    Food for thought

    1 Samuel 16:7-

But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

The task force working on the homeless issue has done a great job bringing many points of view to the issue.

I commend them for their effort and hope we can get our local electeds to back their recommendations.

The Little Arkansas River level will be lowered beginning Dec. 5 to accommodate reconstruction of the Minisa bridge on 13th Street immediately west of North High School. The river level will remain down for the duration of the project, scheduled for completion by early October 2008.

Much of the reconstruction work has to be done from the riverbed itself, and lowering the water level will expedite that work. It will also help to keep the temporary pedestrian crossing that will be built across the river, north of the bridge, accessible as much as possible.

“We’re going to do everything we can to keep this project moving forward” says Gary Janzen, Chief Design Engineer for the City of Wichita.

The project will provide wider driving lanes and a new support structure, while preserving the historic elements of the 75-year old bridge, including the Carthalite images of Native Americans and buffaloes. The work will require the closure of the 13th Street Bridge from January15, 2008 to early August 2008, weather dependant. The bridge and 13th Street will be open to one lane of traffic in each direction during the final phase of the project, August to October 2008.

More than140, 000 passengers arrived and departed through the gates of Wichita Mid-Continent Airport (ICT) in October, an increase of 10.32 percent from October 2006. For the year to date, passengers at ICT totaled 1,315,369, an increase of 8.95 percent from the same period last year. This is ICT’s 13th consecutive month of increased passenger traffic.

According to the latest data available from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, U.S. domestic passenger traffic was up 1.7% through August 2007. This compares to an 8.6% increase in ICT’s traffic for the same timeframe.

“With Frontier Airlines’ entering the Wichita market in October, Mid-Continent Airport now has more flight options and lower air fares, which have undoubtedly impacted this spectacular growth at ICT,” commented Charles Fletcher, Chairman of the Wichita Airport Advisory Board.

Mid-Continent Airport offers 50 daily departures on over 3,600 seats, and non-stop service to 12 destinations.

Mayor Brewer’s City Manager Resignation Statement

Wichita City Manager George Kolb on Wednesday announced his plans to resign as the city’s top administrator. Kolb’s resignation, effective Jan. 2, follows extended discussions with Mayor Carl Brewer and Wichita City Council members regarding philosophical differences. The City Manager, who reports to the seven-member Council, oversees 3,100 employees, a $500 million annual budget and a $2.4 billion Capital Improvement Program.

Kolb has served as City Manager since July 26, 2004. Council Members praised him for focusing on City Hall customer service, implementing the Transforming Wichita initiative, initiating the process for a new airport terminal, retooling the budget process and emphasizing Core Area improvements, including award-winning Old Town and the StopBlight initiative in distressed residential and commercial neighborhoods.

“The City of Wichita has moved forward under George’s management,” Mayor Brewer said. “Despite our philosophical differences with the Manager, the Council maintains great respect for his integrity, his commitment to public service and his passion for improving municipal government. He’s been a professional, a friend and a confidante.”

Kolb will assist with the transition, and city management responsibilities will be assigned to assistant city managers. A nationwide search will be conducted for Kolb’s successor. Information regarding an interim City Manager will be announced later.
