Polls show Hillary Clinton with a comfortable double-digit lead on Barack Obama at the moment, but polls don’t mean a lot at this point. Obama could have an edge in the nomination fight if black voters move decisively behind him, according to a Newsweek article.
“Even though polls show that blacks still have doubts about Obama, he weathered similar skepticism in the 2004 Illinois Senate primary before winning nearly all of their votes. ‘He soared with elites initially,’ says Mark Blumenthal, who polled for Obama’s chief rival. ‘But it took until the last week of the campaign for blacks to decide.’ If they break his way again, says Blumenthal, Obama could ride a new black-upscale majority to the nomination.”

They are BOTH US Senators. They BOTH have a huge problem:
The Democrat base!
They can’t do what the base wants, because, deap down, they both know that their base is nuts.
They will both be expected, by the base, to vote for stupid things and enact stupid legislation that won’t pass anyway, at least not against a Bush veto.
To be “Anti-Bush” is easy. There are a thousand different variaties of that rose.
The bloom will be off nearly all of them, by election day, both primary and general.
Rarely does this country elect a sitting Senator to be President.
President Kerry?President Gore?President Dole?
Too much baggage.
Clinton and Obama must twist themselves into pretzels, trying to appeal to the left without actually doing anything harmful.
The economy will be strong, we will be seeing real results in Iraq and elsewhere, in the war on terror, and —-
Well, George W. is NOT running!
“The economy will be strong…”
Subprime housing market, anyone?
The thing is, the economy won’t be strong come election time. And the economy hasn’t benefited anyone but the fat cats for a long time.
George may not be running, but he’s managed to befoul every republican who IS running.
“The economy will be strong, we will be seeing real results in Iraq and elsewhere, in the war on terror, and —-”
Iraq will be worse the second we pull “the surge” out of there and we cannot afford to keep 160,000 troops there forever. Even Basra which was “pacified” when the Brits were there is getting hot now because the Brits are leaving. I could cut the high crime rate in Detroit if you gave me 3 cops to put on every block 24/7 there. The question is what would happen when the cops leave. The fact is that these people have beefs the predate even the creation of the USA and there is nothing the USA is going to be able to do to keep them from fighting it out. All we are doing is delaying the inevitible. Now, if the Republicans can delay it until after 2008, they may benefit but I doubt it. As for the economy, I agree. It is very good and has been for about 2 decades now. But the fact is that the good economy has largely benefitted the upper class. Most of the working people are worse off because they are losing pay and benefits- especially health benefits- while the rich and the CEOs pocket all the money.
Black voters also deeply admire the Clntons. In fact Bill Clinton is known as “America’s first black President” within the black community. I would not bet on that vote automatically going for Obama.

