New veterans between the ages of 20 and 24 have an unemployment rate of 10.4 percent in 2006, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Many of the veterans have little or no professional work experience outside of the military.
Though there are a wide array of programs and job fairs geared toward finding these men and women employment, the jobs they provide are mostly low-paying, often forcing the vets to take pay cuts.
In an article on Time.com, veteran David Hughes said, “The stress factor here is real different. There, I was worried about the dying, but that was it. They give you a plan and you do it. Here at home I have so many more things to worry about.”

Every single person in the military is eligable for the MGIB.
That is the Montgomery GI Bill.
It provides around 25,000 dollars in money for school.
I can’t even begin to list for you all the programs the military has for the men and women getting out of the military.

While the military paying for an education is awesome, it doesn’t, and shouldn’t, pay every day expenses. Many GI’s, after getting out, are married and have families to support while they’re getting that education. Is the program that holds a job for a vet still on, or is that strictly an employer decision?
I know Sears will hold the job, and even pay the GI their usual salary, while in the military. Or at least they used to.
JM,I saw an article a few days ago about Sears. They do indeed still pay soldiers on active duty. That really changes my opinion of Sears for the positive.
The article doesn’t seem to say how long the vets had been out of the service — if an able bodied vet is still out of work 1-2 years after leaving service he is probably doing some thing wrong — or not paying attention to something —- it disn’t say how many of those might be in school.
It does take time to transiton from the military world — civilians have a some what different version of team work, mission and doing things that takes some getting used to — most vets eventually figure it out — as Nathan pointed there is an education program to lean on (in and out of the service) as well as transition services — if a vet isn’t on top of it, he either hasn’t been paying attention or has been in some way injured by his service …..
What can be disheartening is being told in an interview that you’re service career is irrelevent — doesn’t happen often but it does happen

ANY employer who believes that is incredibly stupid. Most people come out of the service with a solid understanding of discipline and at least some management skills. Personally, I learned management in the Marine Corps. Those skills have stood me in good stead for 35 years.
I do think the unemployment lies. Because I’m darn sure I wasn’t counted in any numbers when I was unemployed.

it would appear that the posters here have been just as swept up in bestowing hero status or the granting of sainthood to anybody who wears a uniform as the media.
What a load of crap. Anybody who has spent ten minutes in the military knows that about 25% of the ranks are knuckleheads who can barely find their ass with both hands. Another 25% are pretty smart and possess reasonable common sense. The other 50% are, like the rest of the world…average – with all of the strengths. weaknesses and foibles of being human.
(My son…who was in the Army for 10 years- including 13 months in Iraq – and just recently got out to become a police officer because that job has more reasonable rules of engagement- claims the moron rate is around 50% so I will bow to his experience. My experience comes from the late 60’s where the draft tended to raise the level of intelligence and competence.)
My point here is the reason some of these “heroic” vets can’t get jobs is because they are idots…and being a veteran has little to do with that fact.
And to the poster above who claims they learned their management skills in the military…you my friend are one of that lower 25%. Wow, rvn, I don’t recall anybody here proclaiming all vets heroes. And the leadership skills learned in the military, while needing to be paralleled for civilian work, are still excellent skill sets. People who classify people in the military the way you did, don’t know much about the military.
Sure, there are lot of “kids” that go into the military, but there are a lot of degreed individuals that go in as well. I remember reading a base newspaper about Wright-Patterson regarding education level. They have big research facilities as well as being a Command base – They had more PhD’s, people with Masters than five Universities combined.
So, let’s be a little more careful about how you assign values towards the military. I know this is anecdotal evidence but this is something I see regularly.
Many of the people I know who got off active duty siad they were going to claim unemployment.
Why do you ask?
Because they know how to work the system. Not because they can’t find a job.
Many of them knew exactly what they would be doing or where they would be working but wanted to sit around and goof off on unemployment for awhile.
I am not sure exactly how they did this study of “New Vets” but I wonder how many of those “newly unemployed” ended up somewhere in a steady job by the next year?
Don’t get me wrong, I am all for helping out the Veterans and getting what I can too in aid.
But don’t be disilliusioned in thinking veterans are not getting help.
Like I said, I couldn’t even begin to list all the perks from VA loans, to the MGIB, to Health Care plans, to all the job placements, the extra points for federal jobs…etc…etc…

Gets free health insurance now, Gets a SSI payment every month cause “disabled” even thou he plays B-ball with his metal leg. Gets all sorts of tax credits so he gets more money back on his taxes than he pays. Invested his back pay in the stock market. his Job now is pretty much a career student paid for by GI Bill, assorted grants because he is “handicapped” “unemployed” even though he has a nice chunk of cash. Joe! I don’t really know all that much about the “organizers” of the pro-revote group; I have only met JWink once and doubt that Barfield is a Republican Assembly person. Some of us who oppose the Communist proposal do so out of principle after having examined the accounting of the project.
I think the fact that there really was no anti-Communist-arena group before the election helped it pass. And, it is very difficult to get people to actually look at how much the numbers have changed – especially when some pro-communist-arena people say the numbers are irrelevant.

