mistake, is catching on with the public, and arguably the media haven’t been giving him his due, according to this column by Brent Budosky.
"The Ron Paul phenomenon is worth serious attention," he writes, "because in a campaign that is vapid and empty of substance, this guy is the real deal."
Paul is refreshing because he simply says what he thinks, and that helps explain his appeal, even among people who don’t agree with his views. People are tired of the double-talk and carefully parsed and test-marketed stands by candidates.

Third party! Third party! Third party!

It’s patently obvious that our federal government is wholly unresponsive to the will of the people.

Because of the electoral college system, something like 40 percent of the Senate only represents 11 percent of the population.

We haven’t had democracy in this country for a long time.

We have klepto-corporat-ocracy. Gov’t and corporations are joined together to feed at the public trough, and voters be damned: you’ll get more of the same and you’ll like it.

Like cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from Ron Paul.

I agree, the straightforward talk is refreshing! Go to YOUTUBE. Listen to Ron. Then Hillary. Then Ron, then any of the rest. All the rest are political mumbo-jumbo and can’t seem to give a straight answer.

I am no great fan of Bush – but at least he tells us how he really feels (in bushspeech). And despite the fact polls and majorities do not agree with him -he does not flip-flop on the issues. (Consequently he stays wrong many times.)

But I respect that. I don’t like him. But I have more respect for being oneself and honesty – than anything else.

Sorry, this was a Ron Paul thread…..

Might not be 5% in the polls if his name was actually mentioned in all of them. Face it, the campaign is for real and I hate to be the one to tell you this, but he’s the only republican on the stage that can beat Hillary Clinton. She sounds just like a Neocon, until you get to the socialized medicine. If you are interested in freedom of choice, restoration of all our civil liberties and a return to following the constitution with a small government that doesn’t distort the market with subsidies, that doesn’t run into endless wars with Nations who don’t attack us and a return to the rule of law and protecting our borders, then you want to look real hard at Dr. Ron Paul.

  26. Posted November 6, 2007 at 2:56 pm | Permalink

Rox asks:”What’s his stand on domestic issues? SS? Universal Health Care? Taxes?”

First, all of the following are to be paid for by bringing all our soldiers home. Not just from Iraq, but S. Korea, Germany, Europe, Iceland, Saudi Arabia, and the other 138 countries where we have troops permanently stationed. Bring our navy back to patrol our own shores, etc.

*Note: this is not counting any reductions in the size of the military, just redeployment savings*

    SS:
    - Continue payments to those that want to stay in the system.
    - Let younger workers out of it (if they want) so they can save their own money for their own retirement.

    Universal Health Care:
-For ending HMOs and Insurance Companies’ preferred tax status, which will bring down the cost, and raise the level of service, just like in any free market.

-Against any national health service like they have in UK or Canada.

-For everyone having access to medical services equally, just like everyone has access to a resturant.

-He never took Medicare as a doctor, instead treating patients for free. Many Doctors do pro-bono work, just like many lawyers do.

Taxes:- Reduce Government spending back to F.Y. 2000 spending levels.

    - Use the savings to wipe out the need for personal income tax. No more IRS in *your* life. This is personal income tax only.

Taxes would still be paid by corporations; all customs, duties, imposts, excise taxes, alcohol taxes, etc. will still be in place. The main requirement on these kinds of taxes is that they be uniform, not having different rates for different people.

Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution gives Congress lots of legitimate taxing authority. Paul is a champion of the Constitutional, so anything authorized by Art. I Sec. 8 is not going to be automatically vetoed.

    Hope this helps.

One of the great things about Ron Paul is that he endorses — in fact he wrote a book about it — a return to the gold standard.

Using gold as money takes control of money away from politicians on both right and left, who use their control of fiat money as a way to increase income to government at the cost of everyone else.

Perhaps not, but (writing from Texas here), the man does not demonstrate much skill at building consensus. Paul stands for small government, lower taxes, less government intrusion into the citizens lives, fiscal responsibility. 3. He voted against the Patriot Act.

    4. He voted against the Iraq War.

    5. He never votes for legislation unless the proposed measure is expressly authorized by the Constitution.

    6. He is campaigning to stop federal agencies and special interests from driving property owners from their homes.

    7. He believes that imposing tax on Social Security benefits is unfair and illogical.

    8. He believes that it is unconstitutional to pay taxes on our income, that our forefathers never intended private citizens’ income to be taxable, and seeks to completely eliminate the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

    9. He has a six-point plan for border security and immigration reform, although he believes we make illegal immigrants the scapegoat through a system we’ve designed to be incoherent and unjust.

    10. He acknowledges that “the biggest threat to our privacy is the government.”

    Ron Paul Wins!

That’s the headline today after the first New York State Republican Straw Poll.

Clearly, after raking in a record amount of money the other day, Mr. Paul is on a roll. He seems to have out-organized his fellow Republicans — on Rudy Giuliani’s home turf.

The New York State straw poll was conducted Tuesday at the Metropolitan Republican Club in New York City. The results: Mr. Paul, 26 votes; Mr. Giuliani, 21; Mitt Romney, 6; John McCain, 4; Mike Huckabee, 2; Duncan Hunter, 1; Tom Tancredo, 0.It is not clear why no votes were measured for Fred Thompson.