The Democratic base is less nuts than the Republican base which is why many Republicans run from their base! Some of their ideas:1. BAN all abortions2. Deport all Mexicans (that will get them lots of votes in the southwest)3. Privitaze or eliminate Social Security4. Put gays in prison for having gay sex. Put regular people in prison for having oral sex.5. Do away with the income tax and switch to a sales tax thus putting ALL the tax burden on the working people.6. Force the Christian religion on all people.Need I go on?
What was that Kev? Is this your formula?
Take the nuttiest things seen on the weirdest blogs or websites. Mix a few arguable facts with your own lies. Call it Republican base ideas.
What have you accomplished? Nothing. Except labeling yourself a scroll over.
Any bad news that happens now until election day, blame it on the majority Democrat Congress, who have lower approval ratings than President Bush.
Now that’s sad!
They campaigned on change! They said they will turn the World into a utopia and destroy Bush! How come they haven’t done that yet?
Remember! Everything bad in the county is now in the hands of Democrats and they should be blamed! Blamed for Hurrican Dean, Blamed for the bridge collapse in Minneapolis, blamed for the Huntington Mine collaspe, blame for the sub-prime lending crunch, blame for everything and anything that is negative! Every solider death in Iraq, blame it on the Democrat Congress. Blame! Blame! Blame!
Oh wait! I forgot the unspoken law! Democrats can’t be blamed for anything. Only Republicans! Oh Yeah!
Ok! Never mind! Blame Bush!
Joe Williams,
DING DING DING!
Where to begin? Have a busy morning ahead, but I have to say SOMETHING.
Democrats don’t have oversight of Federal mines: Mine Safety and Health Administration does, which is under the EXECUTIVE branch.
http://www.msha.gov/
Get over your victimology. When Democrats screw up, CF2K is happy to blame them, like the other week when they gave away the Fourth Amendment under pressure from the Bush Administration.
Otherwise, grow up, Joe Williams. A Republican President has royally screwed up every conceivable thing he could have screwed up. If it hooots you widdle feewings to have this pointed out, tough beans.
CF2K! Grow a brain you putz.
I’m mocking people like you! Can’t you see that? Are you actually so unintelligent, that you cannot understand my point?
Well anyways! I just made it!
*Sigh* You guys are so predictable and without humor! Just beta dogs with your tongue sticking out.
Now here comes your whole tribe to come back you up! *shakes head*
Sheepocrats I should call you guys. Get a life and try to grow a smile.
It’s laughable how Republicans try to pigeon hole blacks who are Democrats! They think we can’t think for ourselves, are beholden to the Democratic party for supporting civil rights and other actions favorable to the black population, think we hang with the Democrats because of alleged handouts to blacks! Let me say this. I am a Democrat, have been all of my life and with the state of the country today, probably will be for the rest of my life. I have a number of reasons for remaining a Democrat. The first and formost is this insane Iraq war! Over 3,500 American military have been killed for a war that the current president claims is in the best interest of our country. Four years ago we were to believe that we would go in to Iraq, kick ass and come away victorious. That was the nuttiest, most insane analogy ever suggested for an end to a military conflict the United States has seen! Second, was and still is the idea that lowering taxes, especially among the rich will produce jobs and insure a strong economy! Has any one seen evidence of that lately? No! The Republican controlled congress played fast and loose with our tax dollars — handing out pork barrel legislation by the ton! Items such as that bridge to nowhere in Alaska, 100-thousand dollar toilet seats, etc! Nice way of taking care of our money, Republicans. Oh, they will you tell that their party has morals. Yeah, like the pedophile congressman from Florida who preyed on congressional pages! And how about that Senator from Louisiana who blasted Bill Clinton for his dalliance with Monica Lewinsky, only to be found out about his sinfull ways with the D.C. madam! Everyone has his short-comings including me. But you certainly don’t hear of Democrats carping about someone’s sexual misconduct or mores! And lastly, Republicans talk a big line about being patriotic — ready to go into battle for OUR country. Funny, when it comes down to who is to do the fighting? Uh, uh! “I have to take care of my family!” Or as our illustrious vice president put it, “I had better things to do!” Now that’s being a real patriot! When a group of college kids were asked how many supported the war! A great majority, mostly white Republican males jumped up and they did! When they were asked if they would join the military if ask to do so to fight in Iraq they all sat down. Again, so much for patriotism. I served three years in the US Army. Two years in RVN! So when Republicans pop off that crap that blacks are hamstrung by the Democratic party I just hold my nose and walk away! I have NEVER applied for government assistance, I own my home, have sent two kids to college, they have NEVER been incarcerated and I have NEVER ran around on the lady of my life having been with her for 26 years! That’s a great more than what most Republicans claim!!!
Good points OMR. Blacks I know will vote for the candidate who best represents their views regardless of that candidate’s race. And, some are conservative and might even vote for a McCain.
People are diverse; no one ethnic group is homogeneous within itself.
Econ – valid points; however we just might find ourselves doing what we did in 1960 – electing a Senator. My advice to a Senator candidate for president would be to not make the mistake Kerry did – selecting ANOTHER Senator as running mate.
Richardson would be a tremendous asset for either Clinton or Obama.
“I own my home, have sent two kids to college, they have NEVER been incarcerated and I have NEVER ran around on the lady of my life having been with her for 26 years! That’s a great more than what most Republicans claim!!! ”
I worked my way through college, I spent 4 years active duty USN.I own my own home, have sent three kids to college, they have never been incarcarated and I have never ran around on the ladyu of my life having been with her for 33 years! That’s a great deal mor than what most Democrats claim.
The difference lj is that these republicans and their spokespersons preach family values at the rest of us all the while trying to hide their feet of clay. My most recent anniversary celebrated 36 years. And Rush?
I really don;t care about Rush. SO, Since Democrats don;t preach family values, but instead preach …..what? I should be for them?
Wow, you guys are unbelievable.
You took a thread which pit Clinton versus Obama on the black vote,
andtwisted it
into
a hate for Bush and those no-good republicans absurdity.
The WEBlog is known for having a liberal bias, but it has become a travesty not worthy of rational discussions. No one can stay on target in any single thread.
As way of confirmation, just read the below hate mail and name-calling which will follow this post:
The Mexican vote is now larger than the Black vote.
Since Clinton and Obama both support illegal immigration, not sure which one will have the edge there.
As for the black vote, Clinton and Obama both showed up to preach in the same church in Selma, Alabama. Not sure which one “won” the black vote.
(Hint: Hillary doesn’t blend in as well as Obama! Though some (LA Times) argue Obama needs to get some more sun!)

