Jimmy Carter calls Cheney a “disaster” for U.S.

    Wed Oct 10, 2007 6:42pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter on Wednesday denounced Vice President Dick Cheney as a “disaster” for the country and a “militant” who has had an excessive influence in setting foreign policy.

“He’s a militant who avoided any service of his own in the military and he has been most forceful in the last 10 years or more in fulfilling some of his more ancient commitments that the United States has a right to inject its power through military means in other parts of the world,” Carter told the BBC World News America in an interview to air later on Wednesday.

“You know he’s been a disaster for our country,” Carter said. “I think he’s been overly persuasive on President George Bush and quite often he’s prevailed.”

Carter, a Democrat who was president from 1977 to 1981 and won the 2002 Nobel Peace prize for his charitable work, is a strong critic of the Iraq war and has often been outspoken in his criticism of President George W. Bush.

In a newspaper interview in May, Carter called the Bush administration the “worst in history” in international relations.

Nobel Prize winners and thinking people everywhere agree:

Bush is the Worst. President. Ever.

I was not to kind to carter when he was President, his giving back the Panama canal and all.I had not respect for him until I watch a history of the man, honorable service in the Submarine fleet. So thing the article failed to mention though, Carter recounted when he and Roslyn were on the dais at bush’s first swearing in. Bush asked if there was anything he could do for the former President and Carter said yes aid the Sudan. Bush kept his promise to work for the Carter cause of Sudan.

As to Cheney, this is news?

Cheney is Nixon without the charm.

The Big Dick recognized that he couldn’t be president on his own and found Shrub’s aw-shucks-ism would appeal to the Limbaugh-tomized Masses.

Our first clue should have been when Dumbya assigned Big Dick to select his running mate in 2000. Cheney said he looked high and low and there was no one in America better than he.

Oh what will the Republican talking points be for today? You have to listen to Rush to get the Republican talking points! If you miss Rush today, listen to Beck, Hannity, Boortz, Medved or Ingrham tomorrow as all of them just repeat what Rush will say today.

What do you want a bet that the Religious Right Nutcase Club will soon come around and support Rudy? Despite the fact that they are griping and bitching, I bet they will. They are used to being treated like a prison bitch by the GOP who only shows up to them at election time and talk about “family values” and then ignore them the rest of the year! So now we will see if they really will support a two timing liar that has been divorced 3 times, dresses in drag, marches in gay parades and supports abortion on demand and gay rights. My bet is that they will because with these people, it was never about “God” or “Jesus” but their own bloody political agenda.

Pentagon: Military Meets Recruitment Goals for the Year

“WASHINGTON — All branches of the Armed Forces met or exceeded their recruitment goals for the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, and the Army expects to accelerate its expansion in the next two years, top brass at the Pentagon announced Wednesday.

David Chu, undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness, told reporters that the Army recruited 80,407 new soldiers this year, exceeding its goal of 80,000. The Navy recruited 37,361 just over its goal of 37,000; the Marines recruited 35,603, skimming the top of its 35,576 objective. The Air Force exactly met its new enlistment rate of 27,801.” fox news

Study: Common Ancestor of All Apes Walked Upright

    Wednesday, October 10, 2007

    By Charles Q. Choi

The ancestors of humanity are often depicted as knuckle-draggers, making humans seem unusual in our family tree as “upright apes.”

Controversial research now suggests the ancestors of humans and the other great apes might have actually walked upright too, making knuckle-walking chimpanzees and gorillas the exceptions and not the rule.

In other words, “the other great apes we see now, such as chimps or gorillas or orangutans, might have descended from human-like ancestors,” researcher Aaron Filler, a Harvard-trained evolutionary biologist and medical director at Cedars-Sinai Institute for Spinal Disorders in Los Angeles, told LiveScience. fox news

    http://www.pnhp.org/facts/singlepayer_faq.php#raise_taxes

    Won’t this raise my taxes?

Currently, about 64% of our health care system is financed by public money: federal and state taxes, property taxes and tax subsidies. These funds pay for Medicare, Medicaid, the VA, coverage for public employees (including teachers), elected officials, military personnel, etc. There are also hefty tax subsidies to employers to help pay for their employees’ health insurance. About 17% of heath care is financed by all of us individually through out-of-pocket payments, such as co-pays, deductibles, the uninsured paying directly for care, people paying privately for premiums, etc. Private employers only pay 19% of health care costs. In all, it is a very “regressive” way to finance health care, in that the poor pay a much higher percentage of their income for health care than higher income individuals do.

