Several local groups are sponsoring an Arkansas River trash clean up Saturday, May 5 from 10 a.m. to noon.
If you want to help out, go to Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, where groups will check in and get gloves and bags.
In the lead-up to the River Festival, this is a great way to enhance public awareness about the need for a clean river.

I’ll be there.
I think I’ll drag my sorry ass out of the house, too.
Special Note -Wow! I am really impressed by the Keeper bridge and landscape. I spent an hour this evening with my 3 yr old just hanging out around the Keeper, it was very relaxing, and the bridge was impressive to walk on.I hereby apologize for my negative prejudgment of the bridge scale against the old indian. I was wrong.
Aren’t they afraid of alligators and snakes that hang around the river?
I hope to see a large turnout there tomorrow. There are four main groups spear-heading this – Ark River Coalition from Riverside Hospital to the Keeper; Sierra Club from Keeper to Kellogg; Bank of America from Kellogg to Harry (I think); and South Central Improvement Alliance south of Harry.
I think this is a great way that we can all participate in making Wichita a better place to live.
Reminder: sunscreen, hats, tough old shoes/boots. PLAN TO GET DIRTY!
;^)
get some handcuffs and a cattle trailer.. round up the illegals first
OUR RIVER – OUR RESPONSIBILITY
If you don’t know which group you want to join show up at L-D a bit BEFORE 10. Team leaders will be picking up the gloves etc there and taking to sites along the River. Then take your pick.
Hope to see a lot of bloggers there – parhaps we should identify ourselves as a sponsor!
I was told that there were about 100 total in the effort. Getting an exact count is tricky since many people joined in at the river itself instead of L-D. For example, in our group a lot of people just showed up along Greenway south of Pawnee.
Got a lot of trash. One need that became glaringly apparent to me is the need for trash barrels along the river. We have trash containers in our parks and on the streets downtown; why not along the river banks?
Ben: Glad your volunteers picked up a lot of trash along the Arkansas River this AM. Perhaps I can pick up a section along the sparkling waters of the Ninnescah River in Pratt County this PM before the rain begins again.
Of course, Highway 54 here at Pratt is closed from Main Street going westward towards Greensburg.
The fabled “Woody’s Bar” here in Pratt is giving free meals and drinks to all people from Greensburg who come in! And I believe other Pratt businesses are doing similar random acts of kindness.
That’s the Kansas tradition … Kansas people helping Kansas people in times of need.
Sorry couldn’t help, have trouble walking on uneven surfaces with my semi-useful legs. Hopefully I can pitch in some other way.
JW – good to hear about “Woody’s”. You are correct; that is the kine of ‘random’ that is not only a Kansas tradition but a good one in many places.

Some coverage of the devastation in Greenburg.
I was at the clean-up. East side of Lincoln Street bridge heading north. From a boat access point to the bridge was tons of trash. Left by fishermen and washout.
I was pretty meticulous. I even pulled out the plastic bags that have embedded themselves into the dirt for which looks like many years where it sat. Not to mention the amount of cigarette buts.
Found a duck skull and a boy found a raccoon one. I gave him the duck skull, he was pretty excited about his new found collection. :)
I was by myself but ended up running into the BoA team, which they gave me a few trash bags to help double wrap the ones I had, since they were so heavy and tearing through the bag.
Good times! We need to do it more often than once a year.
We were just south of you Joe. I met the BofA leader up at L-D picking up bags; then headed south. Lots of trash out there.
Were you also struck by the lack of trash receptacles down there?
There was none. And I notice that the Lincoln Street bridge is a hot spot for fishermen. There were some there when I was picking up trash.
They fish off the south side of the bridge or dam I should say. I was on the north side, but I picked up plenty of fishing string, empty bait containers, lures and a whole host of other angler stuff, not including the other trash.
Since that place is a hot spot for fishermen, their should be some trash containers in that area.
Joe – we will be agitating for such containers. If you can push them with whoever you know that should help. Sort of hit city officials from different directions saying the same thing.
Amen Ben!! One thing though, all the trash receptacles in the world won’t help unless someone empties them once in awhile!
Oh.. and if they would put “cans only” receptacles down there, I guarantee they would always be empty!
