FIREWORKS
Not guns, not thunder, but a clutter of clouded drums That announce a fiesta: abruptly, fiery needles Circumscribe on the night boundless chrysanthemums. Softly, they break apart, they flake away, where Darkness, on a svelte hiss, swallows them. Delicate brilliance: a bellflower opens, fades, In a sprinkle of falling stars. Night absorbs them With the sponge of her silence- (Babette Deutsch)
Bush/Cheney Should Resign

Fireworks in the neighborhoods disturb the peace, pollute the air and drive many many pets intoclosets and in general a very nervous frenzy. Not fair!

It was well written I must admit,
But it is incredibly weak in certitude, factual account and method. Sort of like the Democratic Party.
I don’t think it should be impossible to take the dogs into the house for a couple nights, or if this isn’t possible, insert soft foam blocks into their ears, assuming that you know how to cut the foam to appropriate size, and how to extract the plugs. Or give them a little OTC Benadryl or a prescription sedative.
July 4th is supposed to be a celebration of freedom. Andover allows in-town flying and popping fireworks on your own property. So do Tulsa and OKC. I don’t know about KC proper, but there are at least two open-year-round fireworks stores on the I-70 east of town, which implies Missourians support fireworks. I bought some good ones in Arkansas in the 80s.
This is as American as apple pie. Too bad Wichitans have to do their launches furtively, with an eye open for police and fire department ticket-writers.
A WSU sociologist should study why Wichita’s leaders have a peculiar nanny attitude and why other cities in our region’s leaders don’t.
I really wanted to post a link to this article:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/26/science/26devo.html?ex=1183694400&en=37817153718e6303&ei=5070
The gist of it is that researchers are finding that evolution can occur far more rapidly than ever previously imagined. This is due to the fact that genes that regulate body-part development can be expressed at widely varying levels. For example African cichlid fish can be bread to develop different types of jaws to feed on different kinds of available foods. The gene involved is found widely in nature. Darwin’s hard-shell-seed-cracking finches could have evolved strong specialized beaks in less than a decade, rather than over millenia.
Some scientists believe that fish may have built-in genetic capacity to change swimming fins to walking feet.
These new discoveries might ultimately allow reconciliation of evolutionary theory with intelligent design theory insofar there are genes that are latent, and become activated in response to environmental changes. In essence, it is now beginning to appear that organisms, perhaps all living things, are prepared in advance to change, if and when circumstances warrant it. The capacity for morphologic/anatomic change, and hence behavioral change as well, appears to be imbedded in living organisms’ DNA.
” I don’t think it should be impossible to take the dogs into the house for a couple nights”
Probably not, but in my neighborhood it’s not just a couple of nights. It’s days and nights. Firework season starts here from the time they go on sale until a couple of days after the 4th. And let’s talk about the debris that the fireworks leaves behind in my yard and the street.
” Too bad Wichita’s have to do their launches furtively, with an eye open for police and fire department ticket-writers.”
The type of fireworks that you are talking about would have never been made illegal if so many adults and children hadn’t been seriously hurt due to their carelessness.
Enjoy the holiday MPS.
delores, are you saying that people in Andover, and hundreds of other Kansas communities, and in Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas are more competent than Wichitans? If your argument is that they tolerate more injuries, that would be interesting. More masculine societies tolerate more physical risks. More effeminate societies tolerate less physical risks.
This is actually the matter at hand. I just wanted to see if anyone here could figure it out. Fireworks are a guy thing. Not that girls can’t enjoy them, but the overwhelming majority of fireworks launchers are boys and men.
I don’t know why Wichita has an effeminate dominant culture, but the anti-fireworks law is highly demonstrative. Boys, your mommy doesn’t want you firing these dangerous things off. Your dad doesn’t have a problem with them.
On too many days of fireworks, you can have a law that penalizes fireworks other than on July 3-4 and Jan 31. Establish a hotline for homeowners to call on illegal days.
Cleanups can be handled by neighbors, particularly those with male kids.
Good point, maybe we need to feminize the world and it might be a better place.
Most women are prisoners of their emotions and capitive to their feelings. As such, they are too willing to compromise and they are unable to think coldy and rationally. The founding fathers were wise when they forbade women from voting or holding public office. :)
Add to that, a sexist misogynist as well, Mr. Slaughter.
“A WSU sociologist should study why Wichita’s leaders have a peculiar nanny attitude and why other cities in our region’s leaders don’t.”
Uh, because they are SO willing to follow the likes of terry, joe and phred? They dont think on their own, they just go every sunday and are TOLD what to think?
“More masculine societies tolerate more physical risks. More effeminate societies tolerate less physical risks.”
So… if the bushies are “uber masculine” I guess that explains george and dick’s excellent military adventures in the middle east?
Risk analysis is feminine? I guess so, since these “boys” clearly dont give a DAMN about risk unless it is “risk” to their fortunes.
I guess they lump “post war planning” into the girly “risk” catagory? ‘Cause they damn sure didnt do any of THAT either. Afraid it would look girly I guess and then they’d lose the NRA and all…
So… how’s that “damn the torpedos” uber male attitude working out for this nation?
Big eye roll. Jesus WEPT!
To use the language of the repukes here..
I guess that makes Jesus, with his “girly” attitudes about compassion and charity and do no harm must be a “pussy” too?
I think schooley has seen “animal house” one too many times…
Given that kansas takes in more federal dollars than it sends to washington, I guess the entire STATE has a “nanny” attitude?
Please take care of me. SO much for the masculinity of kansas….
Women and castrated liberal men choose to empathise with terrorists and criminals and gang members. Real men, with half a brain and more than a thible full of testosterone in them would eradicate such threats.
The problem with our rotten, christian, “democratic” system is that it is FEMININE in the extreme.
I guess that “masculine” attitude is why the Republicans care so little about the environment, eh?
If you’re a big tough John Wayne type, why worry about poisoned rivers and air, just suck it up like a MAN, right?
Christ.
So… how’s the testosterone laden war in iraq going?

