GOP presidential hopeful Fred Thompson’s past connection with Margie Phelps (in photo) of the protesting Phelps clan isn’t a slight against Thompson. But it does show that it can be a small, strange world.
Phelps represented Marcia Tomson Stingley, who in the 1980s sued and reached a settlement with then-Attorney General Bob Stephan for sexual harassment, the Lawrence Journal-World reported. After Stingley claimed that Stephan violated the nondisclosure terms of the settlement, she sued Stephan for breach of contract.
Because Phelps was needed to be a witness in that case, Stingley needed a new attorney. Phelps chose Thompson, who accepted and won the case.
Thompson had no knowledge of Phelps’ beliefs, his spokesman said. Phelps said the case occurred before her family began its “public ministry.”
For her part, Phelps was impressed with Thompson’s trial attorney skills. Nonetheless, she won’t vote for him if he becomes the GOP nominee, she told the Journal-World. “I don’t see a single person on the landscape that I would remotely consider voting for,” she said.
That’s good to hear.

It doesn’t matter what Thompson knew or didn’t know about Phelps. The fact is that he had an association with him. That would be good nuff for Karl Rove to make a TV ad showing Phelps protesting a soldier’s funeral and then putting Thompson next to him and saying “some of Fred Thompson’s associates and friends include Fred Phelps who won’t even let America’s war dead be buried in peace. Do we really want friends like this in our White House?” If it is good nuff for Karl Rove, it is good nuff for the Democrats! Go with it!
Consider the play pictures of Al and Tipper Gore with Phelps taken in the 80’s got. Any supposed connection with Phelps could be a death-blow to a campaign.
In American politics, you don’t need hard facts to torpedo a candidate.
I see a swift boat on Thompsons horizon, it’s skippered by a Phelps!
Nonsense. An attorney representing his client is guilty by association?
Let us try a little harder not to look foolishly complicit with conspiracy theories.
Phillip
The Eagle again shows its bias.
Former AG Stephan is a likeable guy. However, his switch from working on the Kline campaign to dropping out of the Kline campaign was easy for many of us to understand.
Kline brought up the sexual harrassment allegations agianst Morrison. Many of us think Kline should not have done so, without more evidence and perhaps more victims and a showing that it definately affected his job. It is unfortunate for true victims, but the public has an immediate distrust for those who make such charges.I did not believe Anita Hill against Clarence Thomas. The liberals on this Blog did not believe Broderick, Jones, and dozens of other women against Clinton. And so it goes. However, during the entire Kline/Morrison campaign, the Eagle presented Stephan as some kind of “wise old man” of the party, an elder statesman who’s advice the party, and Kline, should take to heart. The Eagle presented Stephan’s change heart, concerning Kline, as a mortal blow to the Kline campaign.Just once, do you not think it would have been newsworthy to reprint the fact that Stephan was NOT able to run for Governor due to HIS sexual harassment problem?Just once, don’t you think voters deserved to hear the obvious:
Anything Stephan said about Morrison and the sexual harassment issue would have backfired, and the press would bring up Stephan’s past.
This is WHY Kline should not have brought up Morrison’s problem.
It put Stephan, Kline’s strongest supporter, in a VERY bad spot.
The Eagle NEVER brought it up.
I can imagine that Stephan was begging the press NOT to bring it all up again, and that leaving the Kline campaign was the price for silence on this issue.
Say it ain’t so, Eagle, say it ain’t so!
Does no one believe in free speech anymore?
My my Paul; aren’t we conspiritorial this morning? Is that why Bon-Bon lost too?
Phelps are all Democrats. Fred Phelps endorsed Al Gore and was his delegate for the Democrat Convention in the past.
If anything! The Phelps will be endorsing the Democrat Nominee.
Given the fact that Phelps has labeled the Democratic Party NAZIS I doubt that he will endorse any of them.
Hey, thanks for dredging up the Phelps family into the news again. We all really appreciate it.
sexy freddie just leaves everyone around him with a positive right…
sexie freddie the great white(gop) hope
Phelps calls for his God to smite down his enemies. Beyond that I don’t know that he has even called for violence against his enemies.
GOP spokesperson Coulter calls for poisoning judges and laments the fact that her favorite terrorist didn’t commit his mass murder against the NYTimes.
As horrible as Phelps is; GOP spokesperson Coulter just might be even worse.
Hmm… Ann Coulter as GOP spokesperson. Well Ben, as long as Michael Moore, Sean Penn and Rose O’Donnell are “Democrat spokespersons”, I suppose that’s fair.
