Lugar, Voinovich and now Domenici

One by one, the GOP lions in the Senate are pulling away from the White House on Iraq. The latest is Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., who said Thursday that he wants to see combat operations end and U.S. troops heading home by spring. His change of heart represents another vote of confidence in the Iraq Study Group (he supports a bipartisan bill based on its findings). It also suggests the president cannot count on GOP lawmakers to have his back come September, if the much-touted reports on the troop surge include calls for more time. For now, all eyes are on Sen. John Warner, R-Va.

Heh. I smell right-wing fear. Fear of the electorate. Fear of losing their jobs over this war.

    Good.

Oh my God. A Republican who can read more than “My Pet Goat”!

I agree Tom, I smell fear on their part. I wonder if Dominici is up for re-election this cycle?

    Ben,

Domenici’s last race was in 2002, so yep, he’s up.

Oddly enough, Lugar and Voinovich are _not_ up in 08.

If this keeps up, we’ll be able to see who the Republicans of concience are, as opposed to the spineless bastards who kiss Bush & Cheney’s backsides.

Lugar and Voinovich have always been somewhat independant so it is less of a surprise to see them break with the Bushbots. Dominici, on the other hand, has been a brownnose Bushie all along; it is much more interesting to see him desert the sunken ship.

Of course, it comes as no surprise that diehard Bushbots find this all to be a ‘bore’

In “Sicko” a French politician points out that France could never abolish free healthcare, because the people want it, and government there fears the people, as the people hold ultimate power, and know it. American people hold ultimate power, but they don’t know it. They fear the government.

Americans fear for their jobs, because unlike French workers who are guaranteed employment American workers are not. If Peugeot tried to cut back its workforce, or convert unionized jobs to non-unionized jobs, hundreds of thousands of people would fill the streets in protest, not just autoworkers but others too who understand that they could be next.

The average Frenchman/Frenchwoman is significantly better educated than the average American in history, which is important, because “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”The average American can tell you who our first president was, but can’t tell you who the leading Federalists were, or what their role was in creating our Constitution. Or who rejected it until a Bill of Rights was incorporated.

The average American knows that we saved France from Hitler, but he or she doesn’t know that France saved our revolutionaries from King George, not just by bottling up Cornwallis at Yorktown, but by supplying us with arms and ammunition that we could not sufficiently produce and using their influence with Native Americans to discourage many tribes from allying with the British.

The average Frenchperson is far better versed in political philosophy–the average American can’t answer a basic question about the Greek Plato or the Englishman Locke–or the American Ralph Waldo Emerson for that matter.

The average Frenchperson is better versed in English than the average American is versed in French.

According the the Program for International Student Assessment, run by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, French 15 year olds beat American 15 year olds in problem solving and mathematics by significant margins, and tie them in science.

    Education matters.

It is notable that Europeans hate it when our president visits, because streets from the airport all the way to where he is staying get blocked off to protect him from terrorists, and trying to get to work or school or shopping is a mess. This isn’t necessary when other nations’ leaders come to town.

Pete Domenici was the same Republican that threw his weight around and got the lawyer fired in that Attorney General’s office scandal. So why does he Domenici think he is so pure now?

Well asked. Dominici is hoping the attorney firings are sufficiently arcane that people won’t notice. I think he knows his days in the senate may be numbered.

The REAL reason for all this public reversal is because The Party knows that the American people are fed up and they are about to take a blood bath next November at the polls. And their leader Fuhrer Bush does not have to face the voters again. People out here are seething about things that are going on and the GOP Reich is about to be dumped intop the ashes of history if they don’t change. In fact, they may be dumped anyway even if they do run a moderate like Rudy because the Reich Wing of that party won’t vote for him.

That is because this is by DESIGN. Not unlike Stalinist Russia or Nazi Germany, American children are indoctrinated beginning at a very young age to worship things like Religion and Patriotism. We are taught that good Christians and good patriots do not challenege authority. We are taught that we do not question The Fuhrer or his actions. Remember he is there to protect us and if he has to suppress us to do it, we readily accept that. Americans, for all our “bravery” on the battlefields of the world are basically dumb ass cowards here at home. The government invents a boogeyman (Communist, Terrorist) and we all hide under our beds. But there is hope. Some people seem to be waking up. You can fool about 30% of the American people ALL the time. You can fool about 60% SOME of the time. But you cannot, thus far, fool ALL of us ALL the time.

    Very telling indeed.

    Tom,

It means they haven’t received their excuses yet. Weekend after a mid-week holiday… They’ll have the talking points by early next week. It won’t make any difference, but they won’t know that so they’ll be in here arguing and ignoring facts and truth.
