GOP candidates take on Craig case

No hemming and hawing from GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney about the arrest and guilty plea of his now-former Idaho campaign chairman, Sen. Larry Craig: “Frankly, it’s disgusting,” Romney said on CNBC’s “Kudlow & Company” of the restroom incident that Craig insists was just a misunderstanding. “I think it reminds us of Mark Foley and Bill Clinton,” Romney added. He also said Craig had “disappointed the American people.”
Fellow candidate John McCain didn’t mince words either, telling Jay Leno: “It’s disgraceful.”
Mike Huckabee drew attention with this reaction on CBN News: “Frankly, Americans will forgive us for being sinners. They won’t forgive us for being hypocrites.”

    Isn’t this amazing?

I thought from all the left wing posts about Craig that all Republicans are closet homosexual, gay bashing, perverted hypocrites…

    So much for that.

Interesting, “Nathan,” how you Republic Party double-standard bearers miss the point.

Mitt & McCain & Huckabee (or you, for that matter) never said word one about Sen. David Vitter’s kinky sex trade in this summer’s Washington Madam scandal.

It’s obvious your party doesn’t take a “wide stance” against heterosexual criminals and care only when your closeted bretheren step over the line (or, in this case, under the toilet stall).

Looks like it’ll be another beautiful August day.

I wonder what new republican scandal will come to light?

With today’s republicans, if it’s not one damn thing, it’s another.

Not all of them. Just most of them. The others just have not been caught yet.

Somehow, Romney’s comments seem less than genuine. He tends to throw out statements about “the American people this” or “the American people that.” The Republican candidate must be psychic. Now he tells us, the American people, that we’re disappointed. Really? I have to be honest. I have watched this Craig thing play out over the last couple of days and disappointment is not a word that I would have chosen. Perhaps I’m not one of the American people Mitt was talking about. Apparently, Mitt meant some of the other American people. Then he throws out another comment that Craig’s dilemma reminds us of prior scandals. Oh, possibly. Again, though, if I’m being honest, when I heard about the Craig scandal, I didn’t exactly leap up out of my chair and start telling people, “Hey! This reminds me of Clinton! This reminds me of Foley! That Craig guy sure disappointed me!” Try again, Mitt. And no, you didn’t disappoint me, though I can’t really speak for the rest of the American people.

One of my new favorite comments was made by Right Angle yesterday.

“Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, Could switch parties and raise the moral standard of both the Republicans and the Democrats”

I would like to remind everyone that there is a “Bathroom Etiquette” guide on You Tube. All males should watch it and adhere to the suggestions. (yes, it’s humor folks – so lighten up.)

You notice how many of the so called left wing democrat liberalisms don’t even care that much about this moron. If he was a Democrat we’d never hear the end of it from Kansas, and the rest of the republican right dumping shit on us. Kind of shows the civility the moderate dems have and the angry rhetoric and personal attacks the right shows time and time again.

The only thing we’re give the Right flak about is the blatant hypocrisy they show in situations like these. Basically evidence that the Republicans don’t care on the issue, they just take the side against gay marriage to earn votes from the red states.

  16. Posted August 30, 2007 at 10:23 am | Permalink

It’s nice isn’t it. After so many Republicans were caught taking bribes, sleeping with female prostitutes, and fixing elections the one thing that gets them riled up is someone trying to have gay sex in a public restroom.

Democracy is not about earning vogtes from the red states. Democracy should be a government of the people and by the people. That is democracy.

The word you are looking for rfl is politics. Republicans know how to use scare tactics, get the Christian Right riled up about their perceived persecution.

From what I heard in Mitt Romney’s comments was never a scent of reprimand of Larry Craig = only that what he did in the men’s room was disgusting. What about Larry Craig himself?

And the bit about comparing Mark Foley and Bill Clinton with Larry Craig was way off the mark. First of all, Bill Clinton was with a consenting adult female. Mark Foley was perusing the Internet looking for young male interns. Now what is the same scenario in those two cases?

No, the Republicans don’t care about liars, thieves, adulterers and not even perverts (as evidenced that many Republican leaders knew of Mark Foley’s penchant before it became public). The only thing that Republicans don’t like is that one of their own got caught and can’t wiggle his out of this time.

But if the Republicans really took issue with all the sex scandals in their tribe, they would have no one left to tout as their family values guy.

I just heard the tape interview with the Police Detective and Senator Craig.

It sounds to me as the Police Detective had a very weak case and could have been easily defeated in the court.

Craig was in the left stall and the Detective was in the right stall.

