The groups behind an anti-immigration billboard in Topeka asking “Had Enough?” got an answer of sorts. Within a day, vandals added the words “of racism” to the question, painted a swastika over the American flag and added the phrase “fight fascism.” All of which prompted the sign company to remove the billboard, and Ed Hayes, the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps state director, to say, “Criminal charges will be pursued and a reward is being offered for the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators in this matter.”

“The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls.” – Simon & Garfunkel.
SINCE WHEN IS IT RACIST TO ENFORCE THE LAW?
I wonder what part of “illegal aliens” people do not understand.
Sinclair Lewis once said, “When Facism comes to America it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross.”
He wrote that 60 or 70 years ago… How right he was…
The only-est reason there are “illegal aliens” is that people in this country hire them.
Enforce exisiting laws against hiring undocumented aliens and the problem will be solved. Or else, the Wal-Mart Board of Directors will have to hold their meetings in the Leavenworth Penitentiary cafeteria.
The “conservatives’” anti-immigrant issue is a politically-correct attempt to make race a viable issue.
Poor, brown, Spanish-speaking people come to the United States for only one reason: because they know white Republic Party contributors will hire them.
But just how many managers of feed lots, meat processors, Olathe Boot, Kansas City Salad, et al are cooling their heels in the pokey for hiring undocumented aliens? Here’s a clue: None.
George WMD Bush himself has admitted that his economic model for America depends on sub-standard wages for brown Spanish-speaking people.
The alternative is to pay a wage to workers that’ll attract workers… even if you’ll have to pay a nickle more for a Big Mac.
Punish those who hire workers illegally and you’ll eliminate the problem of illegal workers.
Ah, but that’s not how the Republic Party works these days. They’d rather punish the vicitms of illegal hiring.
Because the victims are brown and speak Spanish.
Rhonda Holman is horribly mistaken when she refers to “… a pro-immigrant point.” I’m not particularly an advocate of the “pro-immigrant point,” but I insist on pro-worker employment. You know, the traditional ideals of capitalism, where labor and capital *both* benefit from free enterprise.
Ah, but it’s way too easy to corrupt capitalism when you can demonize brown people whose first language is Spanish. There are always plenty of Republic Party faithful who’ll vote their racism as long as capitalists can flout the law.
Anyone in this country to stay needs to learn English at their own cost. The govt. estimates it would cost 2.9 billion for the govt. to do it, but it is not their responisiblity. For saying this, some idiots will brand me racist. If I move to Mexico, I would be expected to learn Mexican at my own cost. That is a reasonable expectation on Mexico’s part and it is a reasonable expectation here. At least here a nonnative citizen can get a govt. job. President Fox passed a law where you have been a native citizen of Mexico to get almost any govt. job, even as lowly as dog catcher. That may not be racist, and it is something that we should consider.
It is not about punishing the brown people, it is about obeying the law. The Democrats were supporting the same bad laws as the Republicans. Forcing employers to pay minimum wage and not hire illegals will solve the problem.
Look at it this way. By the time the Republicans and Democrats finish screwing up the country, the best paying jobs will be in Mexico and Americans will be sneaking across their border.
Long Time
I usually try to engage people intellectually, on this Blog.
However, you just put forth a bunch of partisan crap.
BOTH parties have plenty of blame where the illegal alien issue is concerned.
HOWEVER, most of the fault lies with the jerks, on this Blog and elswhere, who call law enforcement “racist.”
In Quebec, it is illegal to answer any business phone in any language other than French.
This is, perhaps, a warning of things to come for us, and an indication of what might happen if we don’t slow things down, and allow current immigrants to become Americanized before allowing more into the country.
In Mexico, the Guatemalan border is heavily guarded.
Those who cross the boarder between Mexico and Central American are treated terribly by the Mexican government.
Also, one of the strongest reasons for fighting illegal immigration is that these people should stay in Mexico in order to force change in Mexico.
Mexico is a failure.
This is purely a Mexican Government failure which must be fixed by the Mexican people.
I think part of the problem lies withing Rhonda’s own wording….anti-immigration.
It’s ANTI- ILLEGAL Immigration.
The problem also lies with many of these groups that do sound downright racist.
Those of us against illegal immigration are not against the people of Mexico, their color, or anything of the sort. It is about political differences, tired of losing our jobs, tired of illegals acting as if they have a right to be here and do whatever they want.
Mexico has vast resources and if its political system was not so corrupt, it would be one of the richer countries in the world.
Its people need to make it better, and Americans need to make America better. The petty and not so petty bickering only serves to keep those in power in power. How many dont vote because they think their vote doesnt count? If you dont vote, you shouldnt be upset when bad stuff happens since your vote could have been the one that changed the election. Not voting telling the powers that be that your are happy with what they are doing. Complaining about it on a blog is not going to accomplish antyhing. Tell your elected officials how you stand on issues. Call them, email them, write them letters, meet with them, stage peaceful demonstrations, contact the media, write letters to the editors, and urge your friends, neighbors, and relatives to do the same. We got rid of Glickman, we can get rid of Tiahrt, but only if you vote instead of just gritching about it. What would happen if every, or almost every, Democrat got out and voted? Or every Republican? The makeup in Topeka, DC and locally could change dramatically.
