Illegal immigrants less likely to be in prison than citizens

CNN host Lou Dobbs and other immigration critics complain about the high number of illegal immigrants in U.S. prisons. But according to U.S. Department of Justice statistics, 6.4 percent of the inmates in federal and state prisons were noncitizens in 2005, the New York Times reported. Many of the crimes were immigration violations, not violant crimes, and not all of the noncitizens in prison were in the country illegally. Given that noncitizens made up 6.9 percent of the total United States population in 2003, according to the Census Bureau, noncitizens actually have a slightly lower crime rate than the native-born population.

Well sure when they’re arrested, they usually are released, sometimes on the spot.

All of Tyler’s posts but one, the Yahoo reference, are to far-right or virulently anti-immigrant websites. The Yahoo article does more to support the NYT article than to refute it.

Well, when you can run to Mexico and be hidden by your family and friends down there, it’s kind of hard for you to end up in prison.

Sorry Tom that won’t wash anymore. The numbers by the NY Times was presented by members funded by LA RAZA, a virlulent racist anti Ametican Anti White group of racists!

The cities are passing laws against illegal aliens BECAUSE of their crime rates. There are more drunk driver violations and wrecks caused by illegal aliens that the same percentage of people whom are legally able to drive.

In short Tom, you are a clueless moron!

As long as we have employers greedy for cheaper and cheaper labor, the illegal immigrants are here to stay – whether we tax-paying American citizens like it or not. We all need to revolt and take this country back from the illegals AND the politicians who support the illegals.

    Tyler,

Kiss my ass. All I did was criticize your sources. At no point did I call you and “American Citizens” racists.

Your response is typical of radical conservatives. If someone dares disagree with you, call them “morons” and accuse people of saying things they’ve never said.

    Piss off.

And do you have a secret method of telling the difference between a legal immigrant and an illegal immigrant?

And, you may be surprised to know that murdering an illegal immigrant carries the same penalty as a murder of a white citizen.

Clark is right, we do not shoot them. We do not stereotype a “hispanic” as “illegal” .

Illegal aliens are from several races. The largest illegal alien group is from Mexico.

Illegal aliens need to be found and if committing crimes they need to be deported.

Illegal immigrants live in the shadows, hiding away from the authorities. So how do the number of illegal immigrants in prison is compared to the number of crimes reported that are committed by illegal immigrants? How much manpower do we have dedicated to the investigations of crimes committed by illegal immigrants? How about statistics on how well law enforcement is performed on illegal immigration committing crime? If any indication on how well our judiciary system works, it is comparable to how secured our borders are and that is, it is in total shambles.

    Andie,

Use you spell checker, or employ a proof reader. It’s violent, not “violant”.

As for the conclusions drawn from the statistics, they don’t reflect much critical thinking. The NYT article argues numbers based on non-citizens, not illegals. Illegal immigrants, by definition, are criminals, whether they are in prison or not. The presence or lack of violence in their crime is immaterial. Illegal is illegal, and any argument beyond that point is window dressing.

The problem is that the government does not deport them after they do their time. The INS is supposed to pick up illegal immigrants upon release from jail or prison and they never do. The Sheriff here in Cobb says that they always call them and they never come when illegals are to be released from jail. So they get let out to commit more crimes. There is one that has been arrested for DUI 3 times and driving on a suspended license 2 times- and he is still out there on the road somewhere because INS won’t deport him. And this is why so many Americans distrust the government on this issue.

“Well, when you can run to Mexico and be hidden by your family and friends down there, it’s kind of hard for you to end up in prison.”

You have a point. Getting a fugitive back from Mexico is almost impossible. And if a bail bondsman goes over there, the Mexican government will charge him and the USA will send him back to Mexico to be in a Mexican jail. That is what happened to Dog the Bounty Hunter. I don’t think that Americas Most Wanted is racist yet about 50% of the people they are looking for are Mexicans who are probably hiding in Mexico.

“Illegal aliens need to be found and if committing crimes they need to be deported.”

And that is the case in a good number of criminal cases involving illegal aliens, how much does that effect the numbers when it comes to illegals being in prison I do not know. Certainly in non-violent cases that is the remedy of most likely outcome.

I do know that looks can be deceiving, while working as a detention officer. I thought that Blacks made up a larger portion of the Jail population. It was not until I actually saw the breakdown of the jail population that I found that the jail reflected the breakdown of the general population on the outside. But it is human nature, we tend to notice those that are different from ourselves more. In the history of this town (Augusta) we tend to average at least one kid a year that is hit by a driver. But few remember those accidents, but most remember the incident from three years ago when a illegal alien without a drivers license hitting a boy on his bike. It was actually the boy’s fault as he rode out in front of the truck, but that information is seldom mentioned in the story when it is retold.

That’s because we send them back where they came instead of placing them in our prisons. Kind of a stupid article in my opinion.

On September 27, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) announced that the DREAM Act would not be considered as an amendment to H.R. 1585, the Defense Department authorization bill for fiscal year 2008.

The Washington Times reports, however, that Reid will push for passage of the DREAM Act, which would grant amnesty to millions of illegal aliens, by different means (possibly in its stand-alone form [S. 774, sponsored by Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin {D-Ill.}]) before the Senate adjourns for the year (i.e., on or about November 16).

Reid’s concession on the DoD authorization bill may doom other immigration-related amendments to the defense bill as well.

Please fax your senators: We have stopped the DREAM Act for now, but there is already a push to pass it as a stand-alone bill.
