Sunflower Electric Power Corp. officials can kill some of the time waiting for the state’s decision on an air-quality permit for a new coal-fired plant by kicking themselves: The company had such a permit in 2002 and let it lapse, thinking it would be a snap to get another, reported the Topeka Capital-Journal. Now, if the latest permit comes from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, it will be over the objections of hundreds of Kansans and of attorneys general from eight other states. At the Garden City hearing that preceded the 2002 green light, “I don’t think there was a soul from the public,” said Steve Miller, a Sunflower executive. “Timing is everything.”

Coal provides about half of the electric power in the United States. There is very little chance that this will change anytime soon.Water usage concerns me.I would also insist on clean burning technology, if it was my call.Global warming hype?We need the power. The Terrorists don’t control coal and are not financed by the use of coal.China is opening a new coal fired plant every week.
O, we do need the power, in fact we need a radically updated power grid. But we do not need more coal fired electrical generating plants.
Water is and will be the one thing we cannot afford to waste on this fiasco. This ain’t china, and, unless the noe-cons stage a successful revolution, it never will be. But china is finding out their lack of an effective environmental policiy is having a detrimental effect on global sales.
Hell no, we don’t need coal fired plants. They’re too environmentally unsound.
Wolfcreek baby! Throttle it up to full power.
“China is opening a new coal fired plant every week.”
The above should definitely guide our policies.
Okay, coal fired power plants are out. What is our plan to supply power to the country?
I assume nuclear power is out, also. Wind power would take a lot of windmills and many people do not want them in their backyards. Solar is expensive and unfortunately just does not work everywhere.
So just where do we go?
Wolfcreek? Wasn’t that the nuclear facility that was going to cut costs by providing so much power but actually resulted in Wichita rate-payers footing some of the highest electric bills in the country?
Yeah, that sounds like a Joe Williamsism . . .
Hud–
Ohmygosh, PANIC!
How about conservation: insulation, LED lighting, recycling, better building practices?
Duh.
Steve Miller is used to having his way out here. And Topeka? What, ME worry? Must be miller’s mantra. I mean, when the GOVERNOR is bought and paid for, why should HE worry about a little thing like permits?
This is gonna get approved. You just wait and see…
Let’s just get the power plant built and bring some economic activity to Kansas. Make sure they have the latest EPA gismo’s on their operation and git er done. All this grand standing to protect trees and frogs is ridiculous and costly. More costly probably than the meeting the EPA standards.
Hell, let’s build the plant in Mexico and we don’t have to worry ’bout pollutin’, they’ll never know the difference. Just run the transmission lines up north, and just think of the money saved. Good ‘Merican business savy, huh?
“All this grand standing to protect trees and frogs is ridiculous and costly.”
Uh, trees and frogs?
Is there some part of water and clean air you dont understand?
How about protecting HUMANS for a change?
Jesus WEPT. You deserve to live in kansas…
Wind, solar, nuclear … all of these must be in the mix.
Is there some part of water and clean air you dont understand? How about protecting HUMANS for a change?
You obviously do not understand that my mention of the two meant anyone putting environment concerns over economic activity to the point of the absurd.
If you have half a brain, you will see that I mentioned ensuring the power plants meet EPA standards. What more can you expect from them? Just saying “go away” and “not in my backyard” are ignorant positions.
“For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.”
OMG. Heheh. HEE HEE. HEHEHEHEHEH. HAHAHAHAHHAHAAHAHAHAHAH!!!!
What’s up with the bible quote? Telling, very telling.
And no, we cant read your mind. Trees and frogs? And we are supposed to infer from that you are an environmentalist?
Heheheheheheheheheheheheheheeheh…
Damn, you funny. Keep it up. I need more laughs today.
Oh, and the EPA, under bushco? Your own Christy Todd Witman thinks it’s a joke.
Got a bible verse for her too? Some extremely bigoted verse about women? Given the nature of your bible, it shouldnt be too hard…
But thanks for showing your ever so chritianist ass. I am sure we are all uplifted and led to christ by your comments…

At least it’s not a fat one. And I am just as uplifted by your making fun of the bible in your post.
Look in a mirror lately?

