Kansas Health and Environment Secretary Rod Bremby wants to work with utilities to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from existing coal-fired power plants. But utility officials last week said there wasn’t much they could do.
“There is no large-scale, proven technology to reduce carbon dioxide emissions,†said Karla Olsen, a spokeswoman for Westar Energy, according to an article in the Lawrence Journal-World.
So what are we to make of Sunflower Electric Power Corp.’s claims that its experimental algae-biofuels project at the proposed Holcomb plant would have rendered the facility almost carbon-neutral?

well, i don’t know what to think about an energy company that says conflicting things about a common problem.
when will the citizens wake up to lying snd cheating that hurts our country long term.
when will the time come that we will think about how to solve very real problems instead of repeating the completely made up slogans and media bits from the right’s media stars.
is it that easy to sell out the future of your kids for… what is it that you get back for supporting such evil people.

Actually, there are at least TWO proven large-scale technologies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
The first is “wind power.” The second is “higher gas prices.”
Wind power gets a bad rap because “the wind doesn’t always blow.” Well, duh. People’s lights aren’t on all the time, either. Just build a pumped-storage hydro plant and store the energy.
But if you’re really interested in cutting carbon dioxide emissions, your biggest bang for the buck would be to raise the price of driving enough so that people think twice before hopping in the car and heading out on the freeway.
Politicans lie. Big business lies more. Why? Well, first of all big business buys a few politicans to lie for them..then business lies and the paid for politicans back them up. Let’s see which politicans Weststar has given money to.
With our bought and paid for politicians wanting to rewrite the rules so Sunflower (there’s an oxymoron) can build its pollution devices out west, I see them being built.
I can only hope we can vote the bums out prior to it happening.
Looks like the BIG POWER and BIG ETHANOL industries have declared war on Kansas and Kansans. Is this a new trend by big business to try to stomp rough shod on the very people they serve and receive their income from.
Remember Al Capp’s Li’l Abner comic strip that was carried in the Wichita Beacon years ago? Somehow Li’l Abner would say “What’s good for General Electric (or was it General Motors) has to be good for America.” Seems to be a parallel here.
I wonder if Janis Lee et al would like a little cheese with their whine?

And today Sam Brownback knowingly repeated those lies.
This morning’s Sunday Wichita EAGLE carry’s several “articles” relating to the proposed coal-fed power plants out near Holcomb, Kansas, about ten miles straight west of Garden City.
One is a large two page advertisement on pages 4B and 5B paid for by “Know your power Kansas,” which is cited to be “a coalition of concerned doctors, health organizations, educators, citizens, businesses and students … funded by Chesapeake Energy Corporation.”
This fact sheet contains a major amount of information citing the errors and outright lies told by proponents of the proposed coal-fed power plant. The fact sheet information appears to be generally correct as I study it.
On the other hand, Senator Sam Brownback, fresh back from a long stint to Iowa, still trying to find his way around the roads of Kansas … frantically presents his “opinion” on this morning’s Eagle’s editorial page. He is UNBELIEVABLY SUPPORTING the massive, air polluting, underground aquifer-gulping coal fed power plant. Does he have any feelings for the health of Kansans?
I see many mistakes and exagerations in Brownback’s rant but suffice it to say it reeks of potential campaign contributions from the “big coal” and “big ethanol” industries.
How Brownback can expect his “pro-coal” and “pro-ethanol” positions to get him elected as a future Kansas governor as is rumored to be his next goal … is beyond me.
So, Brownback, I suggest you start looking for a small fundamentalist church in Mississippi with a preacher vacancy coming up. That might be your highest and best future opportunity.

This scheme only works if you are Al Gore. No one else can get away with carbon-neutral or carbon credit schemes like the GORACLE.
What are you to make of the experimental procedure to reduce the ‘bad’ emissions? Perhaps you continue to experiment until you can prove or disprove it.
Or maybe you could lower your standards and just run some computer models and call it proof. Works for the ‘global warming is going to kill us all’ crowd.

The models we have been used have been run on past climates to calibrate them.
They have been accurate over the past several years as climate has begun to change.
You can and should run pilot plant trials on something like microalgae. That cannot be done on a planetary scale.
Our scientific methods allow for both lab-scale and observational (planetary) studies. I can show you that in my undergraduate biology text.

Well, we will enact a complicated system of carbon credits with a cap and trade system. This should be in place within the next 10 years.