A universal public system would be financed this way: The public financing already funneled to Medicare and Medicaid would be retained. The difference, or the gap between current public funding and what we would need for a universal health care system, would be financed by a payroll tax on employers (about 7%) and an income tax on individuals (about 2%). The payroll tax would replace all other employer expenses for employees’ health care. The income tax would take the place of all current insurance premiums, co-pays, deductibles, and any and all other out of pocket payments. For the vast majority of people a 2% income tax is less than what they now pay for insurance premiums and in out-of-pocket payments such as co-pays and deductibles, particularly for anyone who has had a serious illness or has a family member with a serious illness. It is also a fair and sustainable contribution. Currently, over 41 million people have no insurance and thousands of people with insurance are bankrupted when they have an accident or illness. Employers who currently offer no health insurance would pay more, but they would receive health insurance for the same low rate as larger firms. Many small employers have to pay 25% or more of payroll now for health insurance – so they end up not having insurance at all. For large employers, a payroll tax in the 7% range would mean they would pay less than they currently do (about 8.5%). No employer, moreover, would hold a competitive advantage over another because his cost of business did not include health care. And health insurance would disappear from the bargaining table between employers and employees.

Another consideration is that everyone would have the same comprehensive health coverage, including all medical, hospital, eye care, dental care, long-term care, and mental health services. Currently, many people and businesses are paying huge premiums for insurance that is almost worthless if they were to have a serious illness.

Army offers big cash to keep key officersRetention especially important in military intelligence, infantry and aviation

“The Army is offering cash bonuses of up to $35,000 to retain young officers serving in key specialties — including military intelligence, infantry and aviation — in an unprecedented bid to forestall a critical shortage of officer ranks that have been hit hard by frequent deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Army officials said that lengthy and repeated war-zone tours — the top reason younger officers leave the service — plus the need for thousands of new officers as the Army moves forward with expansion plans have contributed to a projected shortfall of about 3,000 captains and majors for every year through 2013.” MSNBC

    True conservative

One thing about right-wingers — they’ll provide no end of entertainment if one studies them closely. Witness their fawning over the entry of Fred “Revolving D.C. Door” Thompson into the presidential race as a “conservative.” It just illustrates how eager they are to be deceived.

There is exactly one genuinely pro-life, constitutional-government, low-tax, secure-borders, gun-rights, national-sovereignty, sound-money — and apparently incorruptible — Republican candidate running for president. In short, he is everything “conservatives” say they want, and nothing they say they don’t want. By “genuinely,” I mean as shown by his record of public acts, not by what his handlers tell him is the “right” rhetoric for the crowd to which he’s speaking that night.

His name is Ron Paul. And about this single truly conservative candidate, the silence on the right is positively deafening. I find it quite illuminating.

Hmmmm…. Devolution? Another, we really don’t know- evolution is just our best guess that doesn’t include God- moment.

Here’s another. Remember how the appendix was theorized by Darwin and evolutionists a vestigial organ that proved Darwinian evolution since it no longer had a purpose as man evolved? Not so. Check this out:

The human body like all higher mammals has a host of vestigial structures. A structure like an appendix can be both vestigial (in that it doesn’t do what it used to do) and functional (in that it plays some new role).

Other vestigial structures are the non-functioning tear duct in our eyes, the non-functioning salivary glands in our lips, and the third molar, which is getting smaller and more deformed as the generation pass.

I think bush would approve of these interrogation practices.”You are no longer monks,” Myanmar prisoners told By Aung Hla Tun
Thu Oct 11, 7:36 AM ET

YANGON (Reuters) – Hundreds of Buddhist monks rounded up by Myanmar’s junta were beaten and kept in animal-like conditions without toilets or drinking water during days of interrogation, one of those freed said on Thursday.

ADVERTISEMENT”At the beginning it was very, very bad,” one recently released monk told Reuters, requesting anonymity because of the threat of repercussions against those who speak out against the regime, the latest face of 45 years of unbroken military rule.

Caged for more than a week at a former Government Technical Institute compound in north Yangon, the monks — revered figures in the devoutly Buddhist nation — were stripped of their maroon monastic robes and treated like common criminals.

“When one of us used a pronoun referring to himself as a monk, he was slapped,” the monk said. “Then an interrogator said: ‘You are no longer a monk. You are just an ordinary man with a shaven head.”‘

The monks, mostly young men whom the army sees as the biggest threat to its iron grip on power because of their moral authority, were packed into rooms so tightly they could not lie down, let alone sleep, in the sweltering monsoon season heat.

For days, they had no toilet, nowhere to wash their hands, and were forced to scoop up slops of barely cooked rice with their bare hands.

“We had no spoons or forks so we had to eat with our fingers,” said the monk, who spent 10 days in the makeshift detention centre. “The food was horrible.”

At times during the relentless barrage of questioning to identify ringleaders of the biggest anti-junta protests in 20 years, the monks were forced to put their hands on their heads and squat while their inquisitors remained seated on chairs.

Those who gave wrong or inadequate answers were hit about the head or kicked, the monk said.