You arent worth the energy it takes to flame you. But like most christianist conservatives asses, if you have nothing to say about substance, then you go to appearances?
heh. hehehhe. hee hee. HEHEHEHEHEH.HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA….
Please continue. We are amused, and we do encourage you to show your christianist ass again.
Or maybe still….
It is easy to criticize. So what is the answer? You do not want coal, you do not want nuclear and communities are fighting against the wind turbines all over the state.
So what is your solution?
heh. hehehhe. hee hee. HEHEHEHEHEH.HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA….

Sounds as shrill as Hillary. I’ll add ksfarmgrrl to my list.
I don’t think I ever posted that I am a Christian. I just captured some verse off the net and stuck it at the bottom of my post – even though it doesn’t mean anything or have anything to do with the content of my post.
In fact, I am actually a scrooge. Is that a religion affiliated with being a Christian? Maybe something else entirely.
It’s not nice to mock God.
Jesus Wept
So you just happened to post that verse to me?
heh. Hee hee. HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA. HEE HEE HEE HEE HEE HEEEEEEEE!
“you do not want nuclear and communities are fighting against the wind turbines all over the state.”
Please post where I said any of those things.
Dumbass. Looks like another fun day on the blog with trolls and sock puppets. Y’all have fun with cheetos boy and his merry band of christianists.
And do remember, he represents christ, even if he is trying to backpeddle now…

Time for a change is right. (and what’s up with this farm girl thinking everyone is responding to her?)
The only solution I see from those opposed to creating more energy plants is to revert to the stone age.
“It is easy to criticize.”
I’m thinking it’s beyond being critical. Many are running around crying “the sky is falling” (Cosmos/Palm Trees for Sale) but I am not hearing rationale on what the alternative is. If Kansas doesn’t built the coal plant some other state will get the business. The “business” is jobs, big tax dollars, and an electricity. They argue against it for the environmental reasons, but if that argrument keeps up, we will be like California and suffer brown outs, huge energy costs, and worse.
Build the plant to strict standards. Work with industry to make it happen right, not against them.
I’m certainly no expert on this matter, but as I understand it, this electricity is being produced to send to Colorado. If they have that need, why is it being considered to be built in Knasas? Do the people in Colorado know something we don’t, or is that an oversimplification?

Same reason Sedgwick county decided to dump all their garbage in Harper county, after spending millions on land near Furley—Typical American attitude—NOT IN MY BACK YARD!
I am sure that Cosmos does not drive an automobile or heat his home in the winter. He probably probably grows his own fruits and vegetables in his back yard. His carbon footprint is probably a model for us all. Too bad he has not shared any of his earth saving tips with us.
“…it will be over the objections of hundreds of Kansans and of attorneys general from eight other states.”
CORRECTION: Should read “over the objections of dozens of Kansans” [the editors]
“Do the people in Colorado know something we don’t, or is that an oversimplification?”
Yes, gster, they do know something we refuse to see. They get to use the water while it is in their state, and then they get another crack at it when it reaches southwest kansas. Double dipping. All the benefits, none of the pain.
And Kansas? ALL the pain and the “benefits” of a handful of permanent local jobs.
And of course, sunflower already owned this governor. They probably didnt want to start all over in colorado…
Fleetie, let’s see if you are as quick with the research as you are that mouth of yours.

Ten, Twenty, what’s your point? KDHE followed proper procedures and held a public hearing. After the hearing KDHE decided not to go with the few protesters.
Had there been one protester, the whole thing should be dropped? Had there been one thousand protesters, KDHE was obligated to make their decision based upon that?

