DETROIT — Julian Bond wants people to understand that when the NAACP symbolically buries the N-word on Monday, the effort will be led by the younger members of the venerable civil rights organization.

“Seven young people are on our board of directors, and they are spearheading this initiative,” said Bond, the group’s chairman. “This is the continuation of a long fight against the denigration of African Americans in popular culture. If it’s someone black or someone white, it’s equally wrong.”http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/07/06/AR2007070601898.html?hpid=sec-nations

Yeah, I’ll believe this when I see it (or don’t hear it). If they truly do away with the N-word, there’ll be a lot of quiet young black males since the N-word is every other word in their vocabulary.

    More congratulations Hank!!!!!

Very good points; my worst dog bite was from a cocker spaniel. Turned out he had been abused and the poor woman who had him was trying to rehabilitate and resocialize him. Upon learning that me reaction was ‘no harm no foul’ since all I needed was a band-aid.

I’d like to do something very unpleasant to some dog owners sometimes.

This was so nice, I had to post it twice–

    http://www.globalpolicy.org/security/oil/irqindx.htm

Iraq has the world’s second largest proven oil reserves. According to oil industry experts, new exploration will probably raise Iraq’s reserves to 200+ billion barrels of high-grade crude, extraordinarily cheap to produce. The four giant firms located in the US and the UK have been keen to get back into Iraq, from which they were excluded with the nationalization of 1972. During the final years of the Saddam era, they envied companies from France, Russia, China, and elsewhere, who had obtained major contracts. But UN sanctions (kept in place by the US and the UK) kept those contracts inoperable. Since the invasion and occupation of Iraq in 2003, everything has changed. In the new setting, with Washington running the show, “friendly” companies expect to gain most of the lucrative oil deals that will be worth hundreds of billions of dollars in profits in the coming decades. The new Iraqi constitution of 2005, greatly influenced by US advisors, contains language that guarantees a major role for foreign companies. Negotiators hope soon to complete deals on Production Sharing Agreements that will give the companies control over dozens of fields, including the fabled super-giant Majnoon. However, despite pressure from the US government and foreign oil companies, the current Iraqi government has not passed a national oil law. While regional governments angle for influence over the foreign oil contracts, most Iraqis favor continued control by a national company and the powerful oil workers union opposes de-nationalization. Iraq’s political future is very much in flux, but oil remains the central feature of the political landscape.

    *****

There you have it, all laid out, plain as day.

Western powers never liked getting muscled out by “nationalization” in 1972. And more recently, the U.S. and U.K.’s hard line in leading the sanctions meant that other countries were getting rewarded with contracts by Saddam.

    Ergo, Saddam had to go.

And while they were at it, the Neo-Cons decided to set up a Ayn Rand paradise of free enterprise and no taxation.

    Yeah. How’s that going?

First it was the MSM banging away on the word “terrorism” and now that that word has become meaningless, they’ve switched to “links to al-Qaida.”

al-Qaida is a battle-cry for Arabs who are fighting off the US financing of their slaughter at the behest of the Zionists of Israel and the Neocon traitors of the US.

Not a single day goes by which the Jews don’t murder Palestinians and the Jews are the reason we are in Iraq. Their newspapers are demanding that we invade Iran, who is only trying to position itself to defend against the hordes of invading Neocons/Zionists which are threatening to use Atomic weapons.

If our US Media would broadcast the actual situation in the Middle East, Americans could get a better grip on the reality there { and stop with the made-up “links” crap }.

Excellent letter, Hank. I think more emphasis needs to be put on the owner, not the breed. Dogs will only do what, in the case of a “pack leader” owner, what the owner allows. In an environment where the dog is the pack leader, which is most often the case, the dog is going to do what it is bred to do.

The Australian prime minister was caught in an act of honesty. He said that the Aussies can’t leave Iraq because they want the Iraqi oil. It must be great to be a soldier to know that you are getting shot at and seeing your friends die so Exxon can make billions more dollars. Fills you up with that sense of patriotism every time you gas up your Hummer knowing that some kid died so a CEO can make $400 million a year.

Good comments today guys, but do you mind if I interject the results of a new poll published Friday by Newsweek magazine?

US voters are ready to elect a black or woman as president: poll

Published: Friday July 6, 2007 AFP

Large majorities of US voters say they are ready to vote for an African-American or a woman for president, according to a poll published Friday by Newsweek magazine.

About 92 percent of respondents were willing to vote for a black presidential candidate, while 86 percent said they would cast a ballot for a woman, said the poll on Newsweek’s website.

However, smaller majorities of voters believed the country was ready to accept a black or woman president.

When asked if the United States was ready for a black president, 59 percent said yes, while 58 percent said the country was ready for a woman in the White House.

Two-thirds of respondents, 66 percent, said that there was a some chance they would vote for Senator Barack Obama, a black lawmaker in his first term. And 62 percent said the same when asked about Senator Hillary Clinton. Both are Democrats. No Republican woman or African American has entered the campaign.