Vote for the person, not the party.
political_mom illegals also keep down incomes since they work for sub-minimum wage. Forcing employers to pay minimum wage and checking on illegal status should be priorities. I have yet to see a good immigration policy come out of Congress or the White House. Maybe next year when the Congressional races heat it up, we will.
I look for a challenge of ballets in states with heavy Hispanic populations. It will be the next culture war.
Kansas some states already have ballots in non English form.
ballet????????????
There is “hispanic ballet”?
That’s pretty low to challenge classical dancers!
Get a life TROLL!
“In Quebec, it is illegal to answer any business phone in any language other than French.”
Interesting. When I was in Quebec a year ago they answered for me in perfect English.
kansas – I am in agreement with you – ballots should be English. Back when I first registered to vote I had to pass a literacy test; we should require that today.

Sounds great but wont you disenfrancise thousands of rednecks or is that the plan no Electoral votes from Mississippi and Alabama
BenThis is what Bombardier says anyway
see no name, this is why I can’t really take you seriously.
I can’t name a single illegal immigrant who makes less than min. wage. What they do, however, is work for far less than what the job is actually worth. Remember, my family was directly impacted by this at one time when my mother’s job at a chicken plant was bought out by a national chain, who then brought in illegals by the truckloads.

Ben, the above are not directly on point, but they all show that Quebec is far more intollerant of Anglos than anything we are doing.
Montreal may have additional laws on the books, locally.
My understanding is that the phone must be answered in French. Then, if the person calling wishes to do business in another language, that is acceptable.
Oh,And the author, from the American Spectator, has not been remotely challenged on ANY of his facts.
I never said ALL Asians were “bad” Doug.
I said that the Democrats and the Clintons have an old habit of raising illegal Asian money.
whoops, the above posted to the wrong thread lol (The Spectator comment)
Tom – actually my plan is to disenfranchise lawyers!
Econ – Montreal was one of the cities I visited. And I don’t speak French.
I can’t name a single illegal immigrant who makes less than min. wage.
Try field hands working in places like California, sugar workers in Florida, and other migrant worker jobs. These people do not get minimum wage and are usually illegals. It is hard work and worth a lot more than minimum wage. There used to be some media coverage of this issue, but I havent seen any in a while. I remember 60 Minutes type show, the Florida workers were from the Caribbean areas, and the housing their employers put them in reminded me of slum lord housing. Actually, slum lord housing would have been like mansions compared to those hellholes.
Meat packing plants, like IBP, pay above minimum wage and are not always caring about who they hire. They get tax breaks for hiring minorities so they can pay them above minimum wage and the govt. offsets the salary. It used to be half, back when I checked into a long time ago.
On Quebec, the language on the storefronts have to be in French. If English is included, the French has to be twice as big and the English needs to follow French language conventions for most businesses. They even have around 50 language police to ensure the law is enforced. Quebec routinely tries for a secession vote, but has yet to gain enough support to win.
BenMy point is that Quebec and the rest of Canada have some huge frictions between them.
Do you deny that point?
My point is also that Quebec does not WISH to be “multicultural” and trys hard to stamp out English in its official offices.
I am sure that there are exceptions.
However, as my posts, upthread, indicate, the law IS in flux, with the legislatures, local governments and the Canadian Courts all making changes lately.
Quebec officially intolerant of English.
The law, itself, is changing.
Ben, you dont have to speak French, but it helps. My friend in Montreal does not speak French and does okay. Many businesses use English as well as French since most of Canada does not speak French and most American tourists do not either. I was in Finland several years ago, and most of the areas where American or other English speaking tourists would go have English speaking staff as well as Russian speaking staff since they had a large Russian tourist crowd.
Econ – on that point we agree. I think that there are ELEMENTS there who wish to stamp out english. But I don’t think they are a majority.
Fear. We’ll always fear those that look, speak, dress, or pray differently than us. That is until we marry their sister.
A poor way to make the point? Sorry, but racism has to be fought whenever and wherever it crops up!
JedIt is NOT racist to oppose ILLEGAL immigration.
Many Latinos do not like illegal immigration.
Just exactly how are they being racist?
Rhonda is a clueless idiot and WE HAVE TOLD YOU THOUSANDS OF TIMES;
WE ARE NOT AGAINST IMMIGRANTS,
WE OPPOSE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS!!!
GOOD LORD RHONDA
you are supposed to be educated, but on this issues you are ignorant and plain stupid to boot.
The billboard was opposing ILLEGAL immigration.
Take that you “non reporter” and “anti journalist”.
No wonder you work for the WE, you do not know what consititues public opinion and fact. WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING ON THE EDITORIAL BOARD????
“When Facism comes to America it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross.”
Wow…how true! Mr Lewis was right on target.