As a vet of the Army and the war in Iraq, I can say from experience that the job market is tough out there for vets. I lived on my disability pay until that dried up about six months after I got out. I finally filed for unemployment, (it took me months to file because I object to living on someone else’s dime) It still took me four months to find a job, and the one I have is a low paying retail job, and that is not for a lack of trying, people are not hiring vets. I am going to school, but the money the VA provides for that is not enough to live on.
So I joined the army, and I fought in Iraq. I don’t want a cookie, I would just like to be able to find a job that pays me enough to live on, at a rate equal to or better than my civilian peers.
Gnome – do you find that your difficulties finding a good job is due to ” because Employers who are Democrats refuse to hire them.” as Joe! claims?
Not sure you are aware if Gnome, but Veterans get additional points under Civil Service and disable veterans greater than 30 percent get more consideration.
The reason why I’m mentioning this is both Kansas and the Federal Government must give you preference in hiring over other candidates if you meet the qualifications of the job.
I believe that Wichita and Sedgwick County give the same preference, but of that I’m unsure.
You may try for a job with one of the government agencies and find out.
Any Vet Counseling service will help you find a job, there are a few local. Contact the toll free number for Veterans to find out specifically, should be in the phone book or go to the VA center on Edgemoor.
The problem I had, even though employers won’t admit to it, that I was “too disabled” to get hired.
It’s hard to prove and I didn’t feel like getting a job with hard feelings involved.
But you’re right, unless you have a specific trade or education, people don’t hire Vets because they have served.
Most employers feel that they owe you nothing, they just want ‘bang for their buck.’
Hard reality, but that’s the truth in that the U.S. turns their backs on Veterans.
What you can do since you are going to school, is visit the VA counselor on Edgemoor and tell him you really want a job in addition to going to school. They might even be able to hook you up with a job at the VA Center.
Check it out, won’t hurt trying.
I could see how employers might be a little gun-shy of vets. Look at what’s happened to them…many vets remain in the reserves/national guard. They’ve been called up, well, let’s say “a lot” in the past decade. An employer has to keep a spot open, I think, and this must be a major planning headache. Further, I believe officers even have to take the step of resigning their commission even when their enlistment is up, or they risk being recalled to duty. From what I understand many officers are unaware of this and have been called back into service against their desires.
The stigma with having a disability on an application applies to both those who are vets and those who have never been vets.
People don’t want to hire people with disabilities because they fear they will have to accommodate them, which is partially true.
They won’t be able to take advantage of an employee to do heavy moving or some other activity not in their job description. That’s just a fact of life and how it is with employers.
It used to be with my father’s age, that one could get by on a minimum wage job, but not any more. My father had two jobs, one full time and one part time after he got out after WWII. It wasn’t easy back then, but people were a bit more “patriotic” back then as well.
I would say now, one would have to search very very hard, to find a patriotic employer these days. Most could care less if you are a veteran or not and won’t give you any preference.
They are overly concerned about their bottom line.
I find this hard to believe and it does not match my experience. I find that employers are more likely to hire vets- in fact many give preference to them and if I was hiring I would too because unlike many who skipped the military and went to college (which admittingly my own kids are doing), military vets know how to get up early, be to work on time and follow instructions. So I really don’t know why unemployment among them is high. Maybe people just don’t love the military anymore like they used to or maybe a few rouge Marines killing civilians have given all the services a black eye.

The best employers do give a preference including government, schools and utility companies.
The State of Kansas doesn’t Kev. I applied for a job I was exceptionally well qualified.
Instead, they hired the beautiful blond woman fresh out of college.
The same happened to me with the City of Wichita. They hired someone with less experience AND education.
And so on and so forth.
Like I said, they see disability and run for the hills.
My company, AT&T does as well.

That brings up an interesting question in that I wonder what Wal*Mart’s policy is. They are the ones always sprouting off about “supporting the troops” and being as American as apple pie. I wonder of they put the money where the mouth is.

Joe! Anything to back up your claim that it is Democratic employes who won’t hire veterans? Or is that just another ‘Joeism’ you made up.
It sure does not match with what I was told personally by many VietNam vets back in the 70s.
We did not have people like that in the USAF. Almost all of our people were very intelligent and had great technical and leadership skills. The few that didn’t ended up being “tank rats” out at McConnell!