There was no medical treatment, he added, for those hurt during interrogation or during the nocturnal raids on Yangon monasteries in the final week of September, the first wave of a ruthless and clinical response to the demonstrations.

Through its rigidly controlled state media, the junta admits 10 people were killed in the crackdown, although Western governments say the toll is likely to be much higher.

The monk’s testimony tallies with other accounts of abuse of detainees, including the reported death in custody of a member of the opposition near the former Burma’s second city of Mandalay.

The Thailand-based Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPPB), a group of former detainees with extensive contacts, said on Wednesday 42-year-old Win Shwe had died “as a result of torture during interrogation.”

As the junta continued to arrest dissidents, official papers accused foreign governments — essentially the United States and Britain — and media of stirring up the protests, which started in mid-August against shock increases in fuel prices.

“Stooges of foreign countries, neglecting the national prestige and integrity, put on a play written by their foreign masters,” the official New Light of Myanmar said.

Did Capt really post what you re-posted? Something about bring on the war? I thought he was against war?

I saw this coming when the first map of the US came out with the Red and Blue states.

Maybe it is time for another civil war. Only this time it will not be the Blue and Grey.

I know this polarized country can’t last. 51-49 percent back and forth, will never unit us. I wonder if our congress is as bitter as during the civil war? As divided?

Imagine if people here in the midwest, bright people, nice people, from the good country, cannot get along – what’s happening elsewhere?

I’ll never convert. Capt America will never convert and is calling for war. Maybe it is time.

    Did someone say succession?

    A reminder from yesterday…

    Dear Red States…

We’ve decided we’re leaving. We intend to form our own country, and we’re taking the other Blue States with us.
In case you aren’t aware, that includes Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and all the Northeast. We believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especially to the people of the new country of New California.
To sum up briefly: You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states.
We get stem cell research and the best beaches. We get Elliot Spitzer. You get Ken Lay.

We get the Statue of Liberty. You get Dollywood. We get Intel and Microsoft. You get WorldCom.
We get Harvard. You get Ole’ Miss.
We get 85 percent of America’s venture capital and entrepreneurs. You get Alabama.

We get two-thirds of the tax revenue, you get to make the red states pay their fair share.
Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the
Christian Coalition’s, we get a bunch of happy families. You get a
    bunch of single moms.
Please be aware that Nuevo California will be pro-choice and
anti-war, and we’re going to want all our citizens back from Iraq at
once. If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They have
kids they’re apparently willing to send to their deaths for no
purpose, and they don’t care if you don’t show pictures of their
children’s caskets coming home. We do wish you success in Iraq, and
hope that the WMDs turn up, but we’re not willing to spend our
    resources in Bush’s Quagmire.
With the Blue States in hand, we will have firm control of 80 percent of the country’s fresh water, more than 90 percent of the pineapple and lettuce, 92 percent of the nation’s fresh fruit, 95 percent of America’s quality wines (you can serve French wines at state dinners) 90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the high tech industry, most of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods, sequoias and condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools, plus Harvard, Yale,
    Stanford, Cal Tech and MIT.
With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope with 88 percent of all obese Americans (and their projected health care costs), 92 percent of all U.S. mosquitoes, nearly 100 percent of the tornadoes, 90 percent of the hurricanes, 99 percent of all Southern Baptists, virtually 100 percent of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh, Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia.
We get Hollywood and Yosemite, thank you. YOU GET KANSAS!!!
Additionally, 38 percent of those in the Red states believe Jonah was actually swallowed by a whale, 62 percent believe life is sacred unless we’re discussing the death penalty or gun laws, 44 percent say that evolution is only a theory, 53 percent that Saddam was involved in 9/11 and…

61 percent of you crazy b*****ds believe you are people with higher morals then we lefties.
By the way, we’re taking the good pot, too. You can have that dirt
    weed they grow in Mexico.
    Peace out,
    Blue States

Please see the following quotes from Dickens, Marx, and Lincoln:

“The Northern onslaught upon slavery was no more than a piece of specious humbug designed to conceal its desire for economic control of the Southern states.”–Charles Dickens, 1862.

“The war between the North and the South is a tariff war. The war is further, not for any principle, does not touch the question of slavery, and in fact turns on the Northern lust for sovereignty.”–Karl Marx, 1861.

When asked “Why not let the South go in peace?” President Abraham Lincoln replied: “I can’t let them go. Who would pay for the government?”

  80. Posted October 11, 2007 at 11:13 am | Permalink

Nice post kfg, guess you’ll have to contend with that Republican Governor of California though.

Course, Hollyfornia will running low on water once Arizona shuts off the spigot.

Oh and don’t forget that one of the largest debt in the world is in Hollyfornia. They are so far in the red even a check from Bill Gates wouldn’t make the edges turn pink.

When that big North to South big one comes along the San Andreas fault, you going to rename Hollyfornia east and West? The new Grand Canyon? The “Great Ditch of the West?”

