Would temporary workers hurt or help American workers?

Include the National Urban League in the groups opposing the immigration reform bill. The Urban League’s primary objection is the temporary worker provision, which it argues needs to be more narrowly tailored and include a requirement that American workers be given first right to jobs. National Urban League president and CEO Marc H. Morial said in a statement: “There is a dire need for the nation to invest heavily in efforts to recruit, train, prepare and place American workers for available jobs prior to allowing businesses to seek temporary worker visas for the same jobs.”
Meanwhile, the White House issued a report Tuesday from its Council of Economic Advisers saying that “immigration has a positive effect on the American economy as a whole and on the income of native-born American workers.” It argued that immigrants enhance the productivity of native-born workers and increase their earnings an estimated $37 billion a year, the New York Times reported. However, other studies have concluded that immigrants reduce earnings of native-born workers, particularly low-skilled workers.

They must be measuring the economic impact by the upperclass employing illegals to do their mundane domestic tasks.Rich Republicans are never so compansionate conservative as when they are giving away the employment of the lower classes. Bush wants to set up conditions to benefit rich repubs. long after he’s dead and gone!

I have SEEN it in action the illegals running down the price of labor for those who are legally born citizens.

I agree that this is just another way to put more money in the pockets of employers. Mexico needs to quit living off of us and stand up and fight for their own economy.

American jobs should belong to Americans.

One of the nagging questions that will take time to sort out is who and what is the real driving mechanism behind the illegal immigration.I work with a Hispanic supervisor, don’t get me wrong, he not my supervisor, I just work with him.I have questioned his management tactics as being somewhat all too willing to violate labor work ethics.Who are these employers? How do they gain employment for others? Is it by word of mouth from friends and families?I have realized that the racisms involved immigration is not one race against another race but racism against their own kind, a war on Class. The majority of employers that are bringing in the illegal immigrants are they themselves of the Hispanic race here and abroad and all too willing to violate labor work ethics. They are taking advantages of the less educated immigrants by deprivation, forcing immigration, and then abusing them thru pacification. All the while taking in as much money as they can from the loopholes in our laws and the lack enforcement of our labor laws.

Wiseman,It is capitalism. To the illegal, mostly Hispanic workers, $3/hr for 60 hours a week means they earn $180. They want $180 and cannot earn it otherwise, so they are willing to work.

If, for example, an illegal Asian person is willing to do the work for $2/hr, the company will hire them.

If no one will do the work at those prices, and the company has a demand for the work to be done, they will have to pay more.

To curb a large part of the illegal immigration problem, the Gov’t really needs to do a better job enforcing its minimum wage laws. Then, no one would have an arguement that companies hire illegals because they can pay them less. This would put a floor on the supply/demand economics of the cheap labor part of illegal immigration.

There would need to be an anonymous number illegals could call to report minimum wage law violations, to help compliance with it.

America already has a temporary work program. Foreigners can apply for a work visa and come to the country to work legally. The Republicans want to alter the plan because currently those with a visa have to be treated like everyone else in regards to wages and workplace safety.

They’re already beating the manufacturing workforce to death with temps, AMERICAN temps. I work for a high tech company and in manufacturing, 3/4 of our workers are temps. You can’t hardly get a manufacturing job without starting as a temp in Wichita. And temps in manufacturing don’t get paid well, in most cases just a few cents above minimum wage.

That’s all we need…a bunch of Mexicans willing to work for peanuts.

My thoughts on the matter are similar with XXX. That is, temps are an excuse for employers to not pay any benefits/higher wages or have any long employee relationship, so accrued benefits can be accumulated. It’s rather sleazy in my opinion.

I’m far from being pro-illegal…but, I would argue that the illegals don’t have a significant impact on the price of labor.

The work they do is mostly unskilled, and employers have a very difficult time finding workers willing to do the work for an afforable price. They do the work that most Americans won’t do – especially at that wage.

Conversely, the illegals have little or no impact on skilled labor wages – or on jobs that require a working knowledge of the english language. Even fast food jobs are paying $8/hr.

  18. Posted June 21, 2007 at 6:34 pm | Permalink

Everyone has this wrong: Mexicans don’t want to be Americans. They want to make a living. A HUGE guest worker program is the answer. The only rule should be a job when waiting when the worker crosses. If workers were allowed to cross the border freely, the problem would stabilize. The way it is now, illegals are trapped here. “America? You only have two nice days a year,” is basically the attitude. So exploit it. But drop this “best country in the world” crap and this amnesty stuff. Let workers work, and the problem will solve itself.

“Crony capitalism” or capitalist cronyism is a pejorative term that asserts that a particular capitalist economy may depend on an extremely close relationship between private business and the state institutions of politics and government, rather than by the espoused “equitable” concepts such as the free market, open competition, and economic liberty. …en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crony_capitalism

Interesting viewpoints on immigration. Wonder how many people who blog here have ACTUALLY be affected by an illegal aliens employment? If it directly effects your employment, maybe more school/training is needed to elevate your marketability in the job market. Because if it does effect you, appears maybe your aspirations are no better then the people you want out of the country.

