Craig may resign soon

Embattled Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, is expected to resign soon, according to reports today, but it’s unlikely to be a pickup seat for Democrats anytime soon, note political observers. Idaho is a solid red state, and President Bush won handily in 2004 with 69 percent of the vote. Both senators and both representatives are Republican, as is the governor, who would certainly appoint a Republican to replace Craig.
It’s nationally where Craig hurts the GOP, with yet another over-the-top scandal. That’s why party leaders are eager for him to step down.

We need a through housecleaning of our government. I’m sorry that the Jews have made such a mockery of a Jewish Homeland that Israel must be disbanded, as just another failed experiment.

From a “steely eyed missile man” perspective, it makes sense for Craig to resign now, allowing an appointment of another Republican to replace him in time for the natural incumbent advantage to develop for the 2008 election; it allows the GOP to retain its blocking minority in the Senate, and very likely the Idaho seat in 2008; and, puts a lid on the deal, effectively killing any potential further negative publicity for the GOP.

It is my understanding from reading/listening to various sources that Sen. Craig is a very stubborn person, and he may well resist this “to the bitter end”.

VT I am in favor of Craig resigning but am also very upset that this has stayed front and center for so long. Where was the media when Barney Frank’s friend was running a brothel out of he basement? Where were they when Sandy Berger was stealing documents from the National Archives and burning them? Where were they when cold cash Jefferson has the National Guards take him to his flooded home to retrieve his cold cash? Where are they now when Hillary is embrolled in a contributions scandal reminiscent of Bills campaign?

We see wall to wall coverage of Craig and nothing of the demo scandals. Maybe a mention beneath the fold on the business section but no headlines on the front page.

“Watching network morning show anchors interview the Democratic presidential candidates often makes you wonder if you’ve seen tougher interviews on overnight acne-care infomercials. Their questions are often so simple and promotional that you wish they’d just go ahead and wear their “Hillary!” or “Obama ‘08″ buttons on the set.”http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=22147

Pat Bozel has it right here. Until the major media outlets start reporting all the news, actually asking the hard questions of all candidates the American public at large will go blindly along with whatever they choose to divulge as ‘facts worth knowing’.

Sure Craig, go fishing in Idaho. That’s what you were doing in the public toilet, right? Fishing.

“Where was the media when Barney Frank’s friend was running a brothel out of he basement?”

This wasn’t of any interest because it was Barney Franks friend and not Barney who was running the “brothel”. Barney wasn’t convicted of anything.

“Where were they when Sandy Berger was stealing documents from the National Archives and burning them?”

Where were you, ksgrm? This story was all over the media when it happened. And for the record, Sandy Berger didn’t BURN any documents. He stuffed them in his pants.

“Where were they when cold cash Jefferson has the National Guards take him to his flooded home to retrieve his cold cash?”

Again, this was in the national news and is still under investigation. It may not go anywhere due to the FBIs heavy handed actions raiding Jefferson’s office. More over-reaching by this republican administration.

What foreign country were you in when this was in the news?

“Where are they now when Hillary is embrolled in a contributions scandal reminiscent of Bills campaign?”

Hillary is hardly “embroiled” in anything. Did Hillary know that some 3rd level contributor had a problem with the law in California? Political campaigns would have very little money left if they did background checks on every contributor. This contributor has been living in the open for 15-16 years. The California cops must not have wanted him very bad.

The American people can forgive a little scandal now and then. What they don’t forgive is hypocrisy. Doing something wrong is one thing. Standing up and preaching against something, professing to be the party of “Family Values”, and then getting caught doing something like Craig did just stinks to the average Joe.

    It’s not the screw-up, it’s the hypocrisy.

Craig’s been in Congress 27 years anyway. In 2000, it was time for him to go.

    Need TERM LIMITS:

    4 House Terms = 8 years2 Senate Terms = 12 years

20 years is enough to get a job done in Congress.

And if you can’t get it done in 20 years, it’s time to get out and let someone else try.

But David Vitter gets all sorts of GOP support. Is it because Vitter’s sexual offenses simply envolve by-the-hour girls instead of next-toilet-stall boys?

    Nope.

It’s because Louisiana has a Democratic governor and Idaho has a Republic Party governor and they would appoint someone to replace their duely elected Senator.

XXX you glossed over the meat of my post. These demo items do hit the news, once, toned down, and quickly forgotten. This idiot was trolling for sex in a public bathroom and we haven’t seen else for days. Trolling for sex = stealing and destroying secure national archive document?? Which is the most serious? Well you figure that out.

I’d agree Vaughn except for the huge advantage of MONEY that incumbents somehow are always able to acquire. Makes it difficult to get any new blood into office. And corruption furthers the cause of more corruption.

Why do we have so many millionaires in Congress? You have to be one to pay for the ads to get elected OR you have to be a political cronie to get your Party’s $$$. And the cronies are just party puppets. (Dems & Repubs)

Forcing them out of Congress after 20 years doesn’t seem like such a bad thing. We do the same to Presidents after 8 years.

I see this as a big reason why there is no 3rd Party that’s been able to challenge the existing 2.

    Independently yours,

    Max

Max, I think there are many reasons things revolve around the 2 party system. Yes, the advantage of the incumbency is huge, so there’s not going to be any great push to see anything change by the GOP and the Democrats. The amendment that limits the President to two terms was relatively late in our history, and a definite reaction to the FDR four terms. I have always wondered if FDR hadn’t been in such ill health his last term whether there would have been as much interest in limiting the terms of the President to two.

“You just glossed over the Pat Rozel report that very clearly showed the media bias.”

    ksgrm, PUL-EEZE!

A website that has a header that says “Leading the Conservative Movement since 1944″ isn’t a place to draw any conclusions about bias.

Bias depends on which side you’re on. You think the media is biased to the left. I think the media gave Bush a free pass for about 5 years.

I don’t argue that the media is biased, it just depends on where you go for news. Do you think that Fox News isn’t biased? How about talk radio? or Clear Channel?

xxx, IIRC, Mr. Berger was accused of destroying copies of security documents. It is my recollection the original documents continue to reside, safe and sound, in the National Archives.

Yes, removing the copies was in violation of the applicable statutes, and he pleaded guilty to, and received some punishment for, his actions in so doing.

Yes, there is bias in the media. Which way it goes is in the eye of the beholder, as you stated.

I dunno Vaughn, you can read the report in its entirety at the URL below. There are a couple of paragraphs I clipped out of the PDF to post here.

“From the Staff Report U.S. House of Representatives 110th Congress Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Tom Davis, Ranking Member, January 9, 2007″

    http://republicans.oversight.house.gov/Media/PDFs/BergerReport010907.pdf

“The full extent of Berger’s document removal, however, is not known, and never can be known. The Justice Department cannot be sure that Berger did not remove original documents for which there were no copies or inventory. On three of Berger’s four visits to the Archives, he had access to such documents.

There is no basis for concluding Berger did not remove original documents responsive to 9/11 Commission requests during the May 30, 2002 and July 18, 2003 visits to the National Archives.”

    http://republicans.oversight.house.gov/news/PRArticle.aspx?NewsID=4

In my opinion, Berger should have been prosecuted more harshly and the case left open until all questions were resolved.

If I had done such a thing, I would be serving a minimum twenty year sentence in a Fed Penitentiary.
