Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, who as a Democratic presidential candidate recently proposed an educational policy that urged “every financial barrier” be removed for American kids who want to go to college, has been going to college himself — as a high paid speaker, his financial records show.
The candidate charged a whopping $55,000 to speak at to a crowd of 1,787 the taxpayer-funded University of California at Davis on Jan. 9, 2006 last year, Joe Martin, the public relations officer for the campus’ Mondavi Center confirmed Monday.
That amount — which comes to about $31 a person in the audience — included Edwards’ travel and airfare, and was the highest speaking fee in the nine appearances he made before colleges and universities last year, according to his financial records.”

While details remain subject to change, the measure is designed to close the books by Friday on a bruising veto fight between Bush and the Democratic-controlled Congress over the war. It would provide funds for military operations in Iraq through Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year.”
The Democrats stand down for the sake of our troops in Iraq and Republican (cue chicken noises) makes it sound like a defeat.
Somebody needed to quit playing politics…looks like Democrats stepped up to the plate. That would have never occurred to BushCo and republicans, who would rather play politics with our soldier’s lives.
While a deadline for troop withdrawal might send a message of hope to the insurgents, it would send a much more essential message to the Iraqi Government that they have a set time by which they better have their shit together politically and militarily and be ready to negotiate with those factions they can, and defeat those who won’t. They also have a determined deadline for raising their relevance with their electorate, or fall! If we also make a sincere effort to keep members of the government from stashing cash abroad; their priorities should be directed toward saving Iraq, not looting it!The Iraqi government and people must stand high and independent, and soon.
The era of cheap energy is probably over. Yes, gasoline prices will fall after summer but they will not fall as much as they did last year and every summer they will rise more than they did the prior year. Electric rates are also bound to go up after the country switches to more nuclear plants but most Americans will accept this as a trade off for cleaner air. In the future we will have to be more efficient in the use of resources. Americans have long been inefficient- gobbling up more than 24% of thr world’s energy while being a mere 5% of the world’s people. Now China and India want their fair share too. That is why we will be paying more.

This bill is a pig. How is the current immigration bill getting anywhere? The American worker is being sold out. Supporters of this POS point to new enforcement, but we tried that back in 1986 and we know where that went. 4 million illegals got amnesty and enforcement fell by the wayside. If this bill passes in anything close to it’s current form, we’re screwed (as usual).
No more empty promises. Border security has to come first. Forget about fences and the empty promises about increasing headcounts in INS. Mine the southern borders 100 yards deep and put up lots of warning signs. That way when illegals get blown up, they have only themselves to blame.
Mines are efficient and inexpensive compared to more officers and fences.

Per the new immigration law, the way I understand it is that they can only stay 6 years and must return to their homeland for a year after being here for two years. My question is: how will that be enforced? We can’t control the influx as it is now and limit those crossing illegally. On a personal note, I am in a inter-racial marriage and have 3 multi racial children. This movie is just that a movie. I do find it funny that the prince is white. Why not a black prince? That is a shame really. Black women have no role models and it reflects in the community. The stereotype that prince charming must be white washes out that the main character is black. Disney like much of corporate America had a chance to get it right but failed miserably this time.

You are right….one should exist. Sadly, one doesn’t. Black female role models are few and far between. They typically stay obscure and out of the public eye. That is what I find shameful. You tried and came up with 3. Imagine how hard it is for a young black girl to find a respectable role model.

I think your trying to find some local examples of black female role models. Those might serve your daughters better if they can’t find one nationally.
Whatever your daughters want to do, they can find some individuals story to admire.
There is no reason you can’t take your daughters into any corporation or company located here and show them those jobs.

Thanks for answering in the spirit the question was asked. I think you probably are right, it is always nice to see someone who looks like you that has already succeeded, I just never thought of it that way. I used few female role models in the raising my own daughters, (although that was awhile ago and I could have forgotten :) I taught them to compare their results to their potential, not to others. However, they did not have past and present prejudices to overcome. Anyway, thanks for the answer and good luck with your daughters

Mrage you are correct to a point. I could take my daughters to any university and find role models for my daughters. My point is that they are few and far between in the public eye. Michelle Obama is a great role model. However, she is just now starting to become nationally known. Its not that I choose to eliminate anybody from the fold, I just thought this was a good time for the topic to be discussed. My daughters have great role models in their parents. Like I said earlier, it should be easy to list 5-10 names in any race for a young person to look up to. Minorities typically find the athlete or entertainer to try to emulate(sp). This is wrong because it sets the wrong level of expectation of achievement. Athletes and entertainers have gifts from god that very few people have. This is why children should not idolize them. Children should have role models that have common gifts and work hard to maximize their potential.
I appreciate everyone’s thoughts and hope that this gives everyone something to think about. It is topics such as this that will help our country grow and prosper. We as black people should ask this question openly and respect the answers we get. We are too closed minded as a community to outside influence and criticism.

Maya Angelou, my friend Iva who is a RN with the Wichita School District and has adopted and raised three outstanding kids, the youngest are freshmen in college this year (twins). My friend Junetta who is the Vice President of the corp I used to work for. She has a degree with two majors, dental hygiene and business management, frequently speaks at WSU, has 5 boys who are just what any mother would wish her children to be.
I am white but have a bi-racial niece who is 13, a bi-racial nephew 15 (different families), a black nephew who is the father of my 21 month old twin great neices. He graduated from KState last year and is an engineer with the Corp of Engineers at Ft. Riley. He is also an officer in the Army reserve.
My point is that people don’t have to be famous to be someone you would want your kids to emulate. The members of my family are never allowed to feel sorry for themselves. We acknowledge they will have it rougher than most but constantly remind that they will be limited only by the limits they place on themselves.
Hope I didn’t offend because you might not think these are note worthy black women but they are the women I admire.