Pregnant Woman Delivers Baby After Assault

    POSTED: 11:53 am EDT June 19, 2007UPDATED: 6:11 pm EDT June 19, 2007

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County police are asking for your help finding the man who sexually assaulted a pregnant woman inside her apartment, while her 2-year-old child was nearby.

Investigators said the suspect knocked on the victim’s door Sunday at the Gwinnett Place Apartments on Sweetwater Road in Lawrenceville just after the woman’s husband left for work.

The suspect asked for directions and then forced his way inside her apartment and sexually assaulted her, while her 2-year-old child was in another room.

The woman was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center to be checked out and while there, she went into premature labor. She delivered a healthy baby girl.

Investigators said both the mother and newborn are doing well. The 2-year-old was not hurt during the altercation.

At this time there is no solid description of the offender. He is only described as a young adult Hispanic male.

Police said the victim is cooperating with investigators and when the victim is physically able, investigators will attempt to create a composite sketch of the offender.http://www.wsbtv.com/news/13529145/detail.html?rss=atl&psp=news

Once an illegal is entitled to all of the benefits on being a citizen, how long do you think he will be willing to do the work that others don’t want to do? More likely they will be looking to move up the economic ladder just as fast as they can, whether it be manfufacturing or other skilled labor. More competition in those areas will drive down wages and benefits. It’s not like we don’t have competition already with jobs being outsourced, we certainly don’t need the workers ‘insourced’.

They have difficulty finding qualified applicants because they want degrees. How about they train the people to move up in the company without degrees?

If they wanted the help bad enough, they could make it happen. And it would help those who wanted to work for it.

Too much emphasis is on schooling, employers don’t want to put any effort out into training their own employees to move up.

The United States is not a lazzis faire unregulated capitalist system. While there are those neo cons and corporate type Republicans whos wet dream is to take the country back to the bad old days of the 1930s, it AIN’T gonna happen. In fact, there are many of us- me included- that want to move the country more towards the European capitalist-socialist model with more regulation than we have now to rein in the corporations and expand the rights of workers within the framework of enterprise and capitalism.

To be fair, the Democrats had a hand in it too. It was Clinton that signed NAFTA and I have never forgiven him for that which is another reason i will not be voting for his wife. It was also southern Democrats that did all they could to destroy the labour movement in this country by virtually making it impossible to organize a bargaining unit in a non union business and with “right to work” laws that only serve the interest of the rich corporations at the expense of the workers. Now I will say that at least many of the new Democrats seem to be trying to atone for the sins of their fathers. Right now, the Free Choice Act is up in the Senate and this is badly needed pro labour legislation that we will hopefully pass.

I’m a low class worker US born. After reading this. I do think that some here are out of date on there info. Most mexican workers get treated better then most US workers.Where I work in ga. In a major carpet mill. Just my plant alone has over 200 workers and maybe 20 are US born and thats at 12.79 a hour. Some even sleep on the job and noone does anything about it.From what my manger told me is even if he knows someone is a illegal and truns it in that the top dogs tell him his not train to tell. To leave it alone. Most speak english but play like they dont. Even the US born mexcians get mad cause they know what there doing and have to translate for them. And as far as jobs US born dont want is crap. I know some that tried to get haired and has done the jobs before get told that there not hairing. Then hair four mexcians the next day.I will even go as far to tell you why. See if the person is illegal the company save money due to worker comp Insurance not being used and the medical Insurance not being used. Check the law suit that one major mill has going on thats just some of the crap thats going on. I beg and pray the goverment will open there eyes. Befor as one told me soon we will be the United states of Mexico.

Cause it keeps getting stolen by other mexcians. From what he tells me is that the illegals get a stolen ss number and your name clam max depentdents on the W2. So they do not have to pay taxes.SO they bring how gross pay eatch week i have seen there checks i bring home 300.00 for the same hr. and pay rate where there brining home 480.00 so 3$ hr. is not so true anymore .When the IRS catches up to them. They just quit get a new number and name. Now who is it hurting when a US born files income tax to find out they have to pay in cause some one used there number. And give this a thought if a crim happens a finger print is found and checked by the US data base but the guy was a illegal what happens then?

hmm thread looks dead.but I will add this anyway.Think about this for awhile. If I was the leader of country with light tan skin people. And I wanted to take a foothold. On the worlds 1st mega power the top dog .It would be easy. Send my army slowly to mexico. Then start sending the across the border. With the mexcians. So in turn in just about 2years. I could have my army in the USA. Tell them to get jobs and wait. Then when I have the force I need. Pick where I want my foot hold. And call in a air strike. Fly in weapons ,and tanks right behind the strike. The Usa can do nothing. Cause my ground army is in side the USA attacking at the same time. Now the USA god weapon the nukes. Is took out of play. We would never fire it at our self. I know its extream. But think how many cross every year? There was a movie put out a few years ago. That tells it good. Its called RED DAWN. Where the cubas and the russian teamed up. Cuba sent its army across the border slowly. They took high place jobs. When russia was ready nukes went offline. And a few states fell fast. Good movie for a what if. I just hope the homeland is thinking about it.
