“I have heard the call,” Stephen Colbert announced this week. “Nation, I shall seek the office of the president of the United States.” Earlier this week, the Comedy Central star was coy about his aspirations in a commentary in the New York Times. “While my hat is not presently in the ring,” he wrote, “I should also point out that it is not on my head.” But Colbert also confided in his commentary how confused he is about the 2008 election. “For instance, Hillary Clinton,” he wrote. “I can’t remember if I’m supposed to be scared of her so Democrats will think they should nominate her when she’s actually easy to beat, or if I’m supposed to be scared of her because she’s legitimately scary.”

Colbert is kind of like a cross between Jim Carey and a “sit down” version of Lillian Tomlison.
I wonder if he practiced that stupid “deer in the headlights” look or is it hereditary? :)
Colbert’s “candidacy” is a right wingnut’s worst nightmare.
His schitck is carrying right wingnuts’ rhetoric to their natural consequences.
Colbert could do his show simply by reading Bill O’Reiley transcripts and he’d get the same laughs.
I think he borrowed the look from bush after bush learned he’d stolen the presidency.
Mr. Colbert, I served with Pat Paulsen. I knew Pat Paulsen. Pat Paulsen was a friend of mine. Sir, you’re no Pat Paulsen.
Ah ya’ll are such stick in the mud.
I’d vote for Colbert! Even if he is running as both a democrat and a republican in South Carolina lol.
Kansas do you even WATCH the Colbert Report?
Considering what we’ve gotten over the past several years, How bad would a Colbert presidency be? At least Colbert has a sense of humor. The race seems to be shaping up to be Hillary vs Rudy which means once again, we get to choose the lesser of 2 evils. I’m not at all sure which one that would be.
The presidential race is all about who can raise the most money, not who’s the best candidate. If we chose the best candidates, we’d be looking at Huckabee vs Dodd IMHO. Now there would be a race that would make this old Independent’s heart flutter!

Not really, although I pause in between changing channels to watch him for a few. He’s like the old Saturday Night Live Newsroom skits, nothing new there to see, so I move along.
Colbert frustrates the right because he shows them the shadow of themselves. His “over the top” parody of conservatives really isn’t over the top at all, it just scratches the surface.
We have a couple of posters who when I read their words, I hear Stephen Colbert. Joe used to get that designation. Lately it belongs to Max and Nathan.

Wrong again J R.
You assume too much.
Most people have never heard of Colbert and could care less about him.
You and other Libs need to stop assigning thoughts of other people and just use your own thoughts on the matter.
Ok. Sam is out…Colbert is in. Same joke.
A serious question – I recall when Pat Paulson ‘ran for president’ the equal time and fairness doctrine issues came up. It has today with Fred Thompson and Law/Order. Will this create a problem for Colbert and his TV show?
Ben the FCC doesn’t regulate Cable TV so dont think the fairness doctrine applys. I believe that NBC pulled the Thompson L&O’s but USA network wasn’t. NBC being over “public” airways USA over cable.
Thanks Tom …
Bothers you doesn’t it Kansas…Stephen Colbert, how he’s always so…right.
I just looked up the http://www.colbert08.org site, and it truly does have a petition- saying he’ll run on the democratic ticket.
Seeing that he PLAYS a hard core republican on TV, you have to wonder…if it is a joke..why wouldn’t he have run on the republican ticket?
“Joe used to get that designation. Lately it belongs to Max and Nathan.”
Huge difference — Colbert is at least humorous —- Max and Nathan are just wound a little too tight.
I will vote for him when he pronounces his name right. It is COLBERT REPORT- not the “colbear repor”
“why wouldn’t he have run on the republican ticket?”
He said on the show that he is running for nomination for both parties, as the “favored son canidate.” but only in s. c.
By the way Kansas, much different from Weekend Update (SNL), even the old seventies ones. They were more making fun of the news. Colbert’s usually making fun of the news reporters, at least the cable one. He is a living parody, always in charecter.

Maybe in your age group, but ask anyone thirty or younger, and you will get a different response. You will also find according to polls that those of us who watch Colbert and Steward have more knowledge of current events than those who watch fox news.

What poll would that be?
No news or polling firm has every asked me any question on anything.
I watch more CNN, MSNBC than I do Fox and I also watch PBS TV and listen to PBS radio.
I doubt very seriously that most people that watch Colbert are more up to date on news than I am. I read all the Web news and get news delivered to my email, including flash news reports.
Maybe you meant to say, they get more comedy oriented skewed news than adults who listen to real news. :)
Oh Kev please. He does that intentionally.

No thanks, I have no interest in either.
Kansas, surely being as educated as you are you know that a statistics don’t depend on one person. Just because you didn’t get called doesn’t mean all statistics are moot. Perhaps you get your news from all those sources, but many don’t. And studies show that those who get their news from comedy central are more educated on events then those who get it primarily from organizations such as fox news.
A sad statement about cable news, is it not.
But ofcourse, you mock what you don’t know. You admit that you haven’t watched either show in more than passing. Last week Steward intervied Lynn Cheney. It is an entertaining and intellectual interview. It had comedic elements, but it delved into the issues behind the war, ect. Stewart was more kind, but firm and fair in his interview than most network reporters.
Last week on Colbert, he intervied the international chess champion of the world, and a canidate for president in Russia. We had the oppurtunity to to listen to a discussion on Russian politics, and how dangerous it is for someone to run against Putin right now.
Comedy, yes. Entertaining, yes. Damn educational? Yes. Look at the list of guests, these people aren’t lightweights. Read the transcripts from the interviews. Both hosts use humor and irony to get to real points that other interviewers don’t.
My point, Kansas, don’t mock what you admit you have never watched. Your closed eyes stop you from seeing a force that is having a strong impact in our culture.
interviewed, not intervied. I am brilliant.
“”"Most people have never heard of Colbert and could care less about him.”"”
There are only 2 kinds of people who have not heard of Colbert: the DEAD and the DEAF.
Pat Paulsen was great!
A few of his classic lines:
All the problems we face in the United States today can be traced to an unenlightened immigration policy on the part of the American Indian.
When asked if he believed in the Right to bear arms: “No, I believe in the right to arm bears.”
Presidential Campaign Slogan: “I’ve upped my standards. Now, up yours.”
As I recall, last year the White Correspondent’s association hired Stephen Colbert to give its annual talk, not really knowing anything about him, but because they’d heard the “kids liked him.” Hehehe!
The awesome results:http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-869183917758574879
Oh, please, cons, continue to ignore Colbert! Please.
“”"Most people have never heard of Colbert and could care less about him.”"”
That’s why he was on “meet the press” this morning.
Saw Colbert on Tim Russert this morning (Disclaimer: CF2K usually NEVER watches the Sunday morning DC-circle jerk–this was an exception), and Colbert was lookin’ MIGHTY Presidential in a Fundo kinda way, what with that cold gleam in his eye, adn that ramrod-straight intolerance and race-to-the-bottom appeal to Mom, apple pie, and lynchings.
Mr. Colbert, your constituency awaits!
