Reactions have been swift and sharp to President Bush’s veto of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program expansion. Among the critics was Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan.: "I am extremely disappointed in the president’s veto of this bill. This is too bad, given what is at stake for our Kansas families. This legislation was a strong bipartisan compromise that nationally is expected to provide health care coverage to close to 4 million more low-income children who are currently uninsured. I urge my House colleagues to vote to override the president’s veto, and I stand ready with my colleagues in the Senate to do the same."
Among the critics of congressional Democrats was Rep. Todd Tiahrt, R-Goddard: "I am disappointed America’s low-income children must wait two more weeks before a resolution to this impasse can be reached. We could pass a bill tomorrow if the Democrat leadership truly wanted to provide health insurance to low-income children. Unfortunately, they have chosen to expand the program to include middle-income adults and illegal aliens."

“middle-income adults and illegal aliens.”"
Illegals? Is this true?
Roberts will say anything, he’s up for re-election, and unlike last time can’t be the bush point man, and throw caution to the wind!
Roberts needs to remember when he points his finger at bush, there’s three pointing back at him!
Thank God President Bush had sense enough to do the right thing, not the political thing.
This bill reeks with problems and hand-outs. Another “let’s pay American’s NOT to work and use their own benefits”.
Illegals? Is this true?
It’s more like the middle finger is being pointed at each other.
For those with the time and resources, the vetoed bill is H.R. 976 of the 110th Congress (I’ve neither), so that the reader may decide what it says.
House Republicans also said the bill would make it easier for illegal immigrants to enroll in Medicaid or SCHIP, chiefly because of a provision that would relax a provision of the 2006 budget law that required Medicaid applicants to prove their citizenship.
Grassley said the 2006 proof-of-citizenship law isn’t working well. “It is beyond question that the [law] has caused a bureaucratic nightmare for some states that is keeping Americans from getting coverage,” he wrote in a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Boehner.
As an example, according to Grassley, some poor parents are asked to prove their newborns’ citizenship when they are delivered at hospitals — even though all children born in the United States are automatically American citizens.
“The overheated and misleading rhetoric from opponents of this children’s health reauthorization bill is nothing more than a desperate attempt to divert your attention from voting for a children’s health bill,” Grassley wrote.
The bill the House passed would allow states to assume that Medicaid and SCHIP applicants are citizens by checking their Social Security numbers with the Social Security Administration. But SSA Secretary Michael J. Astrue has warned that such a system could not be relied upon to verify citizenship.

No, it isn’t true that the program includes illegal aliens. This is a lie Tiahrt is using as an excuse for walking lock-step with bush.
Rush says it; it must be true. Rush is GOD!
Here’s what Michelle Malkin has to say on the matter. A very bright investigative blogger.
http://michellemalkin.com/2007/09/25/shamnesty-watch-s-chip-loophole-new-health-care-benefits-for-illegal-aliens/
Bottom line is that checking the social security number of someone does not guarantee they did not enter the country illegally.
This means that all those illegal aliens using stolen SSAN’s and SSAN’s of dead people would get into yet another government program without even having citizenship status.
I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of paying welfare for the Country of Mexico.
Move on says it; it must be true. Move On is GOD!
Really? How cool!
I’m a member of move on. Guess that makes me a little piece of God. Now who gets the first bolt from the blue…
The march to socialism continues.
“Legislation was introduced by several members of Congress, such as Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.), Sen. John Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), and Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) that would expand SCHIP eligibility to children in families with incomes at 300 or even 400 percent above the federal poverty line which amounts to opening the program to families making annual incomes of $61,950 and $82,600 respectively.”
Libs: They only hurt the ones they love most.
“The Senate plan purports to pay for the expansion by adding 61 cents to the federal tax on cigarettes (per pack). However, cigarette taxes are proportionately a larger expense for poor smokers than for rich smokers. Also, smokers as a group are poorer than non-smokers.”
Imagine that. Another Lib program that will need to be bailed out.
“Senators have chosen a revenue source that is in decline and will decrease even faster if the tax rate rises. Due to the sensitivity of consumers to increases in the price of tobacco products (known as “price elasticity”), the average consumer purchases fewer cigarettes when the price increases. Consequently, the additional revenue generated from increasing the tax will decline over time”
Hey, I got an idea: Let’s take all the money we’re throwing down the drain in Iraq and use it for the SCHIP program. Imagine saving childrens lives instead of getting America’s finest killed in a war over some tinpot dictator whose ego was (memo to bush: sadaam’s dead.) only exceeded by shrub.
Say, whatever happened to Osamayomama anyway? Wasn’t the shrubster going to turn over heaven and hell until he found and executed him?
If osama and his minions ever deal another blow to this country, who are the 28%ers going to blame, Clinton?
I do not disagree with the schips program on principal, but I do disagree with the intended funding of it on principal, I can afford to pay more for cigarettes, but why should I. There is a non-existant linkage between smokers and uninsured children. Now if there were a Fat Tax@, there could be a linkage between healthier children who are uninsured.
Stumper – George W. Bush has stated that he does not even think about Bin Laden anymore. And then he wonders why there are only 28% support for him and his oil-rich cronies.
Lindainks55 – It expands the program to people earning 300% of the poverty limit – about $60K. That’s middle class and it includes the entire family. So that’s not a lie! It also says that citizenship can not be considered when considering benefits – so it does cover illegals – that’s not a lie! So where is the lie? Seems its only with you! But whats new?
Nice to see some clear differences between candidates. Betts wants to expand social programs and give handouts to illegals(as he has done in KS for 6 years). Tiahrt will fight budget increases and enforce the law. This thing could be over before it begins.
Tiahrt will fight budget increases and enforce the law. This thing could be over before it begins.