Course, with Michigan and New York, you’ll have one of the largest Muslim populations on this side of the pond – hope you are in to foot washing and praying five times a day. I suggest buying a prayer rug now to save on cost overhead charges.

Now that the blue states have formed a more perfect Onion, you can get that nanny care you’ve been whining about. Of course after taxes, you’ll be able to pull down about 30 percent of your gross income to go out and buy..er something less than what you are used to.

I guess we’ll be liking our oil refineries and gas storage. Might just keep that for ourselves, unless you’re willing to pay about oh let’s say 600 percent of the normal premium, plus the import tax we would charge you.

Then there would be that no flight zone from NY to Hollyfornia, lot of Interceptor bases between here and there. Sorry, no truck transport, since the majority of the highway system will be ours, we just can’t have any NY or Hollyfornia trucks stinking up our roads.

By the way, that Mexican super highway through Arizona should be complete any day now. Just thought we let you know you’ll be having about 30 million new guests arriving.

    EVERYBODY PANIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Why ‘Socialism’ Evokes No Fear

Posted on Oct 11, 2007By Joe Conason

Once among the most frightening epithets in American political culture, “socialized medicine” seems to have lost its juju. Today that phrase sounds awfully dated, like a song on a gramophone or a mother-in-law joke or a John Birch Society rant against fluoridated water.

Yet despite that antique quality, the old buzzwords appear regularly in columns, press releases and speeches. Rudolph Giuliani, Mitt Romney and the rest of the Republican presidential pack run around squawking about socialism whenever anyone proposes health care reform. Syndicated columnist Robert Novak warns that the federally financed, state-run Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is essentially a socialist conspiracy. So does President Bush, who has threatened to veto a modest increase in that program’s funding because he doesn’t want to “federalize health care.”

Although the red threat still triggers an autonomic reaction among GOP true believers, the rest of the country no longer twitches to that high-pitched, far-right whistle. Most polls not only show enormous majorities favoring extension of coverage to every child, but substantial support for a radical change in how we pay and administer health insurance—including the possibility of a single-payer system.

Why doesn’t the traditional propaganda work any more? Perhaps the demise of the Soviet Union and the withering of Communism in China have had a delayed effect on public attitudes here. Both the Russians and the Chinese have turned more capitalist than the West, abandoning their former systems without substituting modern protections. The ex-Communists are more of a threat to the health of their own societies than to us. Most Americans may also have noticed that corporate bureaucracy and corruption, which figure largely in the present health care system, are not preferable to government bureaucracy. Doctors who used to wail about the dangers of Medicare have learned how unpleasant it is to deal with dozens of insurance companies, each creating different rules to cut costs and deny care. So have their patients.

This corporate model is more expensive and less efficient than the government plans that provide care in every other industrialized nation. ……(more)

WASHINGTON – Disgraced Democratic moneyman Norman Hsu was so in tune with Bill and Hillary Clinton, the ex-President apparently signed his sax.

According to search warrants released by prosecutors Wednesday, FBI agents grabbed hundreds of bottles of pricey wine and “one saxophone autographed by a former President of the United States.”

Agents found the gold-plated horn – worth about $1,100 in music stores – in the living room of Hsu’s swank SoHo loft.

Presidential candidate John Edwards is caught in a shocking mistress scandal that could wreck his campaign, The NATIONAL ENQUIRER has learned exclusively.

Sources have come forward to charge that the “other woman” previously worked on Edwards’ campaign and followed the 54-year-old candidate on trips across the U.S.

A source close to the woman, whose name is being withheld by The NATIONAL ENQUIRER, says that she confessed to having an affair in phone calls and emails, saying that her work with Edwards soon exploded into romance. The shocking allegation — if proven true — could devastate the Democratic hopeful’s campaign, especially because John’s devoted wife Elizabeth is locked in a desperate battle with breast cancer.

“The affair started about 18 months ago,” a friend says the woman confessed to her. “When they met at a bar, sparks flew immediately. “She never expected it would turn sexual since John is married and is running for President. But it soon did — and she fell for him.”

Dems let six million Jews die in WWII even though they heard about the death camps by the late 1930s. They were too busy pandering the Nazi party with words and white flag scenarios.

Democrats are also big fans of Stalin. Like Democrats, Stalin blamed other people for his problems, never one to lay the blame at his feet or the system that kept him in power. Democrats and liberals hate conservativism, Stalin hated capitalism. One of the dirtiest sleight of hand tactics that Stalin used was to rewrite history to besmirch, denigrate and tarnish the image of those leaders who had come before him and political enemies that he faced. Stalin used slander as a tool to help eliminate his opponents.”

So you see history repeats itself. The Dems side constantly with Palestine and other Jew hating countries. There wasn’t a peep from the left about the Iranian’s leader stating there was no holocaust, because the Dems never believed it either.

