Keep kids in age-appropriate costumes

My memories of trick-or-treating are sweet and innocent — being sent to family friends’ houses in a pink princess dress with my aluminum-foil-wrapped spaceman brother.
Apparently, girls these days aren’t limited to homemade or even age-appropriate costumes. Stores feature adult-modified costumes of everything from little French maids to Britney Spears to "Red Hot," coming in sizes toddler to preteen.
While parents may find these costumes cute and innocuous, some thought should be given to the effect their daughter’s scanty "Devilicious" costume (in photo) is having on her concept of self-worth and body image.
Parents may not be able to stop the deluge of societal pressures on girls, but at the very least, they can help buy a few more years of innocence by not allowing sexy Halloween costumes.

Those costumes should be reserved for the moms only

I have the devil on one shoulder saying “yeah, that’s right, train ‘em young baby!!! make’m wh0res now so they will be more fun later” and an angel on the other saying “for the love of God, let’s protect and cherish the single most important aspect of our future…OUR WOMEN!”

The sluttification of young girls goes on. I don’t have a daughter, but I understand that finding plain old kids’ clothes for them is actually quite difficult.

    Ben, you sly dog, you.

While I’d never dress my kids in these costumes, I can’t say they’re any worse than the clothes that these kids are wearing every day. And a bikini shows more skin…so does it really matter?

I became very mad at my sibling, because when I was watching their middle school, and high school aged daughters, while folding laundry the underwear was pretty racey. At first I was like “oh, I see they are keepin it alive” because I assumed they belonged to my sister in law. So I put them in the parents pile, only to have the girls inform me those were theirs! It nearly gave me a nervous breakdown!

I held them as babies, wished the best for them, they should never think about such things until they are 30! I’m not talking Victorias Secret Stuff, these things were pure porno underwear!

It sure is a slap in the face. At the mall, you see the low rise jeans, barely clearing the butt crack and you can see the muscle tone of their abdomin, with the thong straps hanging out, and you can’t tell how old they are! It makes me glad I’m pushin 40, at least by that age range a guy can know he is safe…BY THE WAY, THE MOMMAS ARE WAY HOTTER THAN THEY USED TO BE AS WELL!!!! So I guess pop culture has some benefits!

If it were the older sisters…

I’d say HELL YEAH! Is this a great country or WHAT!

I think women should feel free to wear what they want to wear, well I guess teen girls should too. Those young girls need to realize, that if they are going to dress like eye candy, thats the way they are going to be looked at. If females don’t want to be looked at as a piece of meat, than wear some more cloths. But I guess its not a bad thing to show of the goods while you got them, seems like a lot of women let their selves go around 30. I’d much rather see older women in great shape, showing off their body, but I guess a lot of them can’t.

I just looked at the devil costume picture in this thread, I have to agree Kristen, its a little risque for young girls to be wearing. As always though it comes down to good parenting.

I think it’s a back lash to the women’s movement…just another way for young girls to be pressured into identifying themselves only by their sexuality, and therefore controlled according to the opinions of the men who judge them.As you can see by the posts above, there many men who will always look at young women only as sexual objects.

“I’d much rather see older women in great shape, showing off their body, but I guess a lot of them can’t.”
So WE, how good do YOU look in a speedo?

I’ve been walking 5-6 miles a day and don’t think I’ve lost a pound! Maybe if I gave up eating?

Oh no. Don’t blame this on the women’s movement. I’m part of it, and none of my kids nor my friend’s kids in the movement dress slutty. It’s always the christian kids. I think their parents must think it’s ok because their angels won’t ever put out, but they have to be able to land that great husband someday to support their little babymaker.

Think about it, I can name all the kids who dress all scantily in my daughter’s school. They’re the cheerleader, popular rich kids…usually with a religious background.

    Ben,

When is the last time you “ran” around for an hour non-stop, rolled on the ground while kicking your legs, jumped around the room for no apparent reason and generally left the fabric on the seat of your pants untouched by couch or recliner?

As we all get older, we tend to plan our day around our meals or try to.

Kids have no such plans and will do what suits them on the occasion.

Yep Kansas – you hit the nail on the head. Or, as my nurse puts it, EXERCISE! Those kids run non-stop; that of course is the reason. I’m just looking for an ‘excuse’! ;^)

Creating an age-appropriate room for your little one could be a very daunting task, especially when kids have a tendency to change at a rapid pace.
