Media have focused of late on Sen. Hillary Clinton’s continued lead in polls among the Democratic presidential contenders, planting the suggestion of her inevitability as the party’s nominee.
But it’s too early for polls to matter much. What does matter is Sen. Barack Obama’s latest fundraising totals, which are astounding.
Obama raised a whopping $31 million in the past three months, breaking all previous fundraising records for a Democratic candidate in a nonelection year and leaving Clinton trailing at $21 million.
As a gauge of his political capital, it shows Obama has money in the bank and will be able to compete toe-to-toe with Clinton. Moreover, the breadth of his donors — more than 250,000, the majority of them small donors who likely will give again — suggests the makings of a powerful grassroots organization.
This race isn’t over yet. Not by a long shot.

There is a backdoor consideration which might elect Obama, that being what I’ll refer to as the “Hamas factor”: When the Palestinians elected Abass to be Prime Minister of Palestine, Israel refused to meet with him {Ariel Sharon saying that Abass was irrelevant }. That left no other alternative than to elect Hamas.
As our elected officials will not carry out the mandate from the People, Obama probably would, not carrying the political baggage as do the “others.” The “electorate” might just see him that way.
I’ve given three times to Obama’s campaign and until then I had never given to a political campaign in my life.
I’m a small donor, but it adds up and hopefully, it will all end with the election of Mr. Obama.
Hey Andrea,
I’m just curious, why Obama?
The fact that this is your first campaign donation doesn’t mean much if we don’t know how old you are.
How old are you?
Hank
Hank, Shame on you.
Is that really you Ed?
You’re actually able to post a comment without some idiotic statement about Israel being a terrorist state?
Why, may I ask do you say “shame” on me?
I would like to have a dialog with an Obama supporter. I actually admire someone like Obama with the cajones to take on the ‘chosen one’.
Hank
Obama bin Loaded. :)
“This race isn’t over yet. Not by a long shot.”
Thank you, Rick Ramano.
fleet,
If you are going to be a smartass, at least learn how to spell and get your names correct first. It’s “Ray Romano”.
Sheesh. No wonder you can’t have an adult discourse…
I haven’t given to either Clinton or Obama, but I will eventually give to one of them. I just can’t decide who is more electable. My gut tells me Obama would do a better job just because he is so inspiring. Clinton, on the other hand, is too hawkish for me, but she does have so much experience, and she also has on her team the best ambassador we could ever have, Bill Clinton. I worry though with Clinton that she attacks too many haters, but at the same time people come out of the woodwork for her. I think she could really mobilize minorities and lower income people, just like she did in New York. Funny thing is, if Obama ends up being the nominee, he should have the same effect on mobilizing people, I hope.I am just so conflicted here.
I like what Chris Rock said about Obama, being asked all the time if America is ready for a black president, and Chris said, of course America is ready, heck, we elected a retarded one – that being W of course.
Interesting post Conflicted,
Maybe, you should try and come up with an issue or two that is important to you and then compare Clinton and Obamo with respect to how they stand on those issues.
Then you would be able to decide on a candidate based on objective considerations vs. subjective feelings and hunches. You then would be able to decide which one to support intelleigently.
However, I must warn you, if you start considering issues you may have to consider candidates that are not connected with the DNC.
Hank
Andrea sounds like a kid who thinks that it owuld be kewl to have a president who resembles the rappers she sees on MTV.
Hank – I am happy to answer your questions and I will even go further than my age. I am 32. I am white. I am Protestant. I am married. I have two kids. I have a college degree. I work outside the home.
“Why Obama?” you asked. I like Obama because he seems to be a real person, not just a politician. I know, all politicians start out seeming like real people and then morph into something other than the “dedicated advocates for the little people” we thought they would be – but I can always hope. Obama isn’t part of the good ole boy network of old money. He came from humble beginnings, got an education and made his own way. Obama doesn’t seem as rehearsed as the others and most importantly, his brand of politics offers me hope. I hope for a better tomorrow for myself and my kids.
Why not “the chosen one” as you say? Hillary is too polarizing. People either love her or hate her – even Democrats. She isn’t the best candidate for an election because she is too divisive even among her own party members.
I am ready for a political revolution and a time when politicians have The People in mind – not themselves.
I am probably overly optimistic, but I really think Obama is a breath of fresh air.
Andrea – You hit the nail on the head!! Thank you.
I am a huge Bill Clinton fan, and would love to see a woman elected as President. However, Hilary Clinton is, as Andrea said, too polarizing, and inevitably we would have another GWB in the White House if she is our nominee. Plus, Obama has not been stained by politics yet. I like the fact that his resume is short, and he hasn’t had time to be brainwashed, or whatever happens when people go to D.C.
I also agree with Andrea and TDT.
There is something about Obama that is so inspiring, as the other poster said, just like a breath of fresh air. I agree about Hillary being too polarizing.
BTW – Hank, I am aligned with each of the candidates on the issues, except with Hillary on some issues, in particular the war. Her views on the war are too hawkish for me. I also worry about her inclinations to go to war with Iran. I want to like Hillary because similar to the other poster, I adore Bill, and I would also love to see a woman president. However, I worry that she is too risky because of the haters she attracts from all parties.
It seems likely that if Obama is the nominee, he will pick Edwards as his running mate. They have aligned themselves and are careful to gentle in many ways with each other during the debates. They seem to have an understanding. I think they would make an strong ticket.
Andrea, TDT, and ConflictedYou must take everything thrown at you from the fundies with a grain of salt. You see, they are bitter that their “King” has exposed the reich wing for what it is, a bunch of intolerant, greedy, god freaks. He has wasted political clout and walks on the Constitution daily. So, excuse their ignorance and intolerance of your opinions. They don’t like anybody that does not preach the hate of the reich.