She sure tried to fit in Max. Did you hear her accent?
She actually tried to speak, is it southern?
That may indicate a mental problem perhaps voters should think about. Go Obama in BAMA!
What? You don’t think Hillary sounded genuine?
Say it isn’t so!
I don’t know, maybe that’s a combination Chicago, Little Rock, New York accent she has!
Let me make an early prediction.
Clinton will get elected with Obama at her right side. Together they will bring in the black vote.
Hillary will be remembered as one of the great presidents. She will serve two terms, and Obama will win the following election.
They will name schools after Clinton and Obama. Statues and fountains will be graced with their beauty.
But only Obama will be added to Mount Rushmore.
There isn’t room for both Clintons.
“The economy will be strong…”
Subprime housing market, anyone?
Posted by: Steven Davis | August 20, 2007 at 02:27 AMBack in March I posted following:
“The article about the mortgages that were given with large balloons, adjustable rates with high ceilings, interest only for first 2 years, etc… This was a huge market debacle. Consumers were encouraged to take out mortgages they really couldn’t afford. Many find now that they either owe the entire balance (balloon), they now have a payment that has increased over 70% (interest only) or they have an adjustable rate that when adjusted doubled their payment.
With bankruptcy no longer an option for many they are simply walking away from homes in which they have no equity and in fact owe up to 125% of the home value.
This is as dangerous to consumers as the payday loans but no one is hollering – yet. We will see a glut of homes on the market, home values will crater, stocks that were built on mortages sold will be dumped. If you own one of those now is the time to bail.

Earlier this month Chas tried to pull that old lib trick about poor unfortunates who couldn’t control the circumstances in their life.
“What it comes down to is that home owners facing foreclosure all have one thing in common, a common denominator if you will, and that is financial hardship.
Financial Hardship can be caused by death in the family, a recent divorce, job loss, medical emergencies, and what we’re going to be seeing a lot more of in the future – rising interest rates.”

