More than ceremony to sine die

The Greensburg tornado will give a special purpose to the Kansas Legislature’s formal adjournment, the mostly ceremonial occasion known as sine die. House and Senate leaders have called lawmakers back to Topeka Tuesday morning to pass legislation giving the State Finance Council authority to spend as needed on cleanup in Greensburg and Kiowa County between now and January, when the 2008 Legislature convenes. This is money that nobody wanted to have to spend, but essential to help these Kansans. One of the many to lose homes, of course, was House Minority Leader Dennis McKinney, D-Greensburg.

Let’s hope and pray that continued assistance to the residents of Greensburg does not fall to sine die either from Legislative meet-ups or from the Executive branch of the State of Kansas.

It is really sad that a tornado tore up a town that elected a Democrat in a state that is mostly Republican. I am surprised that the Republicans did not try to withhold aid from the town as “punishment” for voting Democrat. But then again the Govornor probably would not put up with it.

I just hope the Kansas Legislature does not screw this up like they have done with so many things in the past. If the conservative christian crazies don’t insist that no money can be spent to repair anything that looks like a school or an abortion clinic, well….gee, this could be a good thing.

Well Kev, it’s clear you are not from Kansas. Dennis McKinney runs as a Democrat, but he is republican through and through.

    Just like governor leadership.

Give me a break. THis is horseshit plain and simple. But while the subject is up, maybe we have to be certain the crazy atheist liberals don;t screw it up by them making sure no churches get rebuilt (note the sarcasm)

Lj, sorry but I agree with think.

The RR has done lots of this stuff. They certainly done what they could to end funding for abortions in cases of rape and life of the mother. And who do we fight most on school funding issues? Or did you forget they want vouchers to be instituted so they can sap taxpayer monies into their theocracy schools.

I want to know why the state doesn’t have an emergency fund set up for stuff like this?

Political Mom,When has the RR ever wanted to stop the building or anything after a disaster? Show me one incident. One is aberration probably, so show me two. Show me a trend. I don;t think you can. None of the issues you cite has anything to do with a disaster. That was my point about it being horseshit.

PoliticalMom-You are right in that there are extremists on every side, the RR is no exception. Abortions should be funded to save the life of a Mom, there isn;t any argument. In the case of rape, I understand their argument but disagree with them. I think that it should be funded, but with stipulations 1) it is reported within a short time of happening 2) a d&c is done eithe immediately, or within just a few short weeks. After that, i have concerns. It is not the RR that I usually have to contend with about school funding, it is those whose no longer or never did have kids or grandkids on the system. Also those that are “no taxes, no matter what” “thinkers-saracasm applied”The voucher system I waver back and forth on, so I will not speak of.

No taxpayer funding for any abortion. Ever. No exceptions.

Looks like there is at least one on the RR side who disagrees with you.

Yeah, so it seems. Too bad. Extremist views knows no boundaries. I used to think I was part of the religious right, but seems it was coopted some time ago. It is no longer what I wished to be identified with. I guess I am a moderate, both as a Republican, and a Christian. wow. I am sadded by that thought.

Why would he run as a Democrat?? There are Democrats in the south that do that but in Kansas having an “R” by your name is a plus.

Never say never. I agree for the most part but there are times- such as saving the life of a woman or a 12 year old that has been raped by her dad- that I would say it should be funded.

Execute rapists, not their babies who are as much victims of rape as their mothers.. . .The KS Senate failed 19-10 to override Gov. Bilious Sebelius’ veto of a proposal requiring abortionist quacks to report on reasons for killing viable babies – 8 votes shy of 2/3 majority. Of the 30 Republicans, 16 voted YES, 5 RINOs voted NO, 6 were absent, and 3 didn’t vote – a mighty poor showing for a party called pro-life.The following baby-hating RINOs voted NO: Pete Brungardt, Salina; Roger Reitz, Manhattan; Vicki Schmidt, Topeka; Jean Schodorf, Wichita; John Vratil, Leawood. The following negligent Republicans were absent: Barbara Allen, Overland Park (never a loss when this RINO’s absent, anyway); Jim Barnett, Emporia; Terry Bruce, Hutchinson; Les Donovan, Wichita; Carolyn McGinn, Sedgwick; Peggy Palmer, Augusta. The following cowardly RINOs did not vote: Jay Scott Emler, Lindsborg; Ruth Teichman, Stafford; David Wysong, Mission Hills. The following Democrats had enough human decency to vote YES to override: Jim Barone, Frontenac; Mark Gilstrap, Kansas City; David Haley, Kansas City.

“Why would he run as a Democrat??”

That’s a damn good question. Why would he run as a democrat and then vote like a republican?

    You should ask him.

Oh, and ask governor leadership the same thing.

Maybe they just cant stand the competition in the repuke party primaries, so they run as dems then vote like repubs?

Hell, if McKinney switched parties, he’d get some of terry, joe and fred’s cash too.

Of course, maybe he does now…