So says Satan’s disciple.
Republican knows all about Satan’s disciple. To be one is to know one.

he favors amnesty for illegalshe is favor of complete gun controlhe favors appeasing raghead terroristshe has encouraged blacks to riot if they don’t get yet more taxpayer funded government handoutshe is in favor of evil affirmative action, big surprise

All of his suits smell like cigarette smoke.
A whole lot of politically aspiring idiots who poll well end up losing. Reference Harry S. Truman and that little glitch with the Chicago Tribune. Harry was anything but popular. But, when the dust settled on that fateful Wednesday morning, Harry S. Truman was the President of the United States of America!
It’s like this:A) America is more than ready for a woman President, just not Hillary. Ditto Condi;B) America cringes at the potential Presidential pattern of Bush41, Clinton42, Bush43, Clinton44. If there is a presidential devolutional behavior pattern, Hillary could comparatively become to Big Dog what Dumya has proven to be to Poppy, which, during these globally turbulent times, may not bode well for us AT ALL;
C) No matter how important it is for America to demostrate earnest commitment to promoting gender and ethnic diversity, this is not a race limited to just Hillary and Obama. GROW UP! The DEM field is filled with qualified solid candidates who actually stand for issues far more substantial than the redundant ones beaten to death by both Hillary and Obama. Dennis Kucinich, Bill Richardson, and John Edwards are not chopped liver;
and D) Al Gore is going to eclipse THEM ALL when he does announce his candidacy next year anyway, many polls already showing him to be the solid number 3 fave in DNC popularity.
Americans not only want to elevate the Presidency of the United States of America from the abysmal status of simpleton event in the Special Olympics (a feat well within the scope of Hillary’s capabilities), but we also want to experience change, growth, and progress. Hillary is a baby-booming Goldwater Repug turned dim-Centrist, making her defeatable for near-hypocrisy and UTTER shallowness. She’s too wishy-washy on too many important issues. WORST, she supported the invasion of a country that did not attack America based on the lies and talking points of a Dimwit she hasn’t put enough effort into impeaching. She won’t even stand flat-footed enough to demand a new and thorough investigation of Tuesday, 11SEP2001, and she reps NEW YORK. We’re sick and tired of her politically expedient fence-riding, seemingly more fearful of neo-con repercussions than she is concerned about the needs of the voters. These pollsters have yet to ask potential supporters if they’re supporting Hill because they long for the prosperity and economic growth of Bill. Well, now, Bill only gets 8 years. And, there’s no guarantee we’ll get from Hill what we enjoyed with Bill. Furthermore, I personally find Big Dog’s recent chumminess with that old fart Poppy Bush to be suspiciously disturbing.
