Iowa is a godly place and all, but . . .

What was New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson thinking in linking God to Iowa’s first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses? (Or maybe he just mixed up the pages of his heartland talking points.) Drawing snickers, he said at a Sioux City labor picnic Monday: “Iowa, for good reason, for constitutional reasons, for reasons related to the Lord, should be the first caucus and primary. And I want you to know who was the first candidate to sign a pledge not to campaign anywhere if they got ahead of Iowa. It was Bill Richardson.”

Politicians pandering to Iowa and New Hampshire. Nothing new. It’s time for the other 48 states to stop putting up with it. Those two have had their turn, abundantly, excessively, nauseatingly. Why does each candidate make 50 visits to Iowa and none or one to Kansas? It isn’t because of God; it’s because of the political calendar. Richardson probably had his tongue in cheek, but he illustrates a ridiculous reality in our system. It’s like if Kansas selected its governor candidates by first having a primary just in Bel Aire. The two candidates who emerged strongest from Bel Aire would then get to campaign statewide for election.

Actually! We should just get rid of this Presidential Beauty contest. It serves us badly.

    My idea from yesterday:

‘I now know the BEST way to elect the next President of the US:

All of the candidates will be put on an island. Each week they will be given various tasks and competitions like spelling, balancing a budget, diffussing an international crisis, playing Risk, staring down bad guys, etc.

Then, the phone lines will be open and the people will get to vote one or two off. The last one remaining will be the President.

What a great way to increase voter turnout, increase citizen involvment in the political process, and help ensure our leader is competent to do the job.

I am going to phone ABC now.

Maybe Mr. Bill was right…just another Idiot Out Wandering Around.

Seems appropriate for the first of the caucuses.

If this had been a Republican quote, the anti-religious bigots would have been all over the candidate. He would have been called a Dominionist, a bigot, anti-gay and whatever other scorn their little minds could envision.

What I see is a somewhat clumsy tongue in cheek remark.

One thing I like about small states like NH and IA starting the parade is that it gives a small grassroots campaign a chance to make an impression. If you only use large states you eliminate dark horses from the start.

    Brian,

As fun and entertaining as your idea sounds, it is flawed in one regard.

Many times if not nearly all the time the winner of those events is the most manipulative one.

***************I can’t stand any of the Republicans, and I am VERY annoyed with this quote. For the life of me I can’t figure out what the “Lord” has to do with the primary in Iowa. It is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.