The Police Detective said Craig reached over with his left hand (mind you while sitting on the stool) and reached with palms up at the bottom portion of the wall dividing the two stalls.

I guess the elderly Senator Craig is more agile than we thought.

The Police Detective said he knew it was it left hand because of the wedding band.

Craig stated that he reached down to get some paper on the floor with his right hand and picked it up.

There was also an issue about feet touching.

My question is why would the Police Detective’s feet be that spread apart in his own stall to initiate the contact?

Even an average attorney could have gotten that thrown out of court because of reasonable doubt.

It appears the Senator was caught in a case of entrapment of a very poorly executed sting.

There were no videos, no witnesses nor any sound recordings during the time of the incident.

I think it should be left to the people of Idaho to decide if the Senator should remain in office.

I do too.If he feels that he wants to continue being their representative, he should certainly run again. If the voters can overlook this and think he is doing a good job representing their interests they should re-elect him.

Don’t you just love it when Republicans still defend their own when they get caught because of ‘weak evidence’?

If it was so weak, then why did Larry Craig plead guilty?

And somehow Republicans can’t cross over their left hand to the right side? If Craig is that fragile to not be able to do this maneuver, then may be he is too old to be the Senator?

And I wonder how much pension will this guy get if he resigns in disgrace? Probably more than the average American will ever make in their lifetime.

I like how Republicans trust the legal system except when it doesn’t go their way. Then it’s all second guessing and analysis.

How’s this for a question. If the Senator said he had a wide stance, how is that possible with his pants around his ankles? Does he remove his pants completely to poo? Perhaps a rabid conservative will do some reconstruction of the crime scene to prove his innocence, thus saving the party of moral values.

Because that’s what it’s all about, protecting the party.

“First of all, Bill Clinton was with a consenting adult female.”

You know, I bought this argument until I saw Barbara Walter’s interview of Monica Lewinski. Monica is proof that adolescence extends to age 25 in this cohort. She was extremely immature and if that wasn’t evident to Clinton, it should have been. I lost a lot of respect for Clinton when I saw that interview. It has always amazes me when I hear maidmarion’s argument from women who consider themselves to be feminists.

Having said that, Republicans defending what Craig did, claiming it was a weak case, etc. are just disgracing themselves. As if that didn’t do enough of that already.

Steven Davis I can’t believe that we agree on two points in the same thread. Craig might as well hang it up. His goose is cooked as far as I am concerned. If by chance he was set up then he should resign because of extreme stupidity in pleading guilty to anything.

As for Monica Lewinsky she was a very immature person who fell under the spell of a much more forceful person. This very charasmatic person was in a position of power over her. This is exactly why sexual harrassment is defined in so many ways.

When the feminist came with evidence that this same thing had happened to her before – this was to slam an already damaged person.

Oh please…she made it her goal to seduce him before he even knew who she was. Of course he was so stupid to think that he could have “sex” with a 19 yr old and she wouldn’t go public with it…but people like him think they’re impermiable to consequences..so there you have a good mix for a juicy scandal. He was stupid for thinking with the little head..but isn’t that what most men do? Neither one of them were victims. Just two really selfish people who decided to hook up.

Did I say I thought Monica was smart? No, what I said, if you would take the time to comprehend the written word was a consenting adult female. Nothing about maturity or immaturity.

And I am not a feminist – why do you assume that Steven Davis? Am I to assume you are an uptight tightie-whitie?

It would be interesting to study the methods Republicans use to expel waste from their bodies. You know they don’t do things like normal people do. And most of what they expel floats as opposed to sinking which is why the bathrooms at a GOP gathering stink so damn bad! Also I have noticed that they never use the men’s urinals to piss. They always go into the #2 stall and close the door to piss. I don’t know if they are just emabarassed because of size or if they think it is “dirty” to pee with other people around.

When I was around 32 I hooked up with a big breasted woman of 22 years old. We both worked at Cessna Fluid Power in Hutchinson. She flirted with me and I with her, and before long we were in the sack! Four years later I saw her and said to myself,”How did I do that woman?” Course, She probably said the same thing about me. The point is the sex act is for the time present. You don’t think of the consequences that may occur afterwards. Some get caught like Clinton, Vitter, Foley and Craig. And many don’t — like me! Human frailty can damage a person’s life in more ways than one! I shutter at the thought that what I did in the past can be brought forth if and when I ran for a public office. Maybe, just maybe the Republican party and others may become more compassionate and forgiving in the future. However, with the calls for Craig’s resignation by fellow Republicans that’s highly unlikely!!!