Senate AgJOBS Fight Expected on Farm BillIn July, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) promised to try to include the AgJOBS amnesty for illegal farm workers in the farm bill (H.R. 2419) when the Senate takes up that measure, which should occur some time this month. Pro-amnesty advocacy groups are telling their members that Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) have promised them that the AgJOBS amnesty will be attached to the measure this fall and will be signed into law.
This shows a complete disregard for the opinions of a majority of their constituents and for the legal workforce that is the backbone of this economy. I am disgusted that they would stoop so low to appease the cheap-labor lobby and open-borders crowd.
Make no mistake about it; this is an amnesty – and an unnecessary one at that! Any program that allows illegal aliens to live and work here on a permanent basis is an amnesty.
The AgJOBS amnesty is just as anti-worker and anti-sovereignty as the defeated “grand bargain”. The only differences between this amnesty and the defeated plan are
· Its size, and
· The attempt to sneak it through by attaching it to another bill instead of debating it out in the open where it would surely lose.
Furthermore, there is no need to grant amnesty to an illegal agricultural workforce. The CURRENT H-2A program provides unlimited legal workers to growers. There is simply no excuse for not taking advantage of that program. Growers who refuse to do so are either “too lazy” to do the paperwork or have an aversion to paying the almost-decent wages that the H-2A program requires.
I am surprised that we have to wage this fight again so soon after the defeat of the amnesty in June, but if the PRO AMNESTY supporters in the US SENATE and House of Represenitives are determined to supporting a scheme to give amnesty to illegal workers under the guise of providing more agricultural workers, we will have to stand up and oppose them again.
Please Call, FAX WRITE your Senators and US House Representatives to let them know that you oppose this attempt to SNEAK this by working Americans.!!
Pall,Of course it’s racist! You set up a series of next-to-impossible roadblocks to legal immigration aimed primarily at brown or black people, and when they come anyway, you scream “ILLEGAL!” Maybe you haven’t figured out that Hispanics are human beings endowed by their creator with the same inalienable rights you claim for yourself.
JedIs every other country in the world “racist”??
The word can not be used in a complete vaccuum.
Jed, name me another country that is open about Immigration as the United States, would you please?
Every other country in the world does a better job protecting its borders than the United States.
However, if the United States protected our border with Mexico with the same rigor with which Mexico enforced ITS border with Guatamala, you would call the US racist?
Is Mexico “racist” for guarding the SOUTHERN border of Mexico?
Pall,You’re trying hard to muddy the water here by confusing issues of immigration with issues of security. You seem to prefer not to notice that the terms “illegal” and “wetback” and “beaner” have come to mean anyone of Hispanic heritage, especially those who dare to speak Spanish in public, regardless of their citizenship or immigration status. Given that we’re all descendants of immigrants, this xenophobic hatred is particularly unbecoming to the people of this country. As for all those other countries, aren’t we the ones who should lead the way, set an example?I of course would prefer to solve illegal immigration problems by doing away with quotas and all that unnecessary red tape that discourages legal immigration. What currently takes 10yrs and $10K could be done quite adequately in 3-4 mos for $2-300. Let the free market govern immigration. You like the free market, don’t you?

Senator Brownback— Where are YOU????
Senator Brownback,
We are extremely disappointed you have NOT CHOSEN to LEAD in this fight.
The people who elected you need for you to stand up and be counted on as OPPOSING AMNESTY in ALL FORMS.
While I think the DREAM act has good intentions, it still gives AMNESTY to ILLEGAL aliens.
We need to put stricter conditions on who is granted AMNESTY among with the numbers being quoted.
We see this as a means to SNEAK AMNESTY FOR MILLIONS BY THE AMERICAN PUBLIC,
LIKE WE ARE STUPID??????
Please do not vote for a dream act that allows millions on additional people to qualify. The young ILLEGALS can use the newly acquired status to seek green cards for the parents who brought them here illegally in the first place.
We need to secure our borders, place HUGE PENALTIES ON EMPLOYERS WHO HIRE ILLEGALS.
THEN AND ONLY THEN IS IT TIME TO ADDRESS THE REMAINING ILLEGALS.
If we do it now, we will be addressing these same issues again, only instead of 21 years; we will be doing it in 5-10 years.
Please insist on enforcement before you approve amnesty for those who have invaded our country.
We are looking forward to your support!!
Please make a commitment to support working Kansans by OPPOSING THIS AMNESTY NOW.
On September 27, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) announced that the DREAM Act would not be considered as an amendment to H.R. 1585, the Defense Department authorization bill for fiscal year 2008.
The Washington Times reports, however, that Reid will push for passage of the DREAM Act, which would grant amnesty to millions of illegal aliens, by different means (possibly in its stand-alone form [S. 774, sponsored by Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin {D-Ill.}]) before the Senate adjourns for the year (i.e., on or about November 16).
Reid’s concession on the DoD authorization bill may doom other immigration-related amendments to the defense bill as well.
Please fax your senators: We have stopped the DREAM Act for now, but there is already a push to pass it as a stand-alone bill.