We the PEOPLE of a MOST DISGUSTED NATION are not as easily led a herd of mindless sheep as the media and their jaded poll cronies would have the world believe. The Nation has set an cease-and-desist-date of Tuesday, 04NOV2008 on the National Error Correction time table for ENDING some of this menacing crap created by these ethically indifferent and morally depraved professional DC Swap RATS who have forgotten they were actually elected by us to REPRESENT US, not to greedily garner ungodly fortunes for themselves for serving everyone’s interests but ours. Wednesday, 05NOV2008 will be the stunning dawn of a brand new era as each angry concession speech is given. With any luck, New York will still love Hillary enough to re-elect her to the Senate in 2010.
Nice comments rage, except for the inclusion of the GORACLE. :)
“Clinton, on the other hand, is too hawkish for me, but she does have so much experience,”
Conflicted -
What experience would that be?
She’s a second term junior senator who rode her husband’s coattails to office. Knowing she could not get elected in the state where she was a resident for most of her life she parachuted, carpetbag in hand, into New York, not to represent New Yorkers, but to run for president, trading on her husband’s name yet again.
Where is this vaunted “experience?”
Way to go Obama.

I really don’t think the majority of Americans want a “Bush clone” as the next president. We’ve been there, done that.
“She’s a second term junior senator who rode her husband’s coattails to office” Posted by: GMC70
I seem to remember the wife of a Kansas senator who became a junior senator from North Carolina. She hadn’t lived in that state for years and years and years. Dole didn’t move back to Kansas after he quit the Senate, why should the Clintons have moved back to Arkansas?
Elizabeth Dole is heads and shoulders above Hillary Clinton in integrity, character and as a person.
Maybe so Republican, but it has nothing to do with the fact that she ran for the Senate in a state that she had not lived in for years. If Senator Clinton can be called a “Carpetbagger” then Senator Dole is also one.
“then Senator Dole is also one.”
Wasn’t Mrs. Dole actually from NC?
“then Senator Dole is also one.”
Wasn’t Mrs. Dole actually from NC?
She moved from North Carolina to Washington, DC in 1966. In 2002 Dole moved to North Carolina to seek election to the U.S. Senate. Now that’s thirty-six years that she didn’t live in NC. I have lived in Kansas for 40 years. I tell people I’m from Denver originally.
Okay, maybe I should not have called her a “Carpetbagger”, since she lived in NC from the time she was born until 1966. And by definition Senator Clinton was a “Carpetbagger” when she ran for the Senate in New York.
Sorry
Hank, If you weren’t so paranoid about your precious State of Trouble, you’d have caught the humor in suggesting “shame on you” for asking the girl her age.
Touchy touchy
delores:
1) As has been pointed out, E. Dole was actually FROM N. Carolina, though she hadn’t lived there in years. Ms. Clinton was from New York, exactly, when?
2) E. Dole isn’t running for president. Just when does “yea, but [insert name here] did it first” cease to be a valid excuse – first grade, second grade? What others did or did not do isn’t relevant. Ms. Clinton carpetbagged into NY. Whether others have done so before is beside the point.
3) Just what does any of that have to do with “experience,” the quality touted by Conflicted above?
GMC70 -guess you didn’t catch my “sorry”.
“You then would be able to decide which one to support intelleigently.”