When asked about a possible Hispanic candidate, 81 percent said they were ready to vote for one, but only 39 percent said the country was ready for a Hispanic president. That represents bad news for the only Hispanic candidate so far in the race, Democrat Bill Richardson.

In a head-to-head competition, the poll showed Clinton leading Obama 56 to 33 percent.

The Newsweek magazine poll was conducted by the Princeton Institute July 2-3 among 1,002 persons at least 18 years of age. The overall margin of error for the survey is plus or minus four percentage points.

The election for US president will be held in November 2008.

The only Democrat that can lose in November is Hillary “No Values” Clinton.

It’s entirely possible she would not carry a single Southern state, and running against Giuliani, might even lose New York and California.

She’s a candidate in the Kerry mold–a fake centrist with a liberal voting record, EXCEPT for when it really matters like voting against invading Iraq, when she gutlessly caved.

Unlike Edwards, she still refuses to admit that vote was a mistake.

Hillary Clinton is only passionate about . . . . Hillary Clinton. Everything else is just politics as usual.

Even if we concede that the war was “just for oil” the reasoning you use here is still false.

Those kids wouldn’t be getting shot at so that some guy can make 400 million a year.

Those kids would be getting shot at so that our economy which is reliant upon a transportation system which needs oil, manufacturing which needs oil, and energy which needs oil to provide us with cheaper products and many other things doesn’t crash or have prices sky rocket.

    Oil is not evil.

Oil is what powers our lives and the things we use.

To sit here and pretend like it is wrong to want or need oil is an example of your ignorance or simple immaturity.

We need not concede that this “war” is “just for oil” because it isn’t.

Before the retaliatory strike on 9/11 against US foreign policy, oil was cheap and hovering around 28 dollars a barrel.

    Year 2001 Average $28

    2002 Average $28

    2003 Average $28

    2004 Average $48

    2005 Average $70 [ threat of atomic war ]

    2006 Average $80

    2007 Average $70

    http://futures.tradingcharts.com/hist_CO.html

[ change year on chart ]

The threat from Israeli Zionists backed by Bush to use atomic weapons on Iran caused oil to jump, as traders became nervous about shortages if the Israelis made good on their threat to create all out war in the Middle East.

Hey folks, what do you think about Governor “Do Nothing’s” latest statement of brillance? The Topeka Capital Journal is running a story in which she says that gas prices won’t rise because of the Coffeyville Resources Refinery shutting down last week in the floods of Southeast Kansas. I heard from my cousin that gas went to 3.23$ a gallon in Wichita today. When I was their Tuesday night it was 2.85$. Thats .38 cents in four days. Think the fawning press will call her on it? Not likely. The WE won’t even run the story for heavens sake. If a, God forbid, conservative republican made such a ignorant statement the ridicule would echo from Goodland to Baxter Springs. At least she didn’t make any stupid statements about how handicapped she is with part of our National Guard fighting in Iraq like she did after the Greensburg tornado.

So I’m thinking that your 38 cent (that’s $0.38, fyi you geneyus) bump does more for your hard-on for Sebelius than it does any harm to SE Kansans. Much less all us voters-who-could-potentially-get-royally-pissed-at-our-Guv in Wichita.

In Oct. ‘06 Overall, 69% of voters approve of Sebelius’ job performance; more than one-third (37%) say they “strongly approve.”

That must really stick in yer craw. A “do-nothing” Governor?? HA!!

    Hank and Nathan–

You are entirely correct that oil is not evil and is essential to the modern industrial state we find ourselves in.

HOWEVER, control of oil is control of money, vast amounts of money.

As for “when will we see the oil,” the oil doesn’t need to be pumped and sold for it to have a huge impact on the world markets, as we’re seeing now.

It can help raise prices by simply being kept out of the marketplace. That’s why OPEC was started, so producers could control production and force prices up . . . BUT not so far up that Hugo Chavez’s gummy tar oil becomes an economic viable competitor.

We invaded to CONTROL the oil. Not necessarilly to pump it and sell it any time soon.

  28. Posted July 7, 2007 at 8:51 pm | Permalink

    Ken S.

Citing factors we can’t control (fires and hurricanes) does not mean that there are no factors we CAN control.

For instance, the two BILLION dollars a week we spend to control Iraqi oil could be spent developing wind power, hydrogen cars, super NaS batteries and fusion nuclear power right here.

    Nope.

Worst President Ever would rather feed his cronies at the gov’t trough.

He had to flee his home because it was stolen by Israelis. He later joined a militant organization and was arrested and beaten so severely by the Israelis that some of his teeth fell out of his head.

But I don’t hate all Jews like you do.

Some of the most important voices AGAINST Zionism and war in general have been Jews–Noam Chomsky, Saul Alinsky, Elie Weisel come to mind.

Just because Israel engages in genocide against Palestine is no reason to believe that genocide was NOT done to Jews in Europe from the Spanish Inquisition to Nazism.

All this would be perfectly reasonable to a reasonable man.

But you are not a reasonable man–you’re a hate-filled crank.