Just WHO is mocking God, JC?
Jesus Wept
I don’t know exactly why posters are adding this line. Either they are mocking Christians, or trying to indicate the subject is one that would make Jesus cry.
Either way, maybe they should know why Jesus wept in the bible story. It was because of the people’s unbelief. It wasn’t because he was sad about someone dying. (He believed and knew he could resurrect them.) It was because the people did not believe and were not following God’s Word.
JC may type the phrase to show JC’s belief that God would not approve, or to condemn liberal unbelievers.
Farmgirl uses it to make fun or mock christians of the religious right.
Both may not realize it, but their mocking is offensive to some Christians neither side of the fence.
So they offend many they do not intend to offend.
Coal is not only dirty (and there is NO SUCH THING as “clean coal”!: even the industry admits its 10 years away at best!), but it is expensive. With the new air regulations coming down the pike, coal is the stupidest thing you could possibly build. With the problems with climate change, it already is. Go with wind and gas as a backup. Wind works.
Coal is our nations largest carbon natural resource. We will use it before we give up our cars to environmentalists.
The only wind that’s going to power my car is your hot air and even though there is a large quantity of that – it is not enough.
If you want power from new coal-fired plants, then you want your utility bills to be higher.
New coal plants cost more than higher efficiency and renewables, especially when future carbon taxes are added.
‘Carbon Risk, Coal, and Higher Electricity Prices
Why coal-generated electricity will cost more than utilities claim’http://www.ucsusa.org/clean_energy/fossil_fuels/carbon_risk.html
Wise utilities are cancelling the coal-fired plants they earlier proposed, and are instead going with efficiency, and renewables.
Ksfrmgrrl,Dogbertious, as well as amazing grace, reverend, windworks, etc., are all the same sockpuppet, i.e., whatever, also known as kansas, republican, republikahn, etc.. His multiple personalities are examples of a moronic mind simplified by a total lack of reasoning ability. Walk on by.
cosmos,
What do you mean by comparing coal to “higher efficiency”. Higher efficiency what? Higher efficiency coal plants? What renewables do you have in mind? do you support Nuke Power?
I guess Natural Gas isn’t the answer for lower utility bills, huh?

Same bet to you Stumper. $5000.00 on the line if I’m any of those other posters that posted today other that what I have posted as before.
I’ll split the $5000.00 with Phillip Brownlee so he can look up the MAC ID of my router and compare it to the posters that post it today.
You Liberal tinfoil hats are quite laughable attributing every troll post to me.
(bawk, bawk, bawk)
rfl,
Sorry for the confusion, I thought it was obvious by the context — “higher efficiency” = use less energy.
Some examples here,
‘Energy efficiency’http://www.rmi.org/sitepages/pid113.php
Better alternatives to big, expensive centralized power plants,
http://www.smallisprofitable.org/ExecutiveSummary.html“This book describes 207 ways in which the size of “electrical resources” — devices that make, save, or store electricity — affects their economic value. It finds that properly considering the economic benefits of “distributed” (decentralized) electrical resources typically raises their value by a large factor, often approximately tenfold, by improving system planning, utility construction and operation (especially of the grid), and service quality, and by avoiding societal costs.”
‘207 Benefits of Distributed Resources’http://www.smallisprofitable.org/207Benefits.html
“His multiple personalities are examples of a moronic mind simplified by a total lack of reasoning ability. Walk on by.”
Hell, whatever, why cherry pick. Add the rest of my post. And just why in the hell would I bet on a loser, such as, well, yourself?
And does it matter which one of you neo-cons posted under a troll name? You’re all from the same mold anyway: bushbots inc., made in china (using too much lead paint in the process).
Lemeno if anyone takes the bet. Make sure the money is deposited safely with Mr. Brownlee, and then let me know when to post.
I’d love to help you collect.
stumper,
bawk, bawk, bawk…
I’m here now, check my post against Mr. Kansas.
You see I think the real problem here is a bunch of local yokel libs living near witchytaw, think they own the blog. And anyone else posting is suspect. They think less of others. Instead of just responding to my posts, you have to try to demean. And out of fear, you cannot fathom there actually are other conservatives or anyone other than a liberal democrat out there.
Here is your chance.
Take the bet.
“After the hearing KDHE decided not to go with the few protesters”
Uh, dumbass? NO decision has been issued, so KDHE had NOT decided to go with the “few” protesters.
Still no link to the number of protests filed? Just as I thought. All hat, no cattle. All wind, no facts.
Oh, and smart boy? How much in TAX money will the coal fired plant pay locally and to the state?
(Hint: It’s in the proposal from Sunflower…)
OH and Phillip?
Arent you SO glad the blog never banned the troll?
I mean, he has elevated your blog to, um, sock puppet land.
Dont say we never told ya so…

You are assuming that the trolls are me, which they are not.
Sad that you are gullible and accusatory without proof.
Yeah kansas republican. You cackled, now you gotta lay, as my Dad used to say.
You said you could trace posters.
Waiting. Why do YOU need $5000 to prove your own bullshit? YOU said it takes legwork.
Whatelse are you doing with your time while you await your welfare check?
“Whatelse are you doing with your time while you await your welfare check?”
There is absolutely no reason to make fun of a large part of the democrat base. Stop it.
I hardly think kansas republican is a large part of the democratic base.
You got nothing.