Hundreds of thousands in Darfur are being slaughtered and starving to death. At the time, Hillary Clinton is building her “war chest” for her Presidential campaign, wining and dining at luxury hotels and Presidential suites. The new Stalins of the world are just old pals of the Democrats. You know, they just have to turn their heads away and the problem will disappear after awhile.

I think you’re right. I recall you making this same type of request several times.

I got an email from Phillip Brownlee not long ago where he said that the editors are examining their options on monitoring. I think even the Eds are recognizing that things here are getting way out of hand.

I have been to very tightly monitored sites where if someone posts something as innocuous as “I feel sorry for you” [usually, though, a good early warning sign of flaming] the monitors will shut down the thread – which has the effect of punishing all for the lack of discretion of a few. I would hate to see this type of monitoring and response here, because all threads would be shut down.

Too bad that some people can’t be responsible for their behavior.

I think the atmosphere here has been poisoned and has gotten worse lately. I bet we would even disagree on the culprits we’d name for this effect.

    Anyway, thanks for your comment.

Why is the president of the United States trying to get the tele-communications companies off the hook for their illegal activity?

He is supposed to be upholding laws, not encouraging companies to break them.

Businesses that break the law should be held accountable. We expect these companies to keep our personal information private, and if they break the law, there should be consequences—not a re-write of the rule book.

Trade Deficit Improves SignificantlyThursday October 11, 9:12 am ET
By Martin Crutsinger, AP Economics Writer
Record Exports Help Push Trade Deficit to Lowest Level in 7 Months

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. trade deficit fell to the lowest level in seven months, helped by record-high sales of American products and the declining value of the dollar. The deficit with China declined as imports edged down slightly following a string of high-profile recalls. The Commerce Department reported Thursday that the deficit declined to $57.6 billion in August, down 2.4 percent from the July imbalance. It was lowest gap between exports and imports since January and a much better showing than had been expected.

In other economic news, the Labor Department said that the number of newly laid off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits fell by 12,000 last week to 308,000. That was a better showing than had been expected.

As I expected, in reviewing the linked piece from ksgrm, the dollar’s devaluation had a bit to do with the slight improvement. Still troubling: the amount of oil being purchased from foreign sources continues to climb; the slight change in the trade imbalance with China surprisingly was not apparently related to the recalls of toys, as more toys produced in China were actually imported, but the decline was in the areas of computers and furniture; and there was a decline in the area of “foreign car” purchases.

Fresno council member wrote of using ‘dirty bomb’ to kill liberals.

Fresno residents and community leaders, outraged by an e-mail message in which City Council Member Jerry Duncan wished he had a “dirty bomb” to kill every liberal in Fresno, called Thursday for his resignation, recall or reprimand.

Sadly, the messages that Rightwingstuff places on its own political products are quite often very violent. Not just one or two products in the Rightwingstuff online catalog, but scores of them, literally call upon people to attack their political enemies.

    http://www.irregulartimes.com/rightwingstuffviolence.html

Sometimes, the acts of violence are national in scale. For example, one of the Rightwingstuff bumper stickers calls upon people to bomb France. This demand is ironic, given that conservatives claim to be fighting against terrorists with bombs.

It sounds far-fetched, but the Rightwingstuff organization is actually abusing the CafePress system in order to issue hunting licenses that purport to give conservative Americans the authority to hunt down liberals and kill them, with no limit. To the right you can see what this license to commit terrorism against American liberals looks like.

    http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1660672/posts

Ann Coulter had stated that her “only regret with [Oklahoma City bomber] Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times building.”

She added such a bombing would have been appropriate only if Times’ reporters and editors were inside.

Like when Crusader X threatened to put a bullet in Ed’s head?

Or like when Nathan theatened the libs that he would bring a gun to their meetup and make them run with fear?

Well, take the attorney out of the equation, and I think a whiney con did the same thing to Dr. Ben. And CF.

Huh. Worse than that. Folks in Collyer were contacted. They were fearful for a while that one of you wingnuts would come there and do violence in their community.

And dont forget tippy, who constantly threatened me with some vague “state agency” reporting.

I suggest the civil war be fought at the state level (so yes to whomever wanted to know if red people have to leave the blue states. I’m sure blue states will adopt controls/restrictions over where you travel. So those that want to stay red, should leave soonest).

Anyone that knows Nathan even a little bit understands that there was no real threat involved.

WS Clark was totally responsible for the poor attendance at that meet up. He intentionally misrepresented Nathan’s words and his intent.

Didn’t she mean just for the war?

the pursuit of common ground. The president said, “I believe we can find some common ground with the Democrats.” Pelosi agreed, saying, “Extending the hand of partnership to the president — not partisanship, but partnership — (I) say let’s work together to come to some common ground where we can solve the problem in Iraq.”

