The U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth might be the U.S. prison of choice if terrorism detainees are ever moved from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the Lawrence Journal-World reported. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, introduced a bill to close the Guantanamo prison and send the detainees to Fort Leavenworth, which is the only military prison with the maximum security designation.
Meanwhile, two attorneys who have helped represent the detainees argued on Tuesday’s Opinion pages that "we can’t effectively close Guantanamo unless we distinguish between those who have no business being there and those who actually are dangerous." They argued that it is in our nation’s best interests to allow the detainees to have fair hearings so that we can "separate the wheat from the chaff."

The question posed by Phillip Brownlee is a possibility, since Leavenworth is a Federal Prison.
However, as it stands now, detainees cannot petition for habeas unless they first meet with the panel designated by the Military Commission. There is no time limit for the Guantanamo detainees meeting the panel.
Ooooooh! Accused terrorists in kansas? Jobs! Money! Economy!
Hell, kansans would walk over their grandmothers if someone said “jobs”!
Oh wait, that ones true…..
hehehehe…she said “jobs.”
Actually, during WWII, we had at least three prisoner of war camps here in Kansas; at Concordia, Ft. Riley and Leavenworth.
POW or internment?
Maybe Guantanomo is not so bad after all. :)

6 Detainees Repatriated By Military
“Six detainees were transferred this week out of the U.S. military detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, including one detainee who was returned to Tunisian authorities over the objections of his attorneys amid fears that he will be tortured by a government known for human rights violations.”
Republican,Maybe after we wise up and allow visits to Cuba you would want to vacation there.

A good time for all!
Dont know about the Gitmo guys, but my Mom and I have a farm down by Ark City we would donate use of if they would fill it with Illegal aliens and use if for a point of demarcation for deportees.
Find’em, Fence’em, Toss’em.
There seems to be a prison population here in Wichita that could also look to other housing methods. The Sheriff in Maracaipo County Arizona has over 2000 in a fenced in field in Tents. Feeds them twice per day for 15 cents each. Baloney and day old donated bread.
Our folks were concerned at the taste of the food here. Perhaps they should try other states and their approach. The sheriff in AZ said he doesnt want his place to be nice…its not meant to be nice., he doesnt want them to want to come back.
Im guessing after a few months in a tent in the Arizona desert…this would be a training session on that issue.

Maybe they can hang out at the new Wichita casino and learn to play Blackjack!

I have actually been to Cuba and had a nice time there. The only thing is that you cannot us a Visa or MasterCard there which is kind of rough if you don’t like to carry lots of Canadian dollars but otherwise it was pretty nice.
Hey, great idea. Build a big fence around Topeka. Bring in the detainees. Make them listen to a series of lectures. Brownback will explain evolution; Fred will talk about gays; Tiarht will explain gun-owner rights; Pat Roberts will explain why he would never release the Phase II report on Iraq; Dorothy and Toto will provide entertainment; then the detainees will have to attend all sessions of the Kansas Legislature. They’ll all crack and confess to anything Bush/Cheney wants.
Kev,If you don’t mind sharing, how did you get to Cuba? I would actually would love to visit. I too have heard it is very nice.
Brian,”POW or internment?”As I understand it, they were all POW camps, almost entirely for German prisoners.

You have to go via Canada. You can get a flight to Cuba from Pearson Airport in Toronto and, since Americans can come and go as they wish to Canada, going to and from Cuba is no problem with an American passport. Now there are a few things you need to know- first and MOST important is to tell Cuban customs that you ARE American and not Canadian when you arrive. This is because some of them do not pay close attention to passports while they are stamping them and you do NOT want them to stamp your US Passport. they won’t if they know you are American. Secondly, you cannot and do not want to try to use your American issued credit cards there. In tourist towns like Cardenas and Havana, US dollars are always welcome. In other places, you might have to convert. If you don’t feel comfortable carrying a wad of US cash, you can buy a Canadian issued debit card which will work fine. You don’t really have to worry too much about crime in Cuba however. It is rare that tourist are vistimized there. And, like I said it is a very fun and beautiful place and you will be treated well there.
