In a Washington Post commentary, Sally Quinn paints a scenario in which Republicans take advantage of Vice President Dick Cheney’s problems by pushing him to retire now and installing an heir for 2008. She suggests Fred Thompson and writes, “Cheney is scheduled this summer for surgery to replace his pacemaker, which needs new batteries. So if the president is willing, and Republicans are able, they have a convenient reason to replace him: doctor’s orders.”

Aww but there is a problem… that damn little pesky Constitution that the Republicans despise so much…
“Amendment 25 - Presidential Disability and Succession1. In case of the removal of the President from office or of his death or resignation, the Vice President shall become President.
2. Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.”
Now does anybody really think that the Democrats in Congress and the Senate would vote to confirm Fred Thompson? The answer is NO. In fact they would specifically demand that any VP nominee NOT be a candidate for 2008. A few years ago, Bush could have pulled this off and I thought that he would. I thought that he would try to install his brother Jeb in that spot to give him a leg up on 2008. But now that the Bush name is down there by doggy dung in the polls, even Jeb knows it is over.
Under your scenerio above, I believe the only possibility would be Rudy “Put out the fire” Giuliani. Mr. G. has a tremendous resume of success in public service.
Many of our presidential candidates possess a law degree, a Senatorial position, a styled hair cut and dark suit suitable for speeches and burial — sorry not enough to be seriously considered.
Kev claims to be a moderate, but he sure writes a LOT like a far left Liberal.
I think Kev, you have too much confidence in your very weak Democratic Congress, you know the 23 percenters.
“Over about two decades of lobbying, Fred Thompson represented clients including Haitian Presidente Jean-Bertrand Aristide, Canadian-owned cable companies and a British reinsurance company.
From 1975 to 1992 Thompson worked as a lobbyist in Washington, D.C. representing such clients as Westinghouse, General Electric (the current corporate owner of the NBC Universal-NBC television network), and the Tennessee Savings and Loan League.
In 1982, Thompson lobbied the U.S. Congress for deregulation of the Savings and Loan (S&L) industry. His recommendations were incorporated in the Garn - St Germain Depository Institutions Act of 1982, which allowed thrifts to invest in potentially more profitable, but riskier, ventures; eliminated interest-rate ceilings on new accounts; and granted additional government support to ailing S&Ls. This Act was a contributing factor to the Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s.”
In 1991, Thompson began work with the Washington, D.C. firm of Arent, Fox, Kintner, Plotkin, & Kahn, representing overseas business entities as a registered foreign agent. These included a German mining company and Toyota Motors of Japan.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Thompson
Fred was a leading contributor to the savings and loan debacle and was a registered foreign agent? Boy, he sounds like the perfect republican candidate to me. Could we be looking at a Ronnie replay here?
At least he could “act” presidential, unlike the current pResident.
Nice resume’ XXX and welcome to the real world of employment.
Lots of lawyers take on International clients. What’s your point?
Being an attorney for someone doesn’t indicate complicity.
No way will Fred replace Dick. Thompson just looks tough and mean. Cheny is tough and mean. Besides, who wants a president named Fred? Really?
Think 1st: How does “Rudy” sound?
“Kev claims to be a moderate,…”
He’s no more moderate than I am. When someone lies, it’s less important to know there is a lie and more important to know why he lied. He’s ashamed to call himself Liberal. Can’t blame him there.
I think kev is correct, Thompson would have difficulty getting confirmed. Ford did not have presidential aspirations when he went in; he was universally respected. I don’t know that the same is true of Thompson.
That said, however, he does seem like the best choice. Perhaps if there were some sort of ‘quid pro quo’ that he would not run in 2008?
JWink - Rudy would have even more difficulty getting confirmed. Remember, this will have to be bi-partisan.

But it does take someone with less than low morals to take on a client in which the lawyer knows is not in the best interest of the American citizens. Take for example, Bob Dole lobbying for Dubai company wanting to take over the security of our ports.
The Republicans saw how fast the majority of Americans reacted to that stupid idea.
And yet the 25% supporters of Bush and Gang are still day dreaming that you actually still run the country. Wake up, Republican, your time of total control in Washington is over.
IF Cheney steps down, due to “Dr’s. Orders”, or whatever reason, Mr. Bush would do well to carefully select someone with a solid conservative stance, someone NOT a candidate for 2008, and just maybe a woman… say, Dr. Condi Rice? I have a hunch that might win bi-partisan approval.