It was everyone ELSE who interpreted it as inclusive of all congressional/executive actions?

It didn’t work for Congress (under democrat control), so Max’s idea of common ground certainly cannot work on the blog.

But an analysis of more than 130 million home loans made over the past decade reveals that risky mortgages were made in nearly every corner of the nation, from small towns in the middle of nowhere to inner cities to affluent suburbs.

Sunday, April 01, 2007″Eerie similarities” with 1929 crashBy Richard Dawahare

Washington has duped the American citizen with crooked politics that have put private, special and corporate interests over the greater public interest. This chicanery is coming home to roost in the shattered financial ruins wrought by the perfect storm of soaring costs, shrinking wages and the impending explosion of the housing bubble, upon which average Americans have leveraged their record-setting level of borrowing.

For the first time in history. the average household debt — including mortgages — exceeded after-tax income by 29 per cent last year. Let that sink in. Americans owe more on average than their net income. Families spend 14.4 per cent of their disposable income on debt repayment, the largest share since the Fed began keeping such records in 1980.

“This is an unsustainable trend,” said Christian Weller, senior economist at The Center For American Progress. “People simply can’t borrow at the same rate they’ve borrowed in the past.” Weller, author of the report entitled Drowning In Debt, added that, “The data show that people are borrowing more money not because of over-consumption, but because they’re caught in a bind. In that bind, the only escape valve for middle-class families is to borrow more money.”

No longer do they teach basic family budgeting 101 in High School or at home.

    They did 25 years ago.

Billions of dollars in Public Education increases later, what are we getting for our money?

As for the sub-prime interest rates, some people got greedy taking in some teaser rate ARM loan deals EVEN WHEN 30-yr Fixed Rate mortgages were at or near historic lows.

And even today. 6.5% 30 yr fixed rate mortgages are not far from the 5.5% lows we saw a couple years ago.

Annie we just heard last night that a couple we know are declaring bankruptsy. The reason: Three years ago they took an interest only loan on their home. They are both professionals and he is in upper middle management at Boeing.

When forced to finance the amount they would now need because the principle has ben going up, they needed more than the house was worth.

They aren’t kids. Both in mid fifties. Why did they get in this position. Trying to keep up with the Jones. Taking trips they couldn’t afford. Thinking that they ‘deserved’ the best of everything.

Now do we blame scenes like this on the economy or on the bad decisions of the people caught in this debacle.

I disagree with Mr. Wellers assertion that we are where we are because we are in a bind.

Annie you are right about that. If your account advisor mentions REITS (Real Estate Investment Trusts) run the other way.

Good banks got in binds for this same reason. They were loaning more money that the fed qualified them for and had to sell off their best loans. These are very low risk ones. When the fed started tightening the screws even the better lenders found themselves in a bind.

I do think we are thru the worst. Maybe not. The news about our friends sure shook me.

In one we learned basic cooking instructions. You know like how to boil an egg. The next session was sewing. We learned things like sewing on buttons and the like. Then we had one on basic child care with the emphasis on how much is involved caring for a child. The last session was devoted to family money handling. We set up budgets. Learned about saving for emergencies. Living within our means. It was very informative.

One additional bit of interesting news on this is that the Hillary campaign is not formerly acknowledging Haggard’s endorsement. It seems he qualified his endorsement by saying if Hillary ran into something she did not know what to do about, Bill would be there to help her.

But if she is getting the Nascar dad vote across the board, this ‘08 election might look like Johnson v. Goldwater. [I am not saying the American people got a good deal with that outcome - as Ben would say, never vote for a presidential candidate from Texas]

I think Bill needs to farm out his foundation work. As Assistant President he and Hillary are going to have a lot of cleaning up to do.

There was an interesting interview last week. A Vermonter and a Southerner were both arguing for secession. Despite having different views of laws they would want to be enacted, they fundamentally agreed that the federal government was imperialistic and robbing Americans of their freedoms.

This idea got some temporary traction in California a couple years ago. A lot of people talked about it, then it died off. It will be interesting to see if this second-round campaign becomes sustained.

There were many reasons for the poor turnout at the last meet-up. For a few people it was Nathan’s comment. For others, it was family obligations or conflicting schedules. I wouldn’t say that Nathan’s comment was the main reason, but it was a small part.

    Fair enough?

And, Nathan, it may have been somewhere else that it was discussed instead of here, but several people did stand up for you.

The earned income credit (EIC) is a tax credit for certain people who work and have earned income under $38,348. A tax credit usually means more money in your pocket. It reduces the amount of tax you owe. The EIC may also give you a refund.IRS Pub 596

My pension fund is fully funded at somewhere near $4600 per year as it is… IF I claim that as INCOME, which I dont have to do — then I could not have an IRA… which, of course is limited… So, SOME people qualify for an IRA, and some dont!! But, hey, dont believe me… look it up for yourself!!

