Another example of how tough the challenge is in Iraq, and how progress can quickly reverse: The Sunni leader who had joined with American and Iraqi forces to fight al-Qaida in Anbar was killed by a bomb today. This is the same sheik President Bush met with during his recent trip to Iraq (see photo).

Freedom is on the march.
When they step up, we’ll step down.
The surge is working.
A timetable means surrender.
War is peace.
Oh, I forgot–fight them over there so we don’t have to fight them here . . .
Capn, you also forgot that, since by his new “local” stragety (sic) — aka empower Sunni sheiks locally to achieve a stable central government in the aggregate — Augustus Stupidus no longer believes democracy for a united Iraq is possible, then he must believe that the very best we can do in Iraq is to prevent some great human tragedy (an open civil war, as opposed to the low-level one that exists there now, which might erupt into a regional conflict, or worse).
Which of course allows one to point out, as did Sen. Webb yesterday, that the thing Augustus Stupidus is trying to prevent today is the very same thing many opposed to the initial invasions sought to prevent in March, 2003. Before the invasion.
So not only is war peace, but 2007 (war) is 2003 (not peace per se, but certainly not buying the rank enchilada known as Iraq either).
Still, I guess for Augustus Stupidus things very easily could be even worse. After all, he’d _like_ to take the country back to 1934 or so.
In that light, I guess being stuck on 2003 is probably the best outcome of his being stuck on stupid.
I wonder whether this was the action of the self-styled Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, or, given some earlier actions, the action of a Shia militia in anticipation of future events? It seems to bear a certain semblance to prior attacks on the Sunni sheiks who turned against the AQM folks, but in the longer term, would it not be advantageous for a Shi’ite militia to eliminate a possible roadblock to the Shia asserting control over Anbar, whether through a central governmental structure or a consolidation of territory?
They’re definately jockeying for position, which is inevitable.
The sector of the Iraqi economy having the greatest growth potental is ,unfortunately. probably the funeral Industry!
What a waste.
Bush will no doubt be touting the “Anbar Awakening”, as an example, wonder if this will put a wrinkle in his speech?
Phantom, I had the same thought. He has practiced and practiced and now this. Is it possible to ignore, is it possible to incorporate into the speech at this late hour? They must be busy at the White House, huh?

They don’t embalm in Iraq, nor do they lay in state. They’re wrapped in a rag and buried, or if they’re richer, put in a crude box.

You can bet that the Sheik’s tribesman will be delivering special packages to the Al Qaeda who did this.
In fact, the Al Qaeda should probably be keenly aware of how many digits they have currently by taking inventory as they will no longer have use of them in future.
WHAT?
There was progress in Iraq?????
I thought there was no progress, according to the left.
So how could anything stop or reverse now?
From an article about it:”Bush met Abu Risha and other tribal leaders during a highly symbolic trip to Anbar on September 3, where the American leader declared that improved security in the vast desert province was an example of what could happen elsewhere in Iraq.”
Whose bomb was it?
There’s your progress, Nathan. Good security, huh? Wanna tell that to the sheikh’s family?
Bush couldn’t adjust his speech making to take out the 18 words, he’ll probably still talk about how safe Anbar is.
His brother is next in line, hell who knows! Could have been anybodys bomb!
I wonder if he was killed BECAUSE he met with bush? Or maybe the shrubster looked into his eyes and saw his soul and didnt like what he saw?
Naaaaaw. He liked Putin, how could he not love this guy?
He might not be able to adjust his speech to any greater extent than to ADD the word progress 18 more times. Maybe if he wrinkles up his forehead just so he can look like someone who should be believed. Nah, we’ve seen the forehead wrinkles and heard the words and know they are empty and meaningless. Want to take wagers on how many times he messes up? Nah, that’s too easy!
I put my money on al-qaeda AND the meeting with Bush. Kind of like Viet Nam. Kids inoculated by US medics were mutilated or killed by the VC. Put a bad taste in your mouth the next time you saw a GI.
So al-qaeda knocks off anyone who meets with Bush. Strategy. Bet it works too.
the saviors of iraq offered the us govt this same deal 2 years ago and were rejected.
now it’s the latest progressive movement in iraq that will turn this bloody mess around.
Abdul Sattar Buzaigh al-Rishawi was a criminal and a warlord.
i’m sure bush will happily spin this into a show of the new found goodness in shithole iraq.
maybe the flags at the white house will be lowered to half staff to celebrate the death of a such a close pal who just happened to be a killer and a criminal too.
the photo reeks of hey look at me im the bush from across the ocean and this is my new found friend who looks kinda uncomfortable having his picture splashed across the media worldwide standing next to me.
bush tries to reduce the centuries of conflict in the middle east into one short photo op.
Abdul Sattar Buzaigh al-Rishawi knows his ass is grass after this photo oops

Care to explain that?

progress in shithole iraq is defined as arming tribes who were killing us last week.
next week they will be back to killing us again.
i’m sure people who will blow themselves up for their version of god are afraid of you ks and the rest of the neo con cons.
same ole crap, different week.
bush cons the us into leaving iraq to the next president thinking somehow he will be left blameless for the 3800 so far kids he has gotten killed is shitbox iraq.
Unseen in the picture is frat boy george bush slapping a target on the Sheik’s back.
Animal House Iraq Style
exile appears to have a fecal fetish as he likes using words associated with that a lot.
For a former “military” man, Kansas sure has problems with profanity.
Musta been a barrel of laughs in the barracks . . .
Care to explain that?

Littlejohn, if I could step in here…
Sometimes in Vietnam, accepting help from Americans could be a death sentence.
The UNit I was with became friendly with some kids who hung around the firebase. Their village was just a few miles away. They didn’t have a good source of water for drinking or for irrigation. A bunch of us spent a couple of days digging ditches from a nearby creek for irrigation and hand-dug a well at the village. The villagers invited us back the next day for a “feast” to celebrate.
When we got there, everybody was dead except one old man, and he was nearly beat to death. The VC left him alive so he could tell what happened when anybody had anything to do with Americans.
Actually, I heard of it spoken a lot and often in the military Capn.
However, in formal atmosphere, it is considered “conduct unbecoming” and not used.
I had no objections or no boundaries for private chatter amongst the troops when they were doing their work.
I always did tell them to keep their “radar up” as one Base Commander had a habit of sneaking into workplace and would drill someone directly into the nearest wall if he found them using profanity.
None of the troops that swore weren’t so hypocritical as to teach a Sunday School class though.
The ones that I did know that taught Sunday School and gave Bible lessons, never strayed from the straight and narrow as they knew they had to lead by example.
Officers don’t stay in barracks.
xxx-
I know that such things happened frequently. My question is why would it put a bad taste in yor mouth when you see a GI, instead of expressing rage at the VC for killing kids that had been inoculated against disease?
Oh man, XXX. I’m sorry that is in your memory banks. I cant imagine the kind of grief and rage you must have felt.
Bush is grinning like a banshee; and the sheik looks like he’s just seen one!
LittleJohn it is the message that Al-Qaeda is also trying to send.”The Americans can not protect you from us!”.
Sadly the same side of that coin has already worked well in Iraq.If the Americans had not invaded, your relatives would still be alive. We experence it here with the Police, where in reality the Police may not have been able to prevent it. They still get the blame instead of the criminals.