Condi Rice? I seriously doubt she would be approved. She would wear the Iraq albatross around her neck.
Is former WY Senator Simpson still alive? Decent health?
Given the rancor in Washington right now, I doubt BUsh could nominate Harry Reid and get it approved by Congress
Hey, maybe he could talk his Dad and Bill Clinton into sharing the job, just for a year or so… He has sent them everywhere else!! LOL
His dad could serve, not clinton. Somehting about 2 terms and the COnstitution, something that acording to Kev, the Republicans hate.
Bush Sr. Interesting idea.
L J — That would be twice elected for President.. I dont think VP is limited to that, and especially not if it was appointed… Dad Bush is too old to run again, and Clinton CANT run again… Might be the safest place for both of them right now..
Bush should have replaced Cheney some time ago so the Repubs could have an incubent on the ‘08 ticket. Too late now.
Some friends of mine were talking about this one evening, and some of them had decided that Hillary could legally ask Bill to be her VP… since the Constitution only forbids some one from being ELECTED to more than two terms as President… Interesting thought.
Fleet — I honestly think it would depend totally on WHO Bush might appoint for VP, in a Cheney vacancy… IF it is the right person, not Fred or Rudy, it might actually work!!
Chas.
You could be right. It may be possible, the restriction is on the “elected” . But somehow I just don;t think it would fly.
I’m not sure it would either… but as I said, interesting thought. Actually, Bill would be a more likely candidate to be Sec. of State or something of that sort, given the way he is received in most nations of the world.
But if Cheney were replaced, who would run the nation?
At this early stage, Fred is the man.
And I had another hunch too… IF Edwards would get the Dem. nomination, he would do well to choose Hillary as VP… and not Obama or one of the others… He could then us Obama as one of his Cabinet members, or Chief of Staff, or something of that sort…
Good point Sol… But it would still be run by Rove, same as it is now LOL
Much as I do not like CLinton, that would actually be a more appropriate choice by Hillary if she would be elected. Actually, maybe any president. I think he is a consummate politician, but has little character.
Hey Fleet, maybe Tony Snow would be open to a short term job… sort of like what he has now???
Hillary would be an excellent choice for Edwards, but I think he has little chance of gaining the presidency.
“Hey Fleet, maybe Tony Snow would be open to a short term job…”
I am afraid any job Snow has will be short term.
L J I think you have to go back to IKE or maybe Ford, to find a president with character, dont you?? I sure cant remember any others in my lifetime… Reagan was a “character” but, so are all actors….
Very true Fleet…
Not gonna happen.
Why?
Because Cheney is running the freaking show.
That’s why Bush is so tongue-tied every time he tries to speak in public.
He’s thinking “what would Uncle Dick say?”
Cheney’s not leaving until President Cheney decides to leave.
Chas. You could be right, I regard reagan a little differently than you, but I do agree about Ike (as much as i know-he was before my time) and Ford. Ford took a great chance, and paid a huge price, to pardon nixon. Something that was hailed as a huge “fix” in those days, but hailed as country unifying today, even by those who disagree with it at the time. most of todays politicians are cut from a different cloth, most of which is not whole. :(
CapnAmerica-
You could be right. It has been repeatedly stated that Bush was a clever, macheivillian manipulator that has overtaken the whole country for his own purposes, or a bunbling clown. He obvously canot be both. Perhaps your proposition solves the mystery
CapN — The thing is, I cant be sure if its Cheney, or Rove running the show!! LOL I just know it cant be Bush…
“Kev claims to be a moderate, but he sure writes a LOT like a far left Liberal.”
When did I ever say I was a “moderate”?? I am a far left liberal on 90% of the issues. I am a far right conservative on 10% of the issues.
“But it does take someone with less than low morals to take on a client in which the lawyer knows is not in the best interest of the American citizens. Take for example, Bob Dole lobbying for Dubai company wanting to take over the security of our ports.”
You ain’t kidding… The ports thing was one of the few uniting issues the cons and the liberals had this year.. we ALL opposed it!
Why bother replacing Cheney? Cheney declared he isn’t part of the executive branch anymore so the role of VP goes to Rep. Pelosi.
Maybe the Republicans just want to see more of Thompson because of all the man crushes the Republicans have developed. It’s amazing to see members of the Grand Old Pedophiles get their Viagra induced hardons for an old man.