Kansas… when I retire, that Pension Plan you dont think much of, will be worth approximately $525,000 or more… depending on returns on investments…

It could be more, or a little less… but right now, that is the projection as of the beginning of the 4th Quarter, 2007…

Of course, the $4600 figure is totally dependent on what we call our Salary Basis…. And then there is a formula based on that, which determines the actual Pension fund figure for a given year… Depending on my salary basis, that amount could be as high as $10,000 per year… or as little as $2500…

So, you might not think of it as good… but, in my field, it is one of the better pension funds operating right now… Only 2 or 3 better that I know of right now…

The power that those 77 million will wield. The strength of their numbers – all like minded:

Today, the AARP refuses to consider a reduction in COLA. Today AARP refues to consider individual retirement accounts (horrible, horrendous). Today they cry:

    WE EARNED IT

(sidebar: Individual retirement accounts are A-OK now. Hillary has proposed them. Read 401K)

So just THINK about 77 million of us.

In 1950, there were 12 working Americans for every 1 person on SS. Today, I believe there are 3.

WASHINGTON – Missile technology, fighter jet parts, night vision goggles and other U.S. wartime equipment increasingly are being illegally smuggled to potential adversaries, such as China and Iran, the federal government said Thursday.

ADVERTISEMENTLast week, two Utah men were arrested for allegedly trying to sell parts over the Internet for F-4 and F-14 fighter jets — which are only flown by Iran. The week before, two engineers were indicted in San Jose, Calif., on charges of stealing computer chip designs intended for the Chinese military.

Government lawyers and investigators Thursday described a growing number of unauthorized exports that could be dangerous if the parts and supplies end up in the hands of terrorists or hostile nations.

“The concept of terrorists, criminals or rogue nations obtaining weapons and other restricted technology is chilling,” said Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Julie Myers, who oversees illegal export investigations as head of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Assistant Attorney General Ken Wainstein called new government efforts to crack down on illegal exports the Justice Department’s top counterintelligence priority.

A Pentagon report noted a 43 percent increase in 2005 in what it described as suspicious foreign contacts with U.S-based defense companies. Another report last year by U.S. intelligence officials found that a record 108 nations were trying to buy or otherwise obtain U.S. technology that is restricted for sale. It did not list which nations or specify whether some of them were U.S. allies.

Night vision goggles, body armor and equipment used in improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, have been in particular demand since the 2001 terror attacks that prompted the U.S.-led invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, officials said. But some prosecutors have been reluctant to pursue the smugglers because illegal export cases can be very complicated and time-consuming to chase.

“These are incredibly complicated cases,” Wainstein said, adding that training and assistance will be given to prosecutors and investigators working on a new task force under the departments of State, Justice, Homeland Security, Defense, Commerce and the FBI. The task force largely will focus on U.S.-based exporters who sell or ship equipment overseas without proper authorization.

Other recent smuggling cases of concern to national security officials include:

_An Indonesian man was indicted in Madison, Wis., Thursday on charges of conspiring to export rifle scopes to Indonesia.

_Pittsburgh company SparesGlobal, Inc., was sentenced last week for lying about exporting equipment used in nuclear reactors and ballistic missiles in 2003 that ended up in Pakistan.

_A man in California pleaded guilty in August to trying to smuggle 100,000 Uzi submachine guns and night vision goggles to Iranian government officials.

_Two men pleaded guilty in California on the same day, Aug. 1, to exporting military-use technology to China, including, in one case, computer code to help train fighter pilots.

Hillary is quacking like a socialist (again), why can’t liberals

Hillary is quacking like a socialist (again), why can’t liberals say the “S” word?To a liberal, giving every child born on USA soil (this includes illegal parents) $5000, sounds like a great way to start a new life. The flaw, to those who don’t choose to drink Hillary’s Kool Aid, is where is this $5000 coming from? Of course it’s tax-payers.

If this isn’t a clear case of re-distribution of wealth and Euro-Trash socialism, then Bill Clinton is not an adulterer.

