But can she find South Africa on a map?

When asked at a beauty pageant why one-fifth of Americans couldn’t locate the United States on a map, Miss Teen South Carolina, Lauren Caitlin Upton, delivered a rambling response that seemed to be evidence of the problem, speculating that many “U.S. Americans” lack maps and then for some reason mentioning South Africa and Iraq.
A YouTube video has turned the 18-year-old into a figure of fun. But Upton got a second crack at the question Tuesday:
“Well, personally, my friends and I, we know exactly where the United States is on our map. I don’t know anyone else who doesn’t. And if the statistics are correct, I believe there should be more emphasis on geography.”
That’s close enough for beauty pageant work. Go to the head of the class.

Lay off this poor girl already. Making fun of a teenager because she choked is just flipping wrong.

“Making fun of a teenager because she choked is just flipping wrong.”

You are correct. With some practice, she won’t choke.

My thought is that she should just begin her Freshman year at Appalachian State and all this, too, will pass…

Another product of our public school cirriculum. We should be so proud. To bad they didn’t ask her a question on evolution she probably could have aced that one – and she has a 3.5GPA.

Yeah, we’re making fun of the Republican voting base. How many times have we heard Republicans rail against those liberal intellectual elites? You know, the ones who own maps?

Much Ado about nothing, I don’t think I saw this much discussion when during the debate with Gore, Bush said SS was a state program! And, this from a president that wants to overhaul our SS.

At first I had a good laugh. What she said was kind of buffoonish. But then I thought of the times I looked stupid at that age and I began to feel for this young lady! After all, this was the first time she had gotten before a large crowd and it was obvious she was scared! As for some of the statements made on this board, including one from ksgrm I’d like for you to take a script and read it cold into a mike without making a mistake! It’s easy to play backseat driver! Oh, and the little dig you took at public schools? Well, My kids are a product of Wichita public schools. One holds a masters in education and one is finishing up his education in economics at KU! Both were honor roll students from 3rd grade through high school, the one with the masters on the honor roll four of five years a KU! Miss South Carolina may not be well versed in speaking or thinking off the top but it’s a good bet she’ll beat anything most of us have done in our lifetimes!!!!

Reminds me of one pageant finalist a few years back who said she wanted to end poverty; that poverty was about not having money, so she’d put more ATM’s in poor neighborhoods so poor people could get more money!

Ya know, I guess the winners of these pageants are not determined by the highest SAT score or essay writing.

brian, I think you’re right. BTW, these types of events are often styled as “scholarship contests”. Clearly not a merit based competition, well, at least not academic merit at least…

Beauty pageant contestants are usually coached in all areas of the competition. Surely someone from SC realized this girl was lacking in public speaking skills before her appearance?

For that matter, as demonstrated by some of the postings in this blog – if the girl looks pretty then the average male does not care about her brain. Perhaps this is why our young women are not too smart but sure know how to shake that thing.

I agree with you wholeheartedly OMR. I think it’s in extremely poor taste for so many supposed ADULTS to be laughing and pointing at this girl’s blunder. Get off her back already.

The thing is, contestants are given a pool of possible questions beforehand, and they usually memorize answers to everything. This girl probably had something all put together for all the questions and then she got all the answers mixed up…uh Iraq…poverty….education…

At least that’s what they did back when I did paegants in my young(er) years. Don’t hold it fine. I can even find Guam on a map.

It was a stupid question, but I’d like for someone to spring it on the presidential candidates.

I’ll bet none of them could answer it better.

What Miss Teenaged South Carolina should have done was express admiration for the 80% of of people who *can* find the US on a map! Considering the 30% or so of Americans who still support George WMD Bush, I’m beginning to be surprised that two-thirds of them could even find a map.

Slightly more than a quarter of Americans think Shrub is doing a good job as President of the United States. About one-out-of-four Americans think Larry Craig isn’t gay. Only twenty-five Americans out of a hundred think the Republic Party agenda is in America’s best interests.

Three out of four Americans are convinced the Republic Party is taking this nation in the wrong direction, both domestically and in foreign affairs.

Their only redemption is a couple percent of them might be able to find the USA on a map.
