Good for former President Jimmy Carter for getting in the face of Sudanese security personnel who said that he couldn’t visit a tribal leader in northern Darfur because it wasn’t “on the program,” according to Associated Press. The 83-year-old Carter angrily responded: “We’re going to anyway.”
While Carter argued, his group — which included British tycoon Richard Branson and the wife of former South African President Nelson Mandela — was swarmed by people who passed them notes detailing threats of arrest and torture by the Sudanese government if they told visiting delegations about their suffering.
Tension was already high in Darfur after rebels and militias overran an African Union peacekeeping base in northern Darfur last weekend, killing 10 AU soldiers.

It’s Sudan’s fault for not having oil. If they had oil then Bush would do something but for now they’ll get the North Korea/Myanmar treatment.
Jimmy Carter cannot do anything. He doesn’t care. He’s just a publicity hound.
Try saying the same thing without reporters and camera crews James?
At least he’s trying Joe. You’re the worst neocon out there, to not even give a damn about these people.

Yet another idiotic comment. Carter was not the best president we ever had (neither was he the unmitigated disaster some conservative republican partisans like to pretend he was). He deliberated too long on things and didn’t delegate enough. However, to assume that Carter is just a publicity hound is just absurd. Carter has done more than any ex-president to live his personal values.
Joe, if you can’t say something intelligent on a subject, don’t bother saying anything.
Gosh ksag,
With a qualification like that, you’ll shut up Joe for good. And he always brings us such a surreal take on things.
Good for Carter. Don’t expect the same from the country club Pres. Well not unless they find oil over there.

Heh, good one, JR!
“”"”With a qualification like that, you’ll shut up Joe for good. And he always brings us such a surreal take on things.”"”"
The last thing I want to do is shut up conservatives. The more they talk, the better Hillary and Obama look. What was that about “phony soldiers” on Limbaugh?
You guys need to stop dumping on Joe Williams. Remember, it’s not easy living in a truly Salvador Dali world! Lighten up, huh?
Actually, I think Joe makes thoughtful comments on occasions(most of which I don’t agree with). If I thought he was an irredeemable troll type, I wouldn’t have bothered.
An irredemable troll?
hehehheh. I can only say “fap fap fap” to THAT one….
Carter got a bad rap over the Iran hostage affar and may have been sidedswiped by the Canadians who got several American out. You may recall that US embassy staffers were “adopted”, given Canadian Passports (courtesy of the CIA who made them )and rotated “home” to Canada. When the Iranians found out they were duped, they cut off all realtions with Canada and there was no way they would negotiate with Carter thereafter. Although both Ottawa and Washington tried to keep the rescue secret, somehow it got leaked to the US press. Apparently the Iranians would have never know if it hadn’t shown up in the media. Methinks Carter got a bad mouthed and has been stuck with a blame not earned.
umm… AMEN!
Well! At least I have you people talking, about Carter rather than Darfur. Your eyes are off the ball, again.
That is what these dignitaries that go to places like Darfur, Iraq, Indonesia or where ever there is a crisis or disaster. It seems to be all about them and people speak about them.
My point is accurate and you guys are either denying it because of your blind loyalty and affiliation to your political party or you don’t see the big picture. Go ahead and attack me! It does nothing!
James Carter going over to Darfur hardly brings any attention to what is already happening there, with the exception that Carter was in Darfur. What is he going to do? Hand out food, bring refugees home with him? Get real people. We all know what needs to be done and that is the Sudanese government and the Janjaweed militia group needs to be eliminated.
Because this is a civil war between Muslims and Christians becoming now an ethnic cleansing genocide, it is something we do need to get involved in, and the Bush Administration does need to get involved.
The one thing I can say is that the United States and the Bush Administration has called it genocide, the United Nations has refused to call it a genocide, because that will compel them to enact under crisis. Instead! The United Nations has called it “a gross violation” of the Sudanese government.
Much like the Clinton Administration refused to call the Rwanda genocide a genocide, because they didn’t want to get involved.
But I’m afraid that nothing much is going to get done to help people return home or stop the killings in Darfur. Like Doug kind of said, that there is no oil or strategic value to Darfur for anybody, even the United Nations doesn’t really care that much. And to be quite honest, none of you people here don’t really care, other than scoring political points or a chance to label the Republicans or the Bush Administration as bad people.
Get real people. All you want to do is attack me? Get your heads out of your ass.
Just an observation – most of the comments on this page were about other bloggers, not the topic. But that appears to be the usual fare on this blog.
I thought the genius UN was handling the situation in Darfur.
Well gee Joe, why didn’t you say all that the first time?
It is clear you are outraged at what is going on in Darfur. That’s good. Everyone should be.
But you are pointing your partisanship accusation in the wrong direction,
Why bag on Carter? Why minimize what he is at least trying to do? Why declare him a media hound?
He brought attention to the situation didn’t he? He brought the weight of at least a former holder of the most powerful office on the planet. That’s no small thing.
You’re on the right side here Joe. In this case it happens you’re standing with Carter. Attack forward, not sideways.
I agree with Joe on this.
So Carter is so great HE brought attention to Darfur. Like the world doesn’t already know about it? Like the World doesn’t know how worthless the UN has been in addressing this?
What did Carter DO about it?
Why is the press portraying him like a hero now, when he failed to do anything positive with foreign or domestic policy as President 30 years ago?
He’s been frustrated ever since he lost that battle with the rabbit.
Attacking the messenger. Yeah, that’ll help.
Carter’s handling of the Iran fiasco was not helped by Ronald Reagan and Daddy Bush’s behind the scenes dealing in the situation. Let’s not forget that there were Republicans hands in that Iran mess also!
But in the global world, I think Jimmy Carter’s name carries much more credibility than George W. Bush’s.
One is known for peace and the other is known for war. Guess which one is which?
In a place like Darfur does Joe really think a few cameras are a bullet shield? They don’t work all that well in Iraq or Afghanistan (just ask any foreign correspondent), why the hell woul they work in Darfur Joe? Admit it, Carter has the guts to follow his convictions no matter what the hell hole.
How many american lives are you willing to spend on it?
Any way the nightmare in Darfur is kept in the worlds eye is a good thing. What ex-pres Carter is doing is what he has done since he left office: help take care of people who desperatly need it. The man has my thanks.
“WIFE OF FORMER SOUTH AFRICAN PRESIDENT NELSON MANDELA”
lol
WINNIE MADELLA!!!!!!!!!!
WINNIE MANDELLA WAS DIRECTLY INVOLVED IN NECLACING, OR THE TORTURE AND MURDER OF POLITICAL OPPONENTS BY PLACING A TIRE AROUND THEIR NECKS, POURING GASOLINE IN THE TIRE, AND LIGHTING THE TIRE ON FIRE!
Human rights?
Jimmy Carter?
Carter is an idiot.
Sometimes, a courageous idiot, but a useful idiot for America’s enemies just the same.
Oh put a sock over it Paul.
You don’t care about anything or anyone but your own wallet. I list folks like you among Americas biggest enemies. Tool.
OH you mean because he didn’t sell arms to Iran to release the hostages? Yeah those convictions on right and wrong really should be reviewed. I wonder if we could pay off Osama not to fly planes into our buildings anymore?
perhaps he’d like a nuke?
pmom and JR
So you two think that “neclacing” is OK?
You both think that a former President of the United States, who preaches about “Human Rights” should hang around with the brutal, unbalanced, torturing WINNIE MANDELLA?
Well, she tortured rival Black tribes, so I guess she is the PERFECT person to tell the Blacks in Northern Africa what to do, huh?