    Posted October 11, 2007 at 10:17 pm | Permalink

MEREDITH, N.H. (AP) — Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani on Monday accused Democrats of favoring a controlling “nanny government” as he continued his bashing of the rival party. The former New York mayor, opening a two-day campaign trip in the first primary state, also claimed that Democrats would raise taxes between 20 percent to 30 percent. He offered no specifics to back up those figures.”Democrats are kind of falling over each other seeing who can raise taxes faster,” Giuliani said. “It looks like they’re going to raise taxes anywhere between 20 to 30 percent. John Edwards just said he’s going to raise the capital gains tax double that. Last time we did that, we lost 40 percent in revenue. The last time we did what John Edwards is discussing, the United States lost revenue by basically discouraging people from making investments.”Edwards has proposed raising capital gains taxes for the wealthy while creating tax breaks for the middle class. At a later appearance in Wolfeboro — where rival Mitt Romney has a lakefront summer home — Giuliani said the solution lies in lower taxes.”We should love this problem of taxes being too high by lowering taxes,”he said, standing on the steps of an ice cream shop.Last week, Giuliani called the Democrats the “party of losers” and singled out Edwards and Democratic Sen. Barack Obama for criticism on economics and foreign policy.Giuliani argued that he favors less government and lower taxes.”That’s what makes America great, not this nanny government that Democrats want to give us, where government controls your entire life,”he said.Giuliani leads in some national polls, but trails former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney by double figures in the most recent New Hampshire surveys. On Tuesday, Giuliani intends to outline his health care plan. Giuliani’s goal is to give individuals more control over health care decisions and to encourage state officials to come up with innovative solutions.Key to his plan is a $15,000 tax deduction for families to buy private health insurance, instead of getting insurance through employers. Any leftover funds could be rolled over year-to-year for medical expenses, under Giuliani’s plan.”That cash allows you to go out and buy cheaper and cheaper policies; you can have higher and higher deductibles,” Giuliani said earlier this month in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.He compared private health plans to plasma TVs, saying the plans would come down in cost as demand grows.Edwards criticized the pending plan in a statement.”Rudy Giuliani’s tinkering does not come close to solving the problems of a broken health care system that leaves 45 million uninsured or tens of millions facing financial ruin because of inadequate insurance,”Edwards said.Copyright (c) 2007 The Associated Press

WASHINGTON – While the military “quagmire” in Iraq was said to tip the scales of power in the U.S. midterm elections, most Americans have no idea more of their fellow citizens – men, women and children – were murdered this year by illegal aliens than the combined death toll of U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan since those military campaigns began.

Though no federal statistics are kept on murders or any other crimes committed by illegal aliens, a number of groups have produced estimates based on data collected from prisons, news reports and independent research.

Twelve Americans are murdered every day by illegal aliens, according to statistics released by Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa. If those numbers are correct, it translates to 4,380 Americans murdered annually by illegal aliens. That’s 21,900 since Sept. 11, 2001.

    Chas–

Don’t let these plicks try to scare you.

Half a million is plenty to retire on. 5 percent interest (a decent CD) x 500,000 is 25 grand a year without even drawing on the principle. SS will pay you anywhere between 15 to 20 grand in today’s money.

And because they want to believe it so badly, they are all convinced that SS is going broke. W thought SS would go broke in 1988.

It’s the only part of our gov’t that ISN’T broke.

You may well have more income when you retire than you have now.

  379. Posted October 12, 2007 at 1:45 am | Permalink

Yep Thats the way it looks to me… But, Since I opted out of SS, I wont get that… But I will do very good, since the $525,000 is what the fund is currently… And I still have 9 years left to be paid into it!! And the fund is earning at about 14.2% as of the end of 3rd Quarter!

  380. Posted October 12, 2007 at 1:52 am | Permalink

Uh, Chas, I’d check into getting into the SS system.

Even 10 years or so in would give you a guaranteed revenue stream after you retire.

On the other hand, your fund should easily double in 9 years.

Unless Commander Cod-Piece invades Iran. Then who the hell knows what’ll happen . . .

SS will pay you anywhere between 15 to 20 grand in today’s money.

That’s an amazing amount from SS!I would never claim to be such an expert. I hope noone is listening to you:

$895Average monthly Social Security benefit check for retired workers in 2002. This compares with $834 for disabled workers and $861 for widows and widowers. (Source: soon-to-be-released Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2003.)

$989Average monthly Social Security benefit check for retired workers in New Jersey — highest among states. Connecticut and Michigan followed, at $981 and $964, respectively. (Source: soon-to-be-released Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2003.)

$9,786Average income for people 65 and over in 2001 that came from Social Security payments. This compares with an average total income of $22,210.

BTW, Chas can go to the SS Administration and request the annual statement we all get – at any time. Even if he worked as a oung man, before he was exempt, it will be reflected on the report.

And please Chas, don’t take MY word for it, I don’t claim to be an expert. Personal finance is too important to take just any Tom, Dick, or Captains word for it.

SS administration is only a click away.

Also, do not underestimate the cost of insurance premiums and out-of-pocket costs. Hillary isn’t there yet.

To which, I replied to show me where I said 401K – today are federally funded. I yes, I also stated in my original post that it would cost 25 billion. You didn’t need a link for a PROPOSAL by Hillary. You wanted a link because you thought I said the program TODAY is federally funded.I never ever said that. And you already KNEW Hillary proposed to use billions to fund it and of course you knew it would be a federally funded program.

You try to confuse and mislead, instead of just admitting the truth.

Nice try, but you are no Christian and certainly NOT a minister of God. Because you lie.