Steven when I tried to talk about this lending market many months ago it was written off as conservative garble. As you can see now it was very telling and we are now seeing the results. The economy is still strong. The market is still strong. The lending market is going through a large adjustment and many mortgage brokers who used these tactics to finance homes are going out of business.
We have convinced an entire generation that they are owed something and thus you see the large number of defaults. We all have to earn what we get not have it given to us.
A life lesson. I wonder if anyone sold their stock in this institutions before the fall.
I agree with KSGRM. The borrower is responsible for himself/herself.
Not given much press is the fact that every one of these borrowers were provided with Truth in Lending statements, Mortgages, Notes, Arm Riders and numerous other government mandated forms – which disclose the terms of the loan.
The lesson of PT Barnum should be taught in public schools – a sucker is born every minute.
And the lesson should be that you never sign anything without fully understanding what you are signing.
The borrower is responsible for himself/herself.
Personal responsibility is not taught in public schools either anymore. The government will take care of you.
Well, the government mandated all these mortgage forms, and still the borrowers can’t read?
Reading too, used to be taught in public schools.
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, quasi-government agencies, own around 70% of all conventional mortgage loans in this country. (HUD-FHA/VA also has a good chunk of the market).
So the Government itself is in effect regulating itself! Check the bottom of your mortgage if you don’t beleive me. Chances are it says FHA, VA, FNMA, or FHLMC in the form number.
Government is taking care of us alright!
Likely this whole issue has been overblown by the press. In the big picture of the mortgage market, a small percentage of homeowners took out risky Arm, Negative Am, Balloon type mortgage loans.
Anyone with half a brain in the last 10 years, would have gotten a fixed rate mortgage when fixed rates were at historic lows in the 5% range.
The government played a big role in duping the stupid into this mess, and I’m guessing the Socialist Democrats will bail-out some of these idiots with free taxpayer dollars.
The poor homeowners will then be saved, but so will the rich investors. Anyone here own FNMA, GNMA bonds directly or thru a Real Estate fund in your 401k? (You be rich!)
The bottom line: The borrower is responsible for himself/herself.
And only in the United Socialist States of America, would people be bailed out by the Federal government for stupidly buying a house they cannot afford, and signing a mortgage with ridiculous terms.
Many people salivated at gettting that $500,000 hgome for only $300 per month. Their own greed snagged them. THey bear their own responsibility.
Next time, hire a real estate attorney. Make them explain to you what you ar signing. If you don;t get it , don’t sign it!! WHy is it thar to understand?
And I seriously doubt that this large number of defaulting is due to “a death in the family”.
People with bad credit ratings do not magically become fiscally prudent after signing another piece of paper.
Wealthy people buying second homes, vacation homes, and beach cottages also took a risk.
The Companies making these risky loans should fail, investors loose money, and the home owners get kicked out.
Everything will balance out without another government bail out.
And it’s NOT Bushy’s fault.
Hotdog I think you have got it!!
I just heard a Quicken Home Loan advertisement. They are now calling their loans fixed variable rate loans (???).
What they are is loans where for 2 years you have a low teaser rate and then your rate goes up for the remainder of the loan term.
How many refinancers will fall for this one?
Wow, the sock puppets are out again!
Well put that sock back on your foot and contribute something usefull farmie.
The Mexican vote? The only Mexicans who should be voting would be the legal ones and I would seriously doubt if the Mexicans that became American citizens the right way are too sympathetic to these illegals that seem to come and take over.
The Republicans seem to think they know about the black vote and that is funny. I don’t see too many black faces in Bush’s crowds.
And only in the United Socialist States of America, would people be bailed out by the Federal government for stupidly buying a house they cannot afford, and signing a mortgage with ridiculous terms.

And the same should be said for the lender. If the lender knowingly ropes people into signing these mortgages with ridiculous terms – then why should the taxpayers bail the lenders out?
Why just blame the people – blame the banks that are marketing these mortgages like they are candy!
Maid I would just say go back and look a little harder. You have missed a several faces.
Say Fred, I agree. And Hotdog1 said it right:
“The Companies making these risky loans should fail, investors loose money, and the home owners get kicked out.”
Investors were getting a better return on these “deals”. You know what happens to Risk when the Rate of return is higher!
Borrowers, should have read their terms and conditions.
Lenders just got greedy, now they should pay the price – closing their doors.

Yep. Sounds good to me. No government bailout