Personally, I think that we should all quit trying to tar everyone in a group with the views of the most extreme.
That’s right outlander, doesn’t Rosie the self appointed “metallurgist-fire-can’t-melt-steel” 911 conspirator speak for all Democrats?

I did that just for Ben.
you all are just scared of a woman that speaks the truth and isn’t in the kitchen behind a man
NObody is scared of Rosie. She’s a nutcase.
One difference Republican: I don’t see people referencing Rosie as having relevance. I don’t see her on talk radio as an authority. I DO see that with terrorist-lover Coulter.
tranny annie is a joke
Yeah before Phelps started his psychotic rants. Joe you always leave out how Phelps also protested his dad’s funeral. Gore hates him now- like everyone else.
I don’t know the entire history but I ahve been told that once, long ago, Phelps was a fairly normal person. In fact, he had been involved in civil rights litigation long ago. However, he has subsequently gone ‘way out.’ So, perhaps some associations he had long ago have since been abandoned.
Phelps will be endorsing Satan, with whom he as a long-standing friendly relationship.
Phelps was NEVER normal.

anothe difference between Rosie and Coulter (or several other Conservative talk show hosts) is that she does not tout herself as being the Voice of America.
Yes Rosie is way liberal. Yes she says crazy things. But she does not claim that her views represent everyone.
Conservatives do.
thanks snarky. wow!
Brian - and I don’t know that Rosie is confidant to any Democratic leaders.
The vast majority of leftists believe that everyone agrees with them or that everyone should be MADE to agree with them. The vestige of Stalinism exists with the left in America, and Britain, Canada and Europe as well.
sarg, ummm I think you got ‘leftists’ confused with ‘righties’
The left is the party of ‘to each their own’
Sorry, brian, it wasn’t the right that tried to force integration and egalitarianism. It wasn’t the right that keeps trying to legislate hard totalitarian hate crimes and hate speech laws. It wasn’t the right that initiated the soft totalitarianism of political correctness and speech codes.
Sorry, dude, you are barking up the wrong tree.
Very true brian. Note, for example, Terry Fox, Falwell, the guy at Spirit 1, and all the rest.
It is the right that does not want gays to marry because they do not think it is right. It is the right that wants prayer in schools because we are a ‘Christian’ nation (even though that would force their views on the many non-Christians in school)
sorry for any confustion sarg.I guess I should amend my first post to say:The left is the party of ‘to each their own as long as it does not hurt anyone else.’
“it wasn’t the right that tried to force integration and egalitarianism. It wasn’t the right that keeps trying to legislate hard totalitarian hate crimes and hate speech laws. It wasn’t the right that initiated the soft totalitarianism of political correctness and speech codes.

You are so right Sarg.It was Liberals that did all of those things.
By definition, any social change would be something for Conservatives to avoid.
Ann Coulter is loved by the right because she makes you lefties so angry.I wish, at times, she would tone down her rhetoric. However, the simple truth is that EVERY time Ann Coulter has said something the Left regards as “outrageous” — Ann was actually doing a parody of someone on the left.
It would figure, Rossell, that YOU would defend someone that advocated the murder of a Supreme Court Justice and called the widows of 9/11 whores.
We wouldn’t expect anything more from you.
I guess next you will blame the fiasco in Vietnam on the disabled soldiers.
Wait, Ann “the Man” Coulter already did that.
Sorry.
By the way, Rossell, WHO was Coulter parodying when she said that disabled American soldiers were responsible for the loss in Vietnam?
WHO was she parodying when she called the 9/11 widows whores?
WHO was she parodying when she suggested that McVeigh should have bombed the NYTimes building?
WHO was she parodying when she advocated poisoning Justice Kennedy’s coffee?
WHO was she parodying when she suggested that all liberals could be killed?
The list goes on. WHO was she parodying with ALL of these despicable statements?
This should be easy for a good Republican like YOU, Rossell. WHO is Coulter parodying with her comments?
Easy?
Or are you just making shit up to rationalize your support for Coulter?
Ann Coulter perfectly represents the views of Paul and other Republicans. That is the difference here - I have yet to see a Democrat or independent here defend Phelps. But here is Paul defending the terrorist-lover.
Isn’t it the Chris Matthews Program on MSNBC that keeps inviting Ann Coulter to appear on his show?
Appears to me, that those paying her paycheck on the ones complaining the loudest.
