After Wichita lost the 2011 United States Bowling Congress tournament last month, city officials said they hoped to have a conference call with bowling officials some time after June 5. Well, it’s now June 21, and there still hasn’t been a call.
City spokesman Van Williams said that the city and Bowling Congress have been e-mailing to try to arrange a time for the call, but it has been delayed because of scheduling conflicts with the bowlers. He expects the call to occur in the next week or two. “It doesn’t seem like they are blowing us off,” Williams said.

Sounds likes the Bowling Congress is doing what girls have done for years to the guys they don’t want – they just never call them back.
There are too many cities that would love to host the Bowling Tournament. If Wichita expects anyone to come back to them after being treated badly, then they need to more than just emailing to schedule a time for a call. That sounds like ‘too bad, so sad’ to me.
Typical response from city officials and employees when they BOTCH an economic development deal.
Never speak of it again!
Like I said, if it aint manufacturing, heavy industry, or call centers, they dont think it’s economic development.
You rnt the only one saying that farmgrl…
Except I modify mine a bit,…
If its not manufacturing, heavy industry, call centers or an out of state consultant or company, than they dont think its economic development…
hehehe Tony!
After 21 years in the ecodevo biz, I’ve seen this before….
And unfortunately for all of us, we will see it again. And again. And again…
Ya know, when it comes to economic development, you can have five years of experience or you can have one year of experience five times over.
Guess what most cities have?
Tony – ksfg – I would add “Bread and circuses” (i.e. Arenas and casinos).
“Bread and Circuses,” You lost me there! Explain, please.
Whenever! Why worry about the event that refuses to come here. Wichita won the bid for 2011, then was thrown out of consideration.
The Bowling Congress hasn’t said it publicly, maybe they don’t like Century II. They might been surprised its the same facility they used in 89.
We haven’t improved our Convention Center. Some in the City are discussing a Casino around Century II.
When the County planned for the Aug. 7 vote, the Bowling Congress said, that’s too much future uncertainty around Century II.
It’s alright. Maybe from the Casino process Century II will get an improved interior or completely replaced?
City needs the Aug. vote because the Casino around Century II has been discussed a long time.
It becomes a real plan offered to Topeka to consider or it fades fast, because the Canadians have some kind of financial problem.
Here you go james. It was one of the faint literary quotes brought up in English Lit and World History long ago. Yeah, I probably slept through that part too. :D

It’s like many other things. The Skate Center, The Tennis Court issue,The downtown arena, Cowtown and Exploration Place.
No one knows there’s a problem, until the above agencies report a financial deficiency and ask the City/County for assistance.
Who, has control of the animals, when the barn doors are left open?
Who monitors these issues and why can’t city officials, fairly and honestly report to the taxpayer?
Instead of, keeping us in the dark and baffeling us with, ahh, political rhetoric?
Thanks Republican. I guess when I went to school so many years ago they made us learn such things from literature (from the Wiki link):
“”Bread and circuses” has come to be a derogatory phrase that can criticize either government policies to pacify the citizenry, or the shallow, decadent desires of that same citizenry. In both cases, it refers to low-cost, low-quality, high-availability food and entertainment that have become the sole concern of the People, to the exclusion of matters that the speaker considers more important: e.g. the Arts, public works projects, human rights, or democracy itself. The phrase is commonly used to refer to short-term government palliatives offered in place of a solution for significant, long-term problems.
American Heritage Dictionary
“Offerings, such as benefits or entertainments, intended to placate discontent or distract attention from a policy or situation.”
Thanks Repub, for your explanation!I think, I get dumber everyday.
Saw a thingy on TV today, that sez the mind starts to go south, after thirty. Jeez, when I last heard about “Biscuits and Circuses,” I was more interested in the size of my jockstrap and the contents enclosed.
Have a Great Day!
“Why worry about the event that refuses to come here.” LIKE THE BIG 12? WE HAD THE TOURNAMENT AND LOST IT! WE SHOULD BE CONCERNED ABOUT THE LOSS OF $100 MILLION!
“The Bowling Congress hasn’t said it publicly, maybe they don’t like Century II.” WRONG! THEY HAD MADE THE DECISION TO HOLD IT THERE!
“Some in the City are discussing a Casino around Century II.” YOU AMONG THEM – WANTING THE MONEY FOR YOUR ARENA.
“When the County planned for the Aug. 7 vote, the Bowling Congress said, that’s too much future uncertainty around Century II.” BULL! THEY PULLED OUT LONG BEFORE THE VOTE WAS SET!
I dont give a rat’s ass how many arenas you do or dont build. That’s the hardware. The people working on events are the software.
To paraphrase the movie “Wichita, I think you have a software problem”.
Until you fix the software and people problems, you will have the same problems booking the new arena as the old venues.