Since when is Tiarht for fighting budget increases? He went along with everyone of Bush’s spending bills for the entire 6 years of total Republican-controlled congress of Bush’s presidency.
And to enfore the law? Not when it comes to letting illegals in to please the Big Business insatiable appetite for cheap labor.
And that leftover money from the BTK investigation should have gone to fight the gang – no credit to Tiarht – that was his job to get the money. Why should I give him credit for doing what should be a part of his job?
Tiahrt again lies to the people because he knows they are stupid enough to believe him. Heck, they were stupid enough to elect him so he does have a point.
Fewer than 1 in 10 children whose parents make more than $41,000 would be covered in the plan. Tiahrt will piss on 90% of those eligible because of a small minority who happen to live in households with lots of children.
Illegal aliens won’t be covered by the SCHIP bill, that’s just a flat out lie.
Nice to know the ethical conservative Tiahrt will cover up a bad vote with lies. What a nice way to represent the people of Sedgwick County.
When all else fails, the conservatives will resort to LIES and by telling LIES over and over the LIES become the truth. Case in point:1. SCHIP will cover families making $82,000 a year. FACT: it will cover families living in high cost areas like NY that make $82,000 a year IF they have 6 children and IF the state applies to the Federal government for an exemption from the ceiling.2. SCHIP will cover adults 25 years old. It does not. It DID cover college students who don’t work. The new plan does not even do that. You have to be under 18.3. Iraq was responsible for 9-11, bought nuke stuff from Africa and has WMD. Nuff said.
maninthemiddle,
Did you read the link I provided? I’ll post it again here just in case you would like to be well informed.
http://www.cbpp.org/9-25-07health3.htm
I could find many others if The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities isn’t to your liking.
The final compromise legislation that bush vetoed does not cover illegal aliens as tiahrt stated. tiahrt is lying to cover his walking lock-step with bush with no good reason. And perhaps he hasn’t spent the time to become any more informed than you. I did send this same link to tiahrt today and told him at the next election maybe we could elect someone who would do their own work instead of me doing both theirs and mine.
The compromise legislation does not include a House-passed provision that would have given states an option to cover legal immigrant children and pregnant women during their first five years in the United States. Maybe tiahrt doesn’t pay attention to compromises.
If you believe only what you choose and ignore facts I suppose you will remain as ill-informed as bush and tiart.
That’s sad but it’s your choice.
IF you read “About us” on the website it is clearly one of the “Lefty website thinktanks” ie propagandists. The Rebpulicans have them as well. The Names of these things are made to give them credibility something liek “the DREAM ACT” who is against dreams? IT is leftist BS!
The act covers ALL CHILDRES regardLESS OF STATUS. That is the deal, ANMENSTY in small bites, contraty to the 80-90% that shut down the damn phone lines in the Senate, THREE TIMES!!!!!
http://www.cbpp.org/9-25-07health3.htm
Yeah it is really an unbiased website. Look at whom comments on “how great this site is”, none other thatn TADA leftist darling PAUL KRUGEMAN!
“”[The Center's] statistical work is absolutely impeccable; there is nothing at all like it on the right, or anywhere else. . . . If you care about [fiscal issues], check CBPP’s site regularly for updates.”
Paul Krugman, New York Times columnist,in a May 28, 2003 column on his website listingwebsites that are “must reading for anyone interested in government policy.”"
Paul Krugeman does not like anything right of socialism, and is against ANYTHING Republican regardless whether it is good for the country or not. This bill is too expensive with the deficit we have now, and it is another “Enticement” for ilelgal aliens to come here.
WHen the hell are we gonna stop giveing things away to get people to come here and get free things? AMERICANS ARE PAYING FOR THIS, that is WHY WE HAVE NO GOD DAMN MONEY FOR OUR OWN INSURANCE,we pay taxes TO GIVE ALL THIS TO ILLEGAL ALIENS.
But Republicans like illegal immigrants for Big Business to survive (yeah, like WalMart, Tyson Foods, Hormel are going to go broke).
My goodness…. Back in WW II, the rallying cry in Germany was something like: If we do this, we are just giving it away to the Jews…
NOW, the rallying cry here is, if we do this, we are just giving it away to the illegals….
I think those two sound tooo familiar for my liking!!
SCHIP is NOT for illegals!!! How many times does that need to be SAID??
And, how many times does it need to be posted here that ALL CHILDREN BORN HERE ARE AUTOMATICALLY AMERICAN CITIZENS!!
Can you Republicans pull your heads out of the sand long enough to at least get the LAWS straightened out????
Problem is, the right wing hasn’t actually got any solutions for the problems we face that haven’t already been tried and failed. They know that, but they can’t bear to relinquish power, so they have to find a scapegoat to divert attention from their own failures. They’ve been through a ton of scapegoats already; Jews, papists, unions, commies, pinkos, fellow-travelers, black people, hippies, gays, Arabs and now illegal aliens. They certainly believe in spreading the blame around! The one thing they absolutely cannot blame is their own reactionary ideology. None of the aforementioned groups has ever posed nearly as severe a problem to our nation as the right wing regressionism we’re seeing today.
They so firmly believe that everything was so much better in their daddy’s day, when they were on top and everybody else knew their place (or so they think), that they’ve failed to understand and deny the dynamic nature of our society. They end up being a sort of reverse Utopians; they want to take us back to the paradise of their fathers, which in this case is the Great Depression.
I don’t know about you, but I hardly consider that Eden. Maybe they would feel better if they all went to Utah and got depressed together, and left the rest of us to find solutions to the very real problems we face today. I doubt they will, since they seem so hell-bent on taking the rest of us with them to their Shangri-La of the thirties, but I can always hope!
