“I’m a big fan of Al’s,” Vice President Dick Cheney said about Attorney General Alberto Gonzeles in the radio interview this week. “. . . I think Al has done a good job under difficult circumstances. The debate between he and the Senate is something they’re going to have to resolve. But I think he has testified truthfully.” Cheney also said that Gonzales could still be effective as attorney general, even though many lawmakers from both parties believe he has lost credibility, the Washington Post reported. “I think the key is whether or not he has the confidence of the president, and he clearly does,” Cheney said.

It turns out that Gonzales was talking about very specific issues that were different from topics that the Senators accused him lying about.
Once again, the troglodytes in Congress have made chimps of themselves.
That depends on what the definition of IS is… LOL
That’s the claim.
There’s more room for truth because it apparently was about a “different” secret, unnannouced DATAMING program.
But the problem is that Gonzales parses the truth and obfuscates as a matter of course, regardless of the nature of the information, and his sycophantic behavior will lose credibilty for programs the President wants to push: No one will believe Al’s legal advice because he is a shill for the WH rather than a legitimate perspective that can be trusted.
ALSO, the politicization of the JD sends a chilling effect through the US attorney ranks. The best federal prosecutors and judges will be more inclined to stay away if they think that they will be forced to try or not try cases because of undue political pressure.
The reason this investigation has gone on so long is that the committee STILL cannot get anyone to tell them who made up the list of US Attorneys to be fired, and the White House will not cooperate. When Feinstein asked clueless Al how many attorneys had been fired in total, he DIDN’T KNOW! Somebody fired them! Shouldn’t Al be expected to know the status of his 93 US attorneys? Shouldn;t he be expected to prepare for testimony? Shouldn’t he be expected to know basic information after all of the times he has been before the Senate?
Suffice it to say that among others, conservative lawyer Bruce Fein (served in Reagan’s cabinet), is among thoswe who believe Gonzales has made a travesty of the JD.
Find more about Fein and others in this 4-part report on AG, his past and present:http://blog.washingtonpost.com/benchconference/2007/03/alberto_gonzales_a_willing_acc.html
Philip, the Eagle should run that Post story if they can!
He has proven he cannot be trusted and is in fact a criminal himself. He can keep the seat warm as long as he wants but as far as getting anything done, it won’t happen. In fact he might piss the Congress off to the point they cut his budget but that would hurt the work of those under him who, for the most part, do a decent job.
“It turns out that Gonzales was talking about very specific issues that were different from topics that the Senators accused him lying about.”
It turns out that he was lying through his teeth.
No Snuffy, if you were to read the article you would find out that the name of the program was not even created/named until 2006.
How can someone lie about not recognizing a name of a program that didn’t really have a name until years after the incident.
With the past history of the administrations lackies, AG AG will not resign or be fired. GW will keep this liar in his job until Congress starts to move the impeachment process forward. How can the “top cop” of the United States be looked at as not credible? How is this acceptable to the American people? This is the one position in the administration that cannot have the slightest credibility issue. But we have all seen how important being credible means to this WH. 70+ “I don’t recall” answers followed up by conflicting testimony in later testimony is unbelieveable from this man.
Sounds like Bush is set up for another “You’re doing a heck of a job Brownie”
KansasYour idiotic reich wing argument does not cut mustard. I heard this play on words distraction tactic yesterday. I never have seen a group of people try to muddy the water more in my life. Whether the program was named or not does not change the fact that the AG lied about his involvement. Let’s not be stupid and ignore the facts of the testimony of other credible witnesses that contradict the AG. These witnesses have nothing to lose and have no reason to lie unlike AG AG. Give me a break with your muddy explanation of why the AG continues to lie to Congress.
He should be impeached and criminal charges should be brought for perjury!
“…those under him who, for the most part, do a decent job.:
Many of the most competent have left the DOJ.
Interesting the White House needed to send a letter to explain the “discrepancies.” AG AG went to law school but can’t write his own letter?
He is an incompetent shill for a less competent administration.
Well, Gonzo is going to be ok. If the ‘Big Guy” is behind him that’s all that matters. No fear of conviction if you are a Cheney guy.
Cheney is a big fan of Al; Al-Quida.
Well of course Dick is a fan of Al: Al is much better at lying with a straight face, as Cheney’s interview with Larry King demonstrated.
It turns out that Gonzales was talking about very specific issues that were different from topics that the Senators accused him lying about.
Once again, the troglodytes in Congress have made chimps of themselves.

and once again Kansas has drunk too much of that Rush Koolaid. When will you and people of your ilk learn to think for themselves?
Who cares what Dick Cheney thinks of anybody? Consider the source when you hear Dick Cheney’s name.
The Bush Administration is in their last years of power and are going to do anything and everything they can to cause as many problems as they can for the next president - which in all likelihood will be a Democrat.
