Tiahrt favored letting raise take effect

Cost-of-living raises in the U.S. House of Representatives are automatic, meaning the only way to stop them is with special effort. That latest effort quietly failed last week on a procedural vote, 244-181, meaning lawmakers should get their 2.5 percent, $4,400 raise next year, bringing their wages to nearly $170,000 annually. In the Kansas delegation, Republican Todd Tiahrt of Goddard was in the majority favoring letting the raise take effect; Republican Jerry Moran of Hays and Democrats Dennis Moore of Lenexa and Nancy Boyda of Topeka were among the losing votes to block the raise.

Tiahrt, always supports a raise, as long as it’s not for someone making minimum wage!

No wonder these high dollar white collar workers think a 2.5 percent raises is good enough for all the pee-ons.At $170,000 yearly salaries that 2.5 percent is a pretty good chunk of money every year on top of all the little incentives they get.BTW, how is it that these so call representatives are representing their districts by going against what their district say?

I agree with Phantom. But in all honesty, since we did get the minimum wage increase, they should get their raise too.

What has to happen though, is they need to stop awarding pensions to those members of congress convicted of crimes. Saw that on CNN last night.

And none of them are going to vote against their buddies.

Congressional pay and the minimum wage should both be indexed to inflation. It’s fair and removes them as political topics.

Why don’t you print something about how much Tiller’s making off of illegal late term abortions in this neo-Nazi rag?

    Ben,

Holman’s posting is completely neutral. And Tiahrt is fair game: if you hadn’t noticed, he’s the US Representative for the Congressional district served by the Eagle.

And about Tiller: You know for a fact that the Eagle has posted many, many blog entries about Tiller, Kline, and the abortion debate in general. Don’t pretend otherwise.

How does it make any difference how much they make? We get what we pay for from all of them. You want better respresentation then it will cost big bucks to draw those capable of doing the job properly away from industry. Make it worth while to those who are able to do the job by paying them more.

I have asked for, and not received a reply from Mr. Tihart regarding the vote in Congress for Social Security benefits. Unless he can reply to his constituents in a timely manner, he should not receive a raise. In fact, he should not be be re-elected! I am still hoping for a reply. My question to Mr Tihart was: Could you provide a list of the Congressmen who voted for social security for the illegal aliens.

  12. Posted July 5, 2007 at 1:20 pm | Permalink

    Yvonne,

Here’s a link I use to figure out who voted on what and how they stand on the issues.

    Click on the linkhttp://www.ontheissues.org/House.htm#KS

    Choose Tiarht or whomever.

Then choose Social Security for his stance on SS.* Voted YES on raising 401(k) limits & making pension plans more portable. (May 2001)* Voted YES on reducing tax payments on Social Security benefits. (Jul 2000)* Voted NO on strengthening the Social Security Lockbox. (May 1999)* Rated 0% by the ARA, indicating an anti-senior voting record. (Dec 2003)* Reduce taxes on Social Security earnings. (Sep 1994)

Otherwise you can go to The Library of Congress database called “Thomas.”

Then you can searchSOCIAL SECURITY BENEFICIARY TAX REDUCTION ACT AND THE SENIOR CITIZENS’ TAX ELIMINATION ACT

or just Social Security as the search parameters.

This is exactly the opposite of what should happen. Politics should not be a career choice, that is why we have many of the problems we have now. Being an elected representative should be a civic duty, an honor, but not a career.

Congressmen should get paid the median household income in the precinct they represent. They should get raises only when minimum wage increases, and by the same amount, and they should have a 3 term limit.

Those things will put some positive changes in place to move our government in the right direction.

The only way I would ever vote for Tiahrt is if the Congressional pay is changed per my suggestion above to the median household income in his district. Then I would vote for him so he could feel what it is like to be a Kansan.

The Eagle has become a mouthpiece for the democrats. For them the democrats can do no wrong. I am sure there are many dems in congress with many negative stories about them but only the republican ones will be published in the news.

  19. Posted July 5, 2007 at 9:13 pm | Permalink

If we give the Reps a raise then we’ll have to cut off some dead weight because Republicans constantly claim that increases in wages lead to higher unemployment. Tiahrt and Moran have missed the most votes of the Kansas Reps (goodness, the two Republicans miss the most? Shocker!). So let’s cut off some dead weight; Tiahrt’s term limits have expired anyway.

A long while back I had a conservative tell me he wanted to put in a bullet in my head. There’s a difference between libs and cons, the conservatives actually go out an shoot people. If someone actually thinks WSClark is going to arrest Tiahrt, try him on corruption charges and execute him then that person has a weak grasp on reality.

    Doug,

Of course I don’t actually think that.

But WS Clark went off the deep end when I made a similar statement about making the anit-gun liberals wet their pants when I carry concealed.

WS Clark is still talking about how I was trying to intimidate him.

To this day he still makes a big deal out of that statement and thought I was threatening his life.

He even refuses to go to an event I am at because of it.

So, you are right, WS Clark does ahve a weak grasp on reality.

Sorry, little boy, but you don’t scare me and never will.

And my comment about shooting was obviously in jest.

Even a moron like you could figure that out.

“He even refuses to go to an event I am at because of it.”

No Nathan, I prefer to spend my time with friends, not jerks like you. You disgust me beyond comprehension – therefore, I choose not to be in your presence.

Do you want to know what a real man is, Nathan?

A real man does the dishes, sweeps the floors, cooks the dinner and cleans the toilet.

    (I do that every day.)

A real man hugs his children, no matter how big they are and tells them that he loves them.

    (I do that every day.)

A real man plays the fool for his kids (and grandkids) to make them laugh and so that they can appreciate selflessness.

    (I do that every day.)

A real man knows that everyone is equal and teaches his kids and grandkids that every day.

    (I do that every day.)

A real man teaches his children that life is short and to enjoy everyday.

    (I do that every day.)

A real man stands up for his children and himself in every circumstance. Family always comes first to a real man.

    (I do that every day.)

A real man doesn’t need a weapon or false bravado to show his family that he is there for them.

    (I do that every day.)

And a real man doesn’t hide behind a two pound chunk of metal for his family to know that he will be there to protect them.

    (I do that every day.)

A real man does hide behind a two-thousand year old book to justify his actions or hatred. A real man knows that God created all of us equal.

    (I do that every day.)

A real man doesn’t have to play at being a real man. He is one.

And he appreciates every man, woman and child on the face of the Earth.

    (I do that every day.)

A real man doesn’t need to fake it.

Wanna know how to get your Congressperson’s attention and return to a Government for the people? Declare the Constitutional amendment that allows Congress to vote for their own pay raise, Unconstitutional! Take the money back from the current pay raise and several future pay raises and replace the funds in the Social Security System that Congress spent! Shut down the current special health care and retirement programs that only Congressperson can qualify for and require them to participate in the same health care and retirement programs that all other Americans particpate in! Maybe when we citizens can get politicians back on a level playing field with the rest of us they will see the light!