I have noticed that when liberals are attacking someone anyone who questions one of their claims is “defending” that person, when they are just questioning the source. And there are some real questionable sources around here. Some who wouldn’t know something said tongue in cheek if it slapped them in the face.
But carry on with the shouting down if it makes you think you are accomplishing something.
“Nonsense. An attorney representing his client is guilty by association?
Let us try a little harder not to look foolishly complicit with conspiracy theories.”
It no more non sensical than ads linking Michael Dukakis to rapist Willie Horton, swiftboating John Kerry or challenging the patriotism of a triple amputee Silver Star war veteran (Max Cleland). The GOP plays down and dirty. We need to do likewise.
“Ann Coulter is loved by the right because she makes you lefties so angry.”
As a leftie, I am far more amused than angered by Coulter”
WSEVERY time Coulter spoke, with what I admit was sometimes inflamatory statements, she was pointing out the fact that liberals say awful, hateful, mean and insane things all the time.— and they get away with it.
WSYOU are not telling the truth.
Post the ENTIRE quote, each time, and include the CONTEXT.
Everything must be taken in context.
Ben
You have literally dozens of prominent liberal Democrats who believe that Bush KNEW in advance about 9-11.
That is nuts and hateful.
You never correct them!
“prominent liberal Democrats ”
Such as?
But, to be on par with your terrorist-loving Coulter they would need to say something like “I wish the planes had hit Rush Limbaugh?
http://www.anncoulter.com/
The above is what really happened with Edwards.
Below is Coulter’s archive.Find something she REALLY said, that was not making a valid point about something someone else said, previously:
http://www.anncoulter.com/cgi-local/archives.cgi
And, I would argue, that the irony behind “bombing the NY Times” is rather plain: The New York Times is on the SAME SIDE as the terrorists! That is the point she was making, and that is why the NYT is rather safe.It seemed obvious to me.
Good spin Paul. Actually that is why they didn’t target Bush; he is so buddy-buddy with the House of Saud.
/sarcasm off
You said that EVERY outrageous comment that Coulter made was a PARODY of a leftist comment, Rossell.
Now either back up your claim or admit that you were lying.
Easy enough - or isn’t truth a Republican value?
“However, the simple truth is that EVERY time Ann Coulter has said something the Left regards as “outrageous” — Ann was actually doing a parody of someone on the left.”
Prove it.
Didnt you all know that Ann is really a man in drag?
Ron: I dont know about the drag part… But I wonder if IT has had the surgery yet?? I have felt she was a Tranny for a long time…
I know a number of drag queens and transgendered people. Not a single on is as heinously vicious as Ann Coulter. Comparing her to drag queens is an insult to drag queens everywhere.
I agree Tom. I HATE these “tranny annie” comments.
I have friends who are transgendered.
Being transgendered is NOT a bad thing, as you assholes here on the left AND right constantly say.
Hell, I’d rather be transgendered than a bigot. It’s especially disappointing to see it coming from so called “liberal” posters.
Are mindless bigotry and fifth grade jokes against the transgendered the LAST acceptable prejudice based on ignorance and fear?
I think so. No one here, left or right, thinks TWICE about tagging someone as “bad” or unacceptable for being transgendered.
Jesus WEPT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay, sorry…Ann is a sex change gone bad!
Sorry KFG… but if Coulter IS transgendered, she is one bitter person on the loose… Her commentary is horrible… And, she doesnt look too bad, except she might do better with a couple more pounds on her… she looks almost too thin… ya know??
I have known MAYBE 2 gay people that are nearly as far right as Coulter… It isnt their personal preference that makes them that way…
Ask Bill Maher. He used to date her.
“prominent liberal Democrats ”
Such as?
But, to be on par with your terrorist-loving Coulter they would need to say something like “I wish the planes had hit Rush Limbaugh?
Still waiting Paul.
Something both the Left and Right should agree on is the outrageous behavior of Fred Phelps and his Phamily.
Disrupting a funeral by anyone at any time for any reason is beyond the bounds of decency. New laws have had to be passed because no one has every sunk so low as the Phelpes.
Phelps openly advocates the execution of millions of gay Americans, (I deplore it) and holds hostage the grief of military families trying to bury and mourn their dead.
This is NOT an issue of free speech, the Phelpes have many venues in which they are heard every day. This is simpley common decency.
It should be noted that in a new press release, Westboro does claim that they knew Thompson’s stance on gays. They even call it “wonderful” and say they saw “eye to eye” with the candidate:
