Comedian Stephen Colbert pretended to criticize Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ behavior as an even bigger disaster than the tornado, mocking the White House’s contention that she didn’t properly ask for aid. “How is the White House supposed to know a town has been wiped out?” he said. “They’re not meteorologists.”
On the same subject, comedian Bill Maher offered this among his “New Rules” on his HBO show Friday: “You can’t send the National Guard to Iraq and then claim it’s still here. The helicopters, the Humvees, the men — like Dorothy and Toto, they’re not in Kansas anymore. Sorry, Mr. President, but the last documented case of a National Guardsman able to be in two places at one time was you.”
Earlier in the show, Maher wondered whether the “Greenville” tornado would cause Kansans to make the connection between their GOP voting habits and “the fact that, yes, the relief was slow to come because your National Guard was in a rathole in the Persian Gulf.”

Bill Maher is a moron. And didn’t we just debate this?
Long before the Greesburg tornado, Sebelius expressed concern that the National Guard and it’s equiptment were gone to Iraq. Bush needs his war in Iraq more than he needs the people of Kansas.
Okay, please point out how the cleanup in Kansas was delayed. The answer is of course that it was not delayed. Secondly, if we have troops in Iraq I think it is reasonable to use some of our National Guard equipment to help protect their lives.Society has changed, we are a bunch of wimps. Can you imagine people complaining during World War II about National Guard equipment being used in the war? Don’t think so!
It was all about politics for the Gov and nothing else. She should have been more worried about the people of the state she is to represent rather than worry about her own political future.
Gov. Sebelius and Senator Don Betts were all about the politics. Don Betts referred to the Greensburg tornado as being another Katrina. He said people were not getting the help they needed. What Betts does not understand is that the people in Kansas know how to step up to the plate and help each other. They don’t stand around and wait for the Government to come to their aid.
Why does politics have to be part of everything?
OMG roger, if you dont see the difference between WWII and george and dick’s excellent adventure in iraq, there is no point in a conversation.
By invoking WWII, doesnt that qualify as some variation of Godwin’s Law?
Woof.
Hehehehehehe. And it wasnt Senator Don Betts who was grandstanding for the TV cameras outside his own district.
I guess the toddly one also “should have been more worried about the people of the state she (he) is to represent rather than worry about her (his) own political future.”
Hehehehe. And STS, everytime you hammer on Betts, you are releasing the scent of your republican fear that he could beat your toady.
Peeeee-ewwwwww!
Although the smell of wingnut fear is getting common in here, it still doesnt make it anymore pleasant.
Why all the fear and loathing of Senator Betts?
Ya know, if you tended to your own back porch, you wouldnt have to worry about WHICH opponent will surely beat tiahrt like a rented mule.
Heheheheh
And since ALL FIFTY governors agree with sebelius…
…who you gonna believe? All the governors? Or your lying preznit and his merry band of toadies?
Proving once again that being a wingnut means you never have to live in the reality based community!
Worse than Sebelius was the ever-stupid Obama stating that 10,000 lives were lost in the tornado.
What a maroon.
Do us a favor, Barak, just stand there and let us look at you – but don’t open your mouth and ruin it.
roger,
What’s your definition of a wimp? The Islam nation’s people’s median age is 16. In the U.S. its 34. It’s near 40 in most of Western Europe and Japan.
We once had a median age of 16–before WWII. Times–and demographics–have changed. We have a problem in older people being propagandized to support sending our young men and women a half-world away to fight. But, they’re age-cohort outnumbered 10: 1. Actually, more than this, without a draft that mobilizes 90% of our young adults.
This isn’t a U.S.-victory-favoring ratio.
The neo-con doctrine tested the unproven hypothesis that high-tech weaponry and small forces could defeat low-tech weaponry and large forces. But ultimately, this war has confirmed all past wars’ experience: you need boots on the ground to win. We don’t have the boot numbers to prevail. We can never get to the number required to win.
Farmie I think that smell is a left wingnut. Better check that out. Sebelius had a serious case of foot ‘n’ mouth disease and had to retreat and Bill Maher has shown himself to be driven by hate and that is never a pretty picture. He wants to make Bush look bad and doesn’t care if another fact in his whole routine is correct.
Barak, Sebelius, Maher and many others are sweating big time. I know that is the smell I am getting
Hehehehehehe! OMG, EVERYBODY PANIC!!! STOP THE PRESSES!!!
Germie doesnt like Obama, Sebelius or Bill Maher.
What a HUGE surprise!
Here is a joke for you:Bush, Maher and Sebelius are out taking a walk together. The first one said “It is kind of windy.”The second one said “No, it is Thursday.”The third one said “Yeah me too, let’s get a beer.”
I will state it once again that the Tiahrt’s were there because she has friends and family in the area. It is only natural that elected officials when in the area are asked to tour and stand with the Gov. at a press conference.
Long before the Gov. got there Todd and Vickie were helping to clean up. The Gov. came in and did her photo op then left without raising a hand to assist.
“(S)He wants to make Bush look bad and doesn’t care if another fact in his whole routine is correct.”
Substitute “Clinton” for “Bush” and you have KSGrm’s philosophy in a nutshell.
Last I knew, comedy was not held to any journalistic standard of truth. The fact that you seem to think it should be, says more about you than anything else could.
In early May, 2004, Sebelius met privately with Bush after his Speech for the 50th Anniversay of the Brown v. Board of Education celebration. She met privately with Bush to express her concerns about Kansas National Guard equipment not being returned to Kansas. So, her interest in this subject preceded the so called “political” opportunity of Greensburg.
Isn’t time to drag out those bogus stories about Howard Dean directing the Governor’s statements?
As far as I can determine, the Howard Dean story is bogus and the origin of that story is not clear.
I agree there are no journalistic standards for comedy, but why can’t we have journalistic standards for journalists? Facts and logic are sadly lacking in news reports and editorials.
Would a fire chief looking for victims at a fire stop and tell the press that more resources were needed for recovery when all the needed resources arrived on the scene in a timely manner? The chief would focus on the recovery job, and later identify ways to improve, or resources that would have been helpful.
While recovery was still going on at Greensburg, Sebelius turned the event into a political attack about a national issue. Only 40 guardsmen were in the initial response to the tornado. Only 40.
The Kansas press seems unwilling to do any research about what resources were missing or needed or hold Sebelius accountable.