Unless he’s working shift work. Then he’s just liable to head out on the street and make the last big bang of the next 8 hours be the sound of popping a cap in your bad ass.
I guess it could be that non-working mothers who wanted to protect their sons from all harm pushed for heavy regulation of fireworks within the city limits. That said, I certainly don’t think all the harm that could come to boys firing fireworks without supervision are limited to the fireworks alone.
I think it’s reasonably likely that all the roolz are left over from the days when the number of day-sleeping, night-working men and women who worked in healthcare and heavy mfg and who lived downtown dominated that sub-population.
I was never in favor of the Iraq war. Our troops should be here, greasing gang members and illegals.
However, the war is being conducted in a democratic and feminine manner. Policy seems to be more concerned with civilian casualties, social work, public opinion and pr, than with wiping out the enemy.
That’s the problem, men have mucked up the world since we started walking upright. Time for the women to get it together and take the lead. I wish Hilary wasn’t running, she has a snowball’s chance. If the democrats nominate her..it’ll be the repukes for 8 more years, and I’ll seriously consider moving out of the country.
So Sgt, is the solution to wipe out the rest of the world? That’s about what you’d have to do. Such a simple mind…are you sure you don’t work for Bush$Co?
“than with wiping out the enemy.”
I thought Bush was “liberating” the Iraqi people and “spreading democracy” and all that.
Who knew that we had declared war on the Iraqi people and we need to wipe them out?
Yeah, all those Iraqi civilians are a much bigger threat than Bin Laden…even George says he doesn’t worry about him anymore.
Ever since I can remember in this City, it has been run sort of like an old time Baptist Church… The men forbid the women to hold any office in the Church… But without the women folk working behind the scenes, nothing would ever get done!!
Much of the “high society” of Wichita’s past, was done by the women… most of the “entertainment” in the city was done by women… Good heavens, the Eagle had one of the best GARDEN sections in five states… but written by a GUY…
The was the Hyptatia Club, 20th Century Club, The Little Theater… all headed by women…
Of course baseball was for the men and run by the men…
I can remember some of the old fashioned big parades… Mother knew most of the women who planned many of them….
So, yes, Wichita has had this strange historic “nanny” thing… But, I dont think it was all bad… Things are not nearly as well run now, as they were in the “nanny” days… But, yet, there is a more progressive “feel” here now… except when that Baptist mentality takes over on liquor sales, and gambling casinos…
All in all, I think the City still has a fairly bright future…

Here’s a novel idea – those that made the mess, clean it up! This is called personal responsibility.
Hey, folks, not wanting to make anyone jealous, but I have a couple of fantastic slabs of ribs on the smoker. They are smoking up beautifully – carmel brown on the outside and smoky pink on the inside. The smoke flavor is driving my neighbors crazy – I have had many hints that they need an invite, but we’re going to my kids new house to celebrate their closing.
Too bad!!!!!
I would tell you my secret recipe for the rub, but then I would have to kill you.
(triple wink!!!)
What a day! Happy Fourth to you and yours – have fun – party hard – be safe.
Thank God for America!!!!!!!!!!!
How fortunate Americans are that our Founding Fathers picked a national holiday to declare our independence!
And itsn’t it amazing how Mt. Rushmore, a natural stone formation, looks so much like Jefferson, Washington, Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt!
It’s obviously a sign from God that Lincoln was shot in Ford’s Theatre and Ford was almost shot getting into a Lincoln.
Lee Harvey Oswald shot Kennedy from a warehouse and was captured in a theatre; John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln in a theatre and was captured in a warehouse.
18 months before he shot Lincoln, John Wilke booth was performing in in Monroe, Maryland. 18 months before he was shot, JFK was inside Marylin Monroe.
Coinsidence? I think not!
Another victory for CC in Texas
“The husband entered the store with a handgun and confronted one of the robbers, witnesses said. The suspect allegedly pointed his gun at the husband and the husband opened fire.Police said the husband had a concealed handgun permit.”

The Iraqi people were not our enemy when we invaded.
Hey Dude, the animation is fantastic!!!
That was funny.

Judging from your posts, obviously no brains…OD’d on testosterone.
Talk is cheap.
