Yes Republican…..going all the way back to the Carter Administration, we’ve never had a good handle on Middle East policy. Repub or Demo…no one has done a good job, except for the fact that we’ve kept the oil flowing, which is a plus. But as for trying to establish responsible and stable governments that see the advantages of representative government and respect for the rule of law, its been a wash.

And enough of the hysterics about what happens when we leave Iraq. There’s enough weapons in the country for every man woman and child. The Iraqis are secularists, not jihadists. They tolerate Al-Quaeda now because they’re killing Americans, but when we’re gone, they’ll turn on them. So let them all take up arms and settle it themselves. As for Iran becoming the dominant power in the region, where have you been, the US and EU have been cowering before the Persians for a decade or more, all on account of their oil. Actually, it would be a good thing if Iran became involved in Iraq, the Iraqi Shiites are not anxious to be stooges for Iran. They’ll use the Iranians much as they have used the US to suppress the Sunnis, but they’ll eventually go their own way. There is no love lost between Arabs and Persians.

2. We knew we won in WW2 when the Germans, Italians and Japanese government surrendered. What government is going to surrender in Iraq?
